General Discussion / Found original motor for 34
February 19, 2012, 02:48:01 PM
Hi all !
Was lucky to find an original motor that was taken out of a original DR-XX owner was going to restore then found it was easer to rod the car.
The following day removed sump cleaned and replaced fired up on ground , oil preasure was initially 15 psi on free spin on starter , fire up  smoke every where  , idle oil psi about 25 psi small rev to see presure rise to 60  then as motor warmed up after 20 min. With water flow to keep cool oil preasure went as low as 2 to 3 psi at idle and still puffing blue smoke  so have decided to fully rebuild this engine before going in car !
I was hoping like 30u engine started after 36 years still excellent except for minor oil leakes.

Thank you Gary !
As I had found when stripping down wheels I am about 1/2 way though 2nd rear wheel it's all In high fill 2K got new coach bolts after top coat will assemble it still a few weeks away !

Hi Gary !
I have torn down a spare wheel that I have to match the the 1st rear that I did on 30 u and found that front and rear spokes are different length and I would prefere my spokes to ride on the hub rather than the bolts and they also have to be press fit in and will take load better ,I would say that. Bolts would be there to hold them straight against hub not load bearing down, but then I could be wrong.

Hi Glen !
When I purchased my 30u it had not run for more than 36 years  it too had gunk in the sump and on advice from my vintage car club they told me remove sump clean it then replace it then fire up engine !
I'm glad I did take there advice as there was so much gunk it would have chewed out bearings, engine did smoke for first 30 min. Or so then cleared up and now does not smoke at all leaks a little though,
My point is motor could still be good you never know !

I feel like a surgeon saved one more from junkyard in the sky.
Will post some pics of plugs and weld later on .

Good to see its home ! Even better to see that your son is also very keen , I like what you did about being morbid I thought it was great .
We will catch up at some time I'm sure !
I have a suggestion try to let your son to do things on the car that he is capable of ,just think it makes it more special .
Cheers Tony.

I have succesfuly plugged inside leak with nickel arc rods now I have an external very small crack adjacent to my inside repair this I will use drill and tap plugs as Glen was reffering to as this crack runs adjacent to oil pressure gallery then does a 90deg. turn into it. ( Why me) its really testing my patience
here is a picture of leak B4 I started repair !
In picture this is how I found the no oil pressure problem ! and so far I have had 2 goes at the fix, its now back in oven for 2nd time, as after 1st attempt too much welding at once, got to take small steps

Well boys and girls !
Today is 1st day of my 4 weeks holiday and I spent it grinding out crack in my dodge engine heated it up tp 300 deg C.  For an hour, in our pizza oven (of all places) lifted it out onto block of wood welded 1/2inch at time and preened the daylights out of the weld while doing this had a propane blower heater on block to help keep heat in, mind you today's temp was 32 deg.c  I was sweating more than a boxer training in a desert on a summers day, I think it took a total of 45 to 50 min. To weld. And peen non stop.
Engine block is now on a slow cool down over 2 days in oven wood fired ,I did see the cam bearings start to melt out of there shells but will replace them if pressure test Checks out OK  and no more signs of crack in block. Will find out after Monday if it's a success or not, I did give it my best shot.
