General Discussion / Headlight info needed
December 02, 2022, 10:36:58 PM
I have been helping the lady we bought the 29 from try to clean out her late husbands shop. I came across two depressed beam head light lenses, two reflectors, two bezels and one bucket. The lenses say 9 5/16 x 8 3/4. Could these have came off the 29 or be some he was trying to piece together to replace the ones on it now?

I have also acquired a steering column and wheel that is more complete than what we have now. It needs some work but the sector has no slack and its at least a start to get it a little more correct.

General Discussion / How does the radiator mount?
November 26, 2022, 04:28:02 PM
I have the radiator I found checked and ready to install when the grill shell comes back from the chrome shop. The radiator in it now isn't original and looks like its just bolted in with some bolts & big flat washers. I know that's not correct. The radiator and the frame have 4 big holes so I am guessing there should be some kind of rubber mount. Anyone have a picture so maybe I can fabricate something?

General Discussion / Radiator & Grill
October 28, 2022, 08:26:15 PM
I stumbled onto this for sale. The owner isn't sure what year it came from but it sure looks like ours and the grill shell is in a lot better shape. The radiator looks right too but he doesn't know anything about it. Do they look right for a 29U?

We won first in class but I think we were the only entry. Hey a win by default is still a win right?

Things you are looking for. / Rear view mirror
July 03, 2022, 03:53:05 PM
I need the mirror for our 29 Touring. I have the bracket and ball but nothing to clamp to it. We have mirrors on the spare tires but the ball looks kinda lonely just hanging there in the middle of the windshield.

General Discussion / Everyone Loves a Parade
June 25, 2022, 03:32:10 PM
Ok it was a little parade in a little town but its ours and we love it. Everything went well. Here is the 29 with the Grand Marshal. She loved it! It was getting pretty warm outside by the time it was over but no cars overheated or did anything else embarrassing. It was a good day!

When the parade was over we ate at a local restaurant and probably spent a hour there then drove home which is a mile or so. When she was pulling into the garage it died but restarted easily. She got it in the garage and I opened the hood nearly burning my hand on the handle. I though wow this thing is HOT. I shot it with my infrared thermometer and the head and water neck read 106 degrees F which wasn't far from the outside temp. The exhaust manifold read over 300 so I know the gun was working. I don't know why it died but at its age as far as I am concerned its allowed to be a little cranky.

General Discussion / Driveshaft disc near disaster
June 18, 2022, 03:31:50 PM
The last post about the clutch install actually happened a couple o weeks ago. Fast forward to Thursday. My wife is planning on driving the 29 in our local Jim Bowie parade a week from Saturday (today). I thought I had everything good to go but we wanted to drive it on a hot day to make sure it won't overheat. She drove it around town for about 30 minutes and I got the call. I'm in trouble the car made a lot of noise and now it won't even roll and its in the middle of the street.

When I got there and crawled under it I saw why. The front of the driveshaft had torn loose on two of the three lugs and was wedged against the e-brake as you can see in the picture. The discs were new and had less than 20 miles on them. I'm not going to say where they came from but most of you know. If you have these discs I hope you have better luck than I did.

I went home and got some tools then spent about 30 minutes under the car getting the driveshaft out. We borrowed a rock from someone's yard decorations to chalk the wheel so it wouldn't roll away when I got it unhung. Then we carefully towed the old girl home and got the neighbors to help us push it in the garage. Not fun on a 100 degree day!

I have the old discs back in for the parade. They are in terrible shape and I used fender washers where they were the worst. Even though they are very old they were still together when I replaced them and I feel they are made out of far better material than the new ones I bought.

I informed the seller and he claimed his discs were stronger than the old ones but he has had a "few" problems with them. There is no way they are as good as the old material as they are mostly hard rubber with some strings in them. I am going to put the pieces in a envelope and send them back.

General Discussion / Clutch & Starter Ring Install
June 18, 2022, 12:01:35 AM
I'm going to try this again. We have had out of town family here so I haven't been online much.
The starter ring and clutch were in pretty bad shape and the starter was even worse so I tore into it. When I got it apart I found that at sometime in the past someone had put a ring rear on that was several thousands bigger in od and id. To make it fit they had to turn the flywheel down about .125 and put a spacer on it. I am guessing they had to do that because a spacer that would just make up the small difference would have been very thin and impossible to make. The slightly larger od made the starter bendex bottom out and eventually broke the shaft between the set screws that hold the bendex on. It still worked which is pretty amazing.

I purchased a original ring rom Al's ring gears and to make it work I had to have the spacer (still on the flywheel) turned down about .025 to get the proper interference fit of .020.

I had the clutch rebuilt at Kentucky Clutch. They found the original pressure plate was cracked and sent one a little different. I am guessing its a little later model. I sent the throwout bearing in with the clutch and they returned it after checking it. They shipped the clutch back the same day they received it!

I took the starter to Classic Generator in Midlothian Texas and he rebuilt it with a new armature and had it done in a week! I'll put the rest of the pictures in a reply

General Discussion / Just a thought...
April 09, 2022, 10:28:01 AM
We plan to go to the Pate Swap Meet later this month. Its huge and we are not able to walk the whole thing but will cover part of it anyway. I was thinking that if I had a list of 28-29 parts people needed we might stumble on to something. I couldn't buy and ship a bunch of stuff but maybe I could connect someone to a vendor and they could work out the details.

General Discussion / Drain Plug gasket
March 27, 2022, 09:45:20 PM
The drain plug on the 29 is dripping and its plenty tight. I need to change the oil anyway so does anyone know where to get a copper gasket that size or even what size it is. I don't want to drain the oil and have to search for a gasket.

But for the life of me I can't get them to post. When I click the attachment button it asks me for the file. I put the file in the box and nothing shows up. It has worked for me in the past but now I can't get it to work. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

General Discussion / Driveshaft discs again
March 09, 2022, 10:25:24 PM
We still don't own the 29 Touring but I am fixing some things on it. The discs are in really bad shape so I am hunting for some. I have found 2 companies that have them or claim to. This one is really expensive and seem to be the wrong thickness although he says they fit. https://www.colletizer.com/store/p72/Universal_Joint_Flex_Disc_and_New_Washers_L373T.html#/

This one has some that are 1/4" thick and are a bit more affordable but thinner than the 5/16 that I have seen here as original equipment. https://www.franklincar.org/forsale/service.html

Does anyone have any other sources?

I have been reading old posts here and this seems to be the most tech oriented forum on these old gems. I have posted on a couple of other Mopar forums before I figured out how to join this one so you may have seen this subject there.
I have been working on a 29 Touring for a lady friend /club member so it can be in the local Christmas parade. I got it running and after fixing stuck floats and several other little things I got it drivable. The clutch was not releasing completely so I adjusted it. While under the car I looked around and found that it needs some pretty major repairs. The drive shaft needs new fiber discs and the back one is really cobbled together. It has only 2 discs and no bolts that are correct. The rear main is leaking pretty bad. I removed the dust cover and greased the throw out bearing. While in there I saw that the ring gear is really chewed up. It starts but is noisy and its days are numbered. The spring shackles are all worn badly too. There are other things here and there but those are the ones that scare me. It runs like a top but I did notice that the distributor will move some which makes me worry about the drive.

I wonder if I bought it how hard is it going to be to find a flywheel or a ring gear? I know the discs are available and the distributor drive piece can be ordered from Germany. The car looks really good for its age. It has been painted sometime in its past and the seats rebuilt with good foam and vinyl covers. We really like the car but I do have other projects and I don't want to spend the next year hunting swap meets for parts that I may or may not find.
