General Discussion / Re: I need some advise...
March 10, 2013, 12:00:06 AM
Doug, I'm like you just a little late with my thoughts.

Kim, Sorry I didn't get to this sooner.

An easy way to pull the engine, if your going to pull the transmission, is to also pull the flywheel and bell housing. This way there is nothing to  worry about with the steering column and Clum switch.

By the way it is easy to remove the Clum switch by just loosening the nut on the bottom,  which holds it onto the headlight switch shaft, and then loosen the side bolt on the trottle control arm, and the whole thing simple slides off the bottom of the shaft.

Just my thoughts.

Kim, I think your really smart to go with the original babbits. I know a fellow here locally that had the inserts but in and before they were done he had a fortune in just the engine.

If it was me the less you have to mess with on the engine for just an occasional drive is just greatl.

Wishing you the best.

General Discussion / Re: HELP - BATTERY BOILED
February 17, 2013, 12:28:40 AM
Luckily it turned out not to be nearly as bad as I thought when I opened up the shop.
Took out the seats and rubber floor mat. Had to dispose of the jute material under the rubber mat. Took out the battery, pulled the car out and washed downt the floor boards and area around the battery box really well. Mixed up a spray of a box of baking soda in a gallon of water and spayed that all over the same area. Didn't get nearly the reaction I expected. Almost none at all. Then rinsed again with a fair spray of water.

New jute and a new battery and we are on the way again. Surprised me, but the battery was 5 1/2 years old. Guess the Battery Tenders really do work.

Hope nothng serious shows up in the future.

General Discussion / Re: Radiator cap question
February 17, 2013, 12:13:24 AM
The parts book lists caps as follows:

Raditor filler cap assembly --- Q, U, part number 43137
                                            30-U, part number 314253
PA (optional equipment) up to 1670001 U. S. built , PB, part number 392919
PA (standard equipment) -- PA after 1670001 U.S. built, PB, part number 380375

The Q and U had the winged cap. The 30U had the flat, what I call the bat wing cap. The reason the 30U cap is so hard to find is that people simply disposed of the plain flat cap and replaced it with the winged version.

Just my thoughts.

General Discussion / HELP - BATTERY BOILED
February 08, 2013, 08:57:17 PM
I'm not sure what to do. I put my battery charger on my car yesterday, as my battery was low when I tried to start my car.

I set the timer and locked up the shop. But, today I went to the shop and when I opened the door I could smell the battery acid. The timer on the charger didn't functio and the battery was boiling.

HELP. Do I need to do anything special to the upholstrery and or any other items like paint to protect it. The smell of battery acid is terrible and I'm sure the fumes have permiatted everything around.

Any suggestions would be really welcome. Washing with soda, dry clening, anything PLEASE.

General Discussion / Re: Fuel line size
January 10, 2013, 10:29:46 PM
Sorry not much help, but I do watch and care.

Mine is a 30U with the fuel pump. The line is 1/4" all the way from tank to carb.

I'm no expert, but the only cap that I have ever seen as "correct" for the 30 is that one that OLD MAN shows in the brouchure picture.

General Discussion / Re: Hubcaps - What do these fit?
October 05, 2012, 04:35:19 PM
These caps were used on the 30 - 32 wood wheel cars. The difference in the length is to allow for the aluminum beauty cover that was used to cover up the center hub and bolts. The front cap already sets out away from the wheel by virtue of the front bearings and hub design. To allow the rear cap to set out the same distance from the hub the rear one had to be extended.

I am currently laid up from an operation on my foot, but will try to get some pictures as soon as it can.

General Discussion / Re: Red Head?
August 10, 2012, 10:31:32 PM
Looking at my parts book "PLYMOUTH MASTER PARTS LIST" for all models prior to 1934 it has the following listing for heads.

Cylinder Head  Q --- part number 42721
Cylinder Head  U --- part number 301074
Cylinder Head (silver dome) 30-U --- part number 310271
Cylinder Head (silver dome) PA --- part number 394996
Cylinder Head ...PAX, PBX (small bore engine) --- part number 376819
Cylinder Head (silver dome) -- PB ---part number 387542
Cylinder Head (red head) (also includes 385441 cover) PB --- part number 390864
Cylinder Head (silver dome) (use 381552 tim.cov.) PC --- part number 610638
Cylinder Head (red head) (use 385440 tim.cov.) PC  --- part number 610639
Cylinder Head (aluminum) (service package) PC, PD ---part number 615811
Cylinder Head (red head) PCX (small bore engine) --- part number 603074
Cylinder Head ((silver dome) --PCX up to engine PCX-1371 (use 381533 timing hole cover) and after engine PCX-1371 (use 385432 timing hole cover) (small bore engine)
Cylinder Head (silver dome) PD --- Part number 610650
Cylinder Head (red head)  PD --- part number 610652
Cylinder Head PDX (small bore engine) --- Part number 610654

It appears that there is a reference for the "red head" for the PB, PC and PD - interesting that these call for a different timing gear cover

There is a reference for the "aluminum head" for the PC and PD - different head gasket, studs, and washers
These are all the references to Cylinder head. There are a lot of listings for studs, washers etc.

Hope this helps

Did a little more digging into my Parts book.
It lists part number 71028 for the Q after RW-167-P (US built) and GP-323-D (Canadian built)
And part number 301090 for the U.
Not sure if that is the difference between straight and curved of maybe straight used on the old Maxwell engine.

Not really sure about the export cars, but think the 28 & 29 cars had a straight tube spark plug wire holder and the 30U had one that curved down toward the distributor.  (Note: the curved one has one of the holders that go to the head bolt missing, and that it is a little longer toward the back or fire wall than the straight one)
