General Discussion / Re: Quiet Board
August 01, 2015, 07:23:53 PM
Ted,

Well the trip over in the morning was uneventful.  Just have to spend more time on the road.

About 275 cars, mostly 60's muscle and street rods.  The Hurst Olds was very nice.  One man had 2 '57 Fairlane 500s: 2dr (no post) Hardtop and a Convertible Hardtop both in a baby blue and white; and a baby blue '57 T-Bird.  Obviously he is proud '57 Ford owner.  However, there was a beautiful '28 Pontiac 4dr Sedan and an equally gorgeous '29 Dodge 4dr Sedan.  Also 2 very nice Model A Coupes.

Return trips are my nemesis.  Started fine and ran well for the first 7 miles and then began sputtering and losing power at 30 mph.  Popped the hood, checked the air/fuel mixture screw and it was ok.  Nothing readily apparent.  Drove home and it "seemed" better.  Parked in the drive to let cool before parking in garage.  Started right away, but sounds like only 3 cylinders at best, regardless of rpm.  Have to investigate further.  Maybe it doesn't like it hot?!  On the plus side, no gas leak from the Kingston or carb, and no radiator leak.  See what happens with the rad when it cools.

All in all a very good time.    frank

Chet,

You do have many activities to keep you occupied.  I'm sure there is some pleasure in each.

Well, I'm about to find out how well my buggy runs today.  Attending a small local show about 10 miles away.  Taking the gas can and not being as  confident/cocky as last August!  Thought all the crud in the gas tank had been removed, but no.

Hope everyone is finding a little enjoyment this summer.

And I worry about loose screws and bolts?  Amazing!

General Discussion / Re: Oil

My engine re-builder told me to use 30 wgt non-detergent.  Have used exclusively since about 1998.  Oil pressure is about 28 on start up and will drop down to 24, 25 after 45 miles or so.  I wish I knew how much it burns!  The seal in the front leaks a bit; the oil drain plug drips slightly as well as some of the oil pan bolts.  Appears oil comes out of filler tube and the crankcase vent tube also.  Sounds terrible, but not that bad.  Wonder what they were like when new.

You are describing a short.  Do you smell an odor of burned insulation, see smoke from fuse block, or feel a hot wire?  It is probably worn insulation on a wire grounding itself.  Have you replaced all your wiring?  If not, look at the old stuff first especially where a wire goes through frame/fender/firewall where there will be a rubber grommet.

Since issues were with the horn initially, disconnect it and see if that corrects it.  Of course you'll need a fuse in place.  If not the horn or its wiring, examine the wiring diagram to isolate other systems such as headlights, taillight.  If you had a bad ground, there would not be enough current (amps) for this to happen, I believe.  I use a 20 amp in my '29U and the horn is independent of ignition switch.

Let us know what you find.
Good hunting,

Ian is right.  According to the master parts list, the Oil Pump Assembly p/n 41968, fits Q, U, 30U up to engine No. U-223883.   frank

Success!

Dave, here is the so-called "banjo" fitting.  I didn't understand term until someone used it with a picture.

Doug, I too used a vice, but from the marks, mine isn't that soft.  At least it's ready to accept new line.

Thanks guys,
frank

Thanks, Doug and Dave.

Removed hose from frame and took brass banjo fitting from cylinder.  Rusty fluid dripped out at frame (jeeze loueeze).  Removed cylinder and cleaned - fluid looked good.  Pistons slide nicely; no rust or pitting.

I have NOS lines from ebay this winter.  (is this serendipity?)  Now to get that hose out of the brass fitting.  That is stuck but good.  Used some WD-40 on it and guess I'll wait a bit.  Would using heat be foolish?  Replacing that fitting would be a bear, I believe.

Should the other 2 be replaced, or wait till they go belly up?  ugh either way!

Dave, if you have time to come down, give me a call.  Always have a beer with your name on it.  You need to drive this heap so you can experience shifting compared to yours.

General Discussion / Left Front Brake Inop

Bleeding brakes after winter storage.  No fluid out of LF and shoes not getting to drum.  Removed wheel and tapped lightly on pistons and they moved inward.  Next step is to remove flex hose and inspect.  All hoses were replaced about 50 years ago, 1966.  Looks ok from outside, but perhaps collapsed inside?

Any ideas appreciated.  Wheel and master cylinders sleeved with stainless several years ago.  Still using paint eating DOT 3.

Thanks,
frank

Saw this on AACA.  Useful, informative and entertaining.  Too bad I didn't know about last winter.

Chet, thanks for the instructions.  From cut Cut 3, the offset is normal.

Dave, the red one looks like an Atlas.

Chet,   I experienced same thing and have not found a solution, but this isn't a job I've practiced.   My tool looks identical to racertb picture on Mar 03.

Second that!  All the best in selling your house, Chet!  frank

(Yep, mine still stored.)

Thanks, Kimmc.

Now I understand.  I did not understand the term "lever" for what I would name a "latch," as it keeps the split from overlapping.  Or a complete, functioning one does.  If anyone has the post missing - replace it!.  I learned the hard way with an emergency trip to the doctor.  Don't fool around with this one.  I, too, use a Rim Tool.

Ted,

Can't imagine how frustrated you must be.  Ready for another red herring?  Have you disassembled the distributor down to removing the weights and top end of the shaft?  Maybe where the shafts mate is slipping??  For the record, I've never done this, but someone here probably has and may provide helpful hints.
