General Discussion / Re: I need some advice...
September 21, 2012, 11:23:03 PM
Hey Ian and Frank.  Well, today I disconnected every thing else, including the clutch and brake pedals.  The clutch pedal would not come off the shaft because apparently some pinhead had beat on the end of it making it sort of like a mushroom.  I had to work at it with a mill bastard file (which pretty much describes the job too) for about an hour before I could slide the pedals off the shaft.  All that remains to unbolt are the the front and rear motor mounts....and I have to drop the transmission which I can not get to move at all.  I thought it would be easy since the tranny is about the size of a cantaloupe!  But it won't budge.  I'm going to have to do some reading and research to see if I am missing something.  The wife is off with her girl friends for the weekend so I can work on the car without any "honey do's" getting in the way of my "fun"!  Hope to have both the engine and trans out this weekend.  Will keep you posted and will post some pics too.  Thanks again for responding.  Kim Mc

Thanks Ian and Frank.  I've got the radiator out and nearly everything else off or disconnected.  The driveshaft is off and the tranny unbolted but not out yet.  Still have the pedals and master cylinder to remove.  I was hoping I could do what Ian suggested and just lift and twist the engine so the left rear motor mount clears the steering column and box.  I will let you know how the rest of this adventure turns out.  Thanks again guys.  Kim Mc

I am getting ready to pull the engine from my '29U.  Will it come out easily without removing the steering column and box?  I want to keep the steering in for now so I can move the car around.  Thanks for your help.  Kim Mc

Well, your first post about the car was about Jan. 1 (you had not even picked up the car yet).  Now at the end of July, the car is completely finished.  Amazing job.  Wish I could work that fast (and have things turn out well too!).  Great work.  A real inspiration!  Thanks for all the step by step posts as your work progressed.  Kim Mc

reply to Jason A.  I intend to keep the box for sure.  I don't know yet if the other radiator I have leaks or not; still have to test it.  If it is good, I will use it instead and keep the box and radiator together; after all, the two have been together for 83 years!  The set makes a pretty cool item.  It still has the label of the shipping destination in Oakland CA (visible in picture).  Kim Mc

General Discussion / Sharing my good fortune...

Last week a street rodding neighbor called and said he was bringing a radiator over for me to look at.  He bought it sight-unseen from a friend who said it would fit his '32 International pickup street rod.  It wasn't right so he brought it over and asked me if I knew what the radiator fit; he was going to take it to a swap meet to sell.  What I saw was a "honey-comb" core vintage radiator still secured in the original wooden crate.  I told him it looked identical to the radiator in my '29 Plymouth coupe.  We pulled out the box and on the end of the crate was stenciled "radiator for Plymouth; 1929-30, 4 cyl".  Apparently no one bothered to look at the box!  I bought it right there.  I needed it for the restoration of my great-grandfathers coupe.  Sorry, it is not for sale.  But I thought some of you would like to see it.  Kim Mc

There is a luggage rack on Ebay right now.  It looks in good condition but I am uncertain what car it fits.  Check it out; item #370610888759 or search 1929 plymouth.  That's is a very nice trunk.  mc

Hey guys.  I'm getting ready to re-do my discs too but haven't disassembled them yet.  I didn't realize the buckle washers are placed between the discs (as shown in racertb pics); I can't tell from John's pics if the buckle washers are between the discs or beneath the bolt head.  What's the right arrangement?  After reading all this I'm going to take notes when I disassemble mine.  Thanks all.  Kim

General Discussion / front fenders

Can anyone tell me if '28 sedan front fenders are the same as '29 business coupe front fenders?  Thanks.

Rusty and Chet; thanks for the replies.  Good to know that cooling should not be a problem.  By the way, I follow the forum and I appreciate your posts regarding your restoration adventures.  These will be a help to me.  Kim

I'm working on restoration of my '29 biz coupe.  I know cooling the '29 engine can be an issue since it doesn't have a water pump.  Also, summer air temperatures in the central valley of CA where I live could present a challenge to keeping the engine running cool when driving it in during hot weather.  I was wondering if anyone out there has experimented with placing a small 6v in-line water pump alongside the lower radiator hose to force more water through the radiator?  Would this work?  Could it overwhelm the radiator flow capacity and force water out the overflow (thereby making the overheating problem potentially a bigger problem).  It seems to me that such a strategy could work and would not require major modifications.  I would appreciate hearing thoughts and ideas, especially from anyone who may have tried this or other modifications to improve engine cooling.  Thanks.  Kim Mc

General Discussion / Re: 29 U motor???

Glenn; I was looking at the Plymouth Owners Club car judging rules last night and remembered reading this:

"The 30U carried a U series engine but to differentiate between the old U engine & the new, engine numbers ran in a different sequence. The 1929U numbers ended at U110,000, while the 30Us U series engine began at engine number U200,001 and ran to U277,000."  (pg 22)

I am not an expert like others in the club whom you might consult, but I thought this would be a start for your research.

Good luck, Kim Mc ('29 U biz coupe)
