General Discussion / Daves's 1935 John Deere...
November 05, 2017, 05:45:41 PM
Had a busy summer, got the Plymouth rewired worked through some bugs and failed at fixing my radiator leak. At that point I was growing tired of working on her, and switched gears. Late summer and into fall the threshing shows start and I get tractor fever. (some of the reason I've been gone for a while, maybe no noticed lol)

I know this is a car forum, but you guys may get a kick out of the story and the early engineering of the equipment. Similar to the cars of the era, its interesting to see how it evolved. And like the car, I like to get things mechanically accurate and working the way they were intended when new.

Tractor Story - My Grandpa grew in north central MN. Nice area, not a lot to do for money but farm. That is what his dad did and what he did for while before and after some time spent in the tail end of WWII. In the early 70's he decided to move down to the Twin Cities metro and get a descent paying job. (which he did) He had one tractor left (maybe the only one) when he moved and had no reason to bring it to a neighborhood in a Twin Cities suburb. So it was sold to a family friend / neighbor up north. This was a 1935 B John Deere that was on the farm since he was a kid. (My Great Grandpas) He would bring it up once in while, kinda wishing he still had it. I bought an old Minneapolis Moline to restore, when he was still around, and my dad still farms and we members of tractor clubs. The interest never leaves, but when there are reminders it helps.

A number of years back I asked one of my great uncles if know the guy who bought it. He said he did and would ask if he had any interest in parting with it. He said no. Kind of put it out of mind and did not give another thought. So September this year, I get a message out of the blue. My great uncle ran into him (they live in the same area, small towns) and he was wondering if that fella was still interested in that old tractor. Indeed I was. So I contacted him and actually met up with at a tractor show in September and made arrangements to pick it up. He is 90 years old (same age as my grandpa would be) and just starting to get ready to part with some of his collection.

So roughly 44 years later, my Great Grandpas tractor is back in the family. After some light mechanical touch ups, I put it work! I buy stuff to use!

Testing step two.. Google Photos. Preferred method. Less steps, and says space is unlimited with your google account as long as you use their preferred quality settings. I reposted the first 2 pictures to see if there are any noticeable quality differences...

Using google photos. I uploaded my test photos to folder I created specifically for embedding to forums. Make sure you click into your album, then click on the settings, (3 vertical dots) then sharing options, click the switch that says anyone with a link can see these photos. Need to be organized from the start, don't want to move pictures around and break links once they are mapped.  Once in their proper destination, you click on the image and it opens to it own webpage. Right click, copy image address, on the forum reply, click Mona's picture, paste your copied URL in and you should have an embedded picture.

Testing Methods.....

Ok 2 ways it can be done with google is through Google Drive and with Google photos, but there are steps involved.

First Google drive - Steps copied from another forum credit to others see below. Too much work, and space limitations I believe.

Steps to do it:
"- Create a folder named "Public" under "My Drive" folder
- Right click on this folder, context menu opened, choose "Share..."
- In the "Share with others" dialog, click on "Get shareable link" (after that, the link icon will turn to green)
- Click on "Done" button
- Drag and drop an image to this folder
- Right click on this image, context menu opened, choose "Share..."
- In the "Share with others" dialog, click on "Copy link"
- Paste this copied link to a new tab, an image will display. Right click on this image.
- Choose "Copy image URL" from context menu
- Finally, paste this copied link to your nopCommerce forum post."

Update after reviewing from other browsers and PCs, I cannot get this method to work

General Discussion / Re: Photo Sharing - Uploading Pics

I was looking into this as well. I was using Photobucket, now my build thread is trashed because all the picture links are broken. That site was getting so ad riddled as well, it was almost unusable.

When I get time, I'll experiment with Flickr, (part of yahoo and I already have a yahoo account) and some google app must have a way to embed them, I don't see them going away anytime soon.

General Discussion / Re: Windshield wipper assy.

"ยง 4310 Windshield wiper.

Every windshield on a motor vehicle shall be equipped with a device for cleaning rain, snow or other moisture from the windshield. The device shall be so constructed as to be controlled or operated by the driver of the vehicle."

Doesn't say how, just that it has to be controlled by the driver. Is there an easy way to rig it up to manually manipulate like some other earlier cars? Just to pass? I doubt the inspectors could tell you what year they moved to vacuum or electric operation.

I'm sure glad I don't have to deal with that bullshit. I registered the plate, once and done. They don't even look at the car. Could roll it right out of a barn, no brakes etc. and it would be up to the cop to get you.

I got the car rewired all exterior lights working.

The wiring harness was missing wire for the dome light, not sure if I am going to just run the modern wire ( it will be hidden) or wait until i order some other items and get the cotton wrap.

I ran across this site catalog here > http://restorationstuff.com/pdf/RestorationSupplyCompany.pdf

It has a lot of good stuff, I haven't found on other sites. Including bulbs and those brass buttons I was looking for.

Also the file host i was using to post pictures changed their policy so I have find a new way. You may have noticed a lot of pages in this thread are missing pictures.

Thanks for the picture. I was getting curious and there was a little play in the switch tempting me, but it it tested out. And if its not broke I figured I better not fix until it was ....

I ended up cutting the crimp off flat, drilled and soldered on the new connectors. Slowly installing sections of the new harness. Should be able to make some progress this weekend.

Can anyone recommend a good source for bulbs and correct plug wires? Filling station? (I didn't look through the catalog yet)

The other week I was cruising around the neighborhood and luckily it happened when I was back in my yard the car just quit. Spark related. Hadn't happened before. Checked the basics, found no issues was leaning toward that old original coil I had repaired. (see earlier in the thread) Neighbor helped me get it back in the a garage, but the cause was bugging me. Grabbed another coil of off the shelf wired it in quick, car started right up. Patted myself on the back and though what a great mechanic I would of been back in the thirties. Happen to find a new old stock coil on ebay bought it up. Figured I had a working key and top pot metal part, I would be back in business and still original in short order.

The next week Frank was over. I was pulling a few things apart, assuming that coil was junk asked him should I try it one more time before I yank it out?    Sure!   ....car fired right up..... Puzzled I asked if he was feeling brave? and off on a successful test drive we went. I don't know what happened, I am just going to rewire it and hope for the best. Guess its best to have a spare one of everything you can find...but hey I got a new coil. Tabs aren't even bent.

Vacuum Pump - Cleaned up the Kingston can I picked up the other year,(best I could) Frank left me some Red-Kote. So I coated the seams and left it to dry.

First problem. New wiring kit comes with smaller connectors for the headlight plug ins, they fall through. Old ones were crimped and were not intended to be reused. I tried to expand them, but they are splitting. Anybody know off hand a place to find replacements? (maybe a ford part, same headlamps) I'll give a look at a few catalogs, but will probably just try and solder them together.

Prepping for wiring. Uncovered the Clum switch, literally just the outline of it showing. It was so covered in years of grease and blow by, I felt like an archaeologist. Got it out, cleaned up grabbed my fluke and Ohmed out all switch positions to make sure they were good. Checked the connections to the wiring diagrams. Pictures below for those who may not have seen one, or just like lots of pictures.  :)
