My car has seen many repairs and restoration attempts over its long history. So I am always questioning whether items or construction was original, true to original, or not even close. Since I have finished the wood framing I have been slowly working on the body work in preparation for the paint shop. My driver's side front fender had a lot of small holes left from poor body filler repairs. Metal patches need to be welded to the underside of the fender. Since I am not an expert welder I decided to remove the fender rather then trying to weld thin steel against gravity.
Here is my Question:
There are 5 screws holding the fender to the car frame. Is the picture below representative of how the fender was originally attached or were these screws carriage bolts ? I had to drill one of these out and the screw and eyelet were brass ? The square back bolts appear to be original. Does this look and sound correct ??
See picture below of what I have on my car.
Tks Chet...
I'm pretty sure someone sent me a picture at one point and I noticed carriage bolts holding the fenders to to the frame, the 'square' cut seems to confirm this. When I remount my fenders I will be using carriage bolts, I seem to remember the bolts were chrome too, and not body color matched.

FYI the fender holes were not squared but elongated round for minor adjustment. The nuts on the screws were old fashion square nuts with star and flat washer.
For what it's worth, my 30-U fenders are mounted with the slotted screws you show in your picture and the nuts are square. No carriage bolts.

I think these are original.., hopefully we will get a few more responses to confirm the same. Thanks
Chet, you have original slotted bolt and washer. They were plated in the beginning and I used chrome. frank
Thanks Frank, that explains both posts and the original material used.
Were they chrome or nickel. Maybe I can find this hardware in stainless steel. Just a thought.
What about the hardware for the sheet metal under the radiator. Were they plated also?
I used chrome since they are exterior parts. You might try Restoration Specialties & Supply. If not in their catalog, call them.
What about the hardware holding the Sheetmetal below the radiator. 3 Carriage bolts. Left, Right, and center
Chet, all of mine have the carriage bolt style heads...looking at them underneath, there are nuts and washers. I don't believe this is original, but not sure.

Are you talking about the carriage bolts below the radiator holding the sheet metal. I believe these are original, just looking for verification. Originally painted or plated ?
Yes, the bolts below the radiator as well as the bolts that attach the fenders.

Thanks Ted,
Forgot to mention that mine are painted all black (like the fenders, etc.), probably done when car restored in the '80's.
I go with black, too.
At quick glance the fender screws are all showing silver.
Closer look it appears they have black paint on them. See below for the better examples of paint traces.
Dave,
See what below. ?? Sorry my iPhone didn't show the failed pictures.

I forgot to move them into my shared public folder. Thought of it after I posted last night.
Using google to host pictures is much easier than anything else. Phone cloud syncs photos automatically and does any file conversions necessary.
I will continue to convert and upload to the sites picture host with the important stuff, continue building the database.
