General Discussion / Re: Spark plug wires
June 03, 2012, 07:50:26 PM
I ended up going to my local John Deere dealership. They had all the metal plug ends, boots for both ends, and the wire type plug wires in bulk. They fixed me right up. and reasonable, less than a ten spot. It may or maynot look like original equipment, but works.

General Discussion / Re: 1939 Plymouth

Hi Tony, The 39 is Great. I have put 1200 miles on it since I bought it, drives and rides really nice.  I had all the fenders and bumpers off, to refit and put in new bead welting. Now I have it in the garage and am pulling all the sheet metal off again. I am pulling the engine, I want to go thru the engine with a fine tooth comb to make sure I can take it on long trips if I want. I will know by mid week what I need. lol Hope it doen't involve too much cost in parts.  The machine shop in town here has given me real reasonable price on boring, plaining, and grinding the crankshaft (if needed) The sheet metal will go to a professional restorer in town so he can work on it while I get the engine back together, when he is ready I will tow the body in to him. I think I will stay with  "Black" (maybe)
How you coming with the Dodge? Have you been driving?  Keep us updated?
Take care of you

I used a 1 inch putty knife to scape out most of the "Crude" from the Trans and Diff cases, then used kerosene and a stiff parts brush to get it as clean as posible, it took a lot of rinsing also. You do get to check the gears out when it gets clean also, that was a big plus. Refilled with straight 90W, I am happy now. Everybody that has tryed this may have a different way of cleaning the parts but all end up with the same outlook. lol  looks good to me what ever way you do it.

Hey Tony, I understand where you are coming from, been there - done that.lol
Now I am gong to move my front bumper back about 3 inches, I can do that without effecting the look very much (on the 1939 Roadking).  The reasoning? I need a car that is 3 inches shorter so it will fit in my enclosed trailer. Right now only the 29 Plymouth will fit. I like to haul them to the parades, etc,  and there are a lot of "Centenial" cellibrations this year also. Take care,

Try the POC Site, there is some real good info on removing wheels from the 29s. Try the search function, "Remove wheel on 1929 Model"  should bring up some good info. late 2010 thru Sep 2011.

I always use an Oil Filter Wrench, the kind that tightens up when you turn it loose. The wheels themselves you need a puller that screws on where you took the hub cap off. Good Luck, I manages to do it, and if I can I'm sure you can. It took me a while before I got it right.

Does anybody know of any sites that cover the Plymouth cars, between the P4 and the P15 series? I am finding it very hard to find out anything about the 1939 model P7 and P8 particulary. I have only seen very few other 1939 model, William Steeds and one other convertible. I saw a couple P8 sedans but no P7's. Is the P7 that scarce? If that is true, that would be one more reason to try get this one as original as posible.  I have been using this one as a daily driver, and am catching up with Bob Drown on miles driven.. LOL  (I'll meet you half way for coffee Bob)

I think Tony hit it on the head.  I had  to remove the soft plugs on my 39, there was so much crap inside the block I found it hard to beleive. The bottom plugs still did not drain until I pocked a screwdriver thru the crap. The only way to really clean this out is pulling the soft plugs.  I have back flushed old radiators also, almost every time there were more holes. lol  It was a good time to find those holes thou, you might luck out, maybe worth trying, can't hurt.

General Discussion / Re: 30U oil consumption

Jim. I would guess that the Oil Rings (Bottom ring) are carboned up or just stuck from oil, or a funk from aluminum build up from the pistons? , also from sitting a long period. Regardless, you need new rings, not just a clean up job. , from sitting a long period (you didn't say how long) This probable would be the scenario that would be your best to hope for, rather than bad cylinder walls.  lol  Good luck with that, hopefully we will have some warm weather now, always nicer to work with the garage doors open. lol  I have heard of a product that you put in your cylinders that is supposed to free up stuck rings, I don't know if that would help thou, never heard anybody that tryed it say that it did. Personnally, I don't think valve guides could use that amount of oil.
