General Discussion / Re: POC National meet in Tucson

Glenn,

I wish mine was road worthy, (wish I was!)  Of course you could drive circles around me.

A local Ply club member was pretty emphatic when he said "No!" he wouldn't travel with me because I went too slow; this trip was only about 200 miles.  At least he was forthright, no one else said a word.

Safe trip!  It will be a fun adventure!

General Discussion / Re: Fuel delivery problem?
March 07, 2013, 05:56:20 PM
Re: Plan A.  Brings back laughable memories.

After I got vac tank functioning, my engine would quit running from time to time, regardless of speed/rpm, due to lack of gas.  I would disconnect the fuel line at the vac tank, put a lip-lock on the line and blow until you could hear the bubbles in the tank.  Cured symptom for a bit, and I was  never stranded.  My experience was, when my fuel line was plugged, the engine did not run at all.  There was no filter on that line, just a glass sediment bowl between vac tank and carb.  (I never left home without that wrench and still carry it to this day!)

For what it's worth,

Racertb,

Your description does sound like it is not getting enough fuel at that rpm, even though intermittent.  Can you replicate symptom in the garage?  I think you're on track with cleaning filter first. Can you verify vac tank/fuel pump is functioning properly?  My next step would be to remove carb and clean all jets, as much as I dislike doing this.

I hope someone can give you better info, like a quirk in the distributor??  Please keep us posted and good luck.

Hi folks,

I'm looking for a picture of original interior or faithful reproduction that shows where the B pillar intersects the bottom section of the front seat.  I don't believe my setup is quite correct.

Also, if anyone knows what original material and color covered the interior of the firewall and the "kick panels" (side panel from front door to firewall), that info is appreciated as well.

Thanks for your assistance,
frank

I like your engine dolly.  Beats the heck out of the little red wagon I used and safer, too.

It will be interesting to hear what internals you decide to replace.  My 1st time, just the babbitt and the rings.  A 2nd time was required when a piston skirt disintegrated.

Kim - great work!!  I wish my dad would have had the PolyAll back when.  He did most of woodwork and spent a lot of cutting and time shaping, I the mechanical.  Your car will be fantastic when done.  frank

Doug, from the pictures, that is a nice looking roadster and nice price, too.

Old Man, caps for sale: Don Summer, 105 Kinross, Clawson MI, 48017.  248.435.6115 or 435.2916 no web or email.  From "The Plymouth Bulletin" Parts Reproducers section.

Advertising 28-29, 31-32 parking cap; 31-32 goddess; 33 goddess (lock-on) and hood ornament; 34 & 35 ship.  Did not list a 30, but might be worth a call.  I bought one for 29.  Very nice, and you pay for it!

General Discussion / Re: HELP - BATTERY BOILED
February 09, 2013, 03:14:19 PM
Gary, I too am sorry to hear - that's terrible fortune!

You and Tinkeys are correct - rinse/soak in a lot of water to dilute.  I would add plain baking soda to the water, sodium bicarbonate - a mild base, to help neutralize the sulfuric acid.  This solution can then be thoroughly rinsed.  Never had to use on fabric, but have cleaned battery terminals with it.

Good Luck!

Jason,  puzzling, I don't have another address.  I received your 1st email with 15 files attached and your 2nd asking if 48 pages were received.  Did you get my reply?    frank

My goodness!!  Thanks for the warning to check out any strange noises.  Good luck to you with both the 38 and 29 projects going at same time- whew!  frank

Sure Chet, go ahead and post it there.

Maybe it would be helpful to identify what number is cast in the carb body. e.g. I believe an RT-08 can be configured to a Carter 130S or 130SA for a 29U, which is on my engine.  The DRT-08 to a 209S (209-S) and maybe the 210-S as listed in Master Parts list for a PA.

Hi John,
I don't know, I'm guessing your looking at Plate 37, my copy of the April 1, 1934 Master Parts List.  For those not having a copy, this shows several part #'s for this carb.  Some are exclusive Plymouth P/N, most are Carter.

Carb (export only)-U after Y-082-LR U S built, 30-U up to U-237404   **131-SA
Carb..........................................................30-U up to U-225814     306203
Carb...........................................30-U after engine No. U-225814   **156-S
Carb (export only)-30-U after engine No. U-237407........................   **158-S
Carb(RHD only).......................................30-U up to No. U-239017    306204
Carb(RHD only)..............................30-U after engine No. U-239017   **157-S

**Carter number.

I also have copies of 3 CARTER CARBURETOR CORP book pages, one of which says

Form 4304 Replacing Form 4246  PLYMOUTH  "30-U" - 1930-31   Carbureter 156S, Revised 1932

This drawing is the "short" accelerating pump.  The diagrams of the 130S-130SA (1929-30) and D-209S (1931) also shows a short pump.

It appears Chrysler was having fun with folks like us who are attempting to get these things period correct.  At this date, I'm not sure any one alive and coherent really knows for sure!  Not a slam- just who knows what was what 83 odd years hence now-a-days??

frank

I'm guessing the 306203 & 306204 are "long vertical" pump, but don't really know.
