The number on the side of the rod is 301-005-D-B14 I think the 301--005 is the number that matters as the rods out of both engines share this # The bearing measures 1.94 or so.

General Discussion / Engine problem I need a rod

Well the old girl developed a knock. Upon dropping the pan I found part of a piston skirt in the sump. What I also found was on the same cylinder the safety wire holding the rod nuts had broken and the rod nuts were loose. One was loose enough I took it off with my fingers and the other had a little piece of wire still in it. When I took that out the nut wasn't much more than finger tight. My theory is that whoever put it together didn't torque that rod and it eventually sheered the wire letting one nut back off even more. The knock was the piston hitting the head. The rod runs very close to the piston skirts so it wacked the skirt breaking it.

The block is .060 and I have found a piston from Egge. What I need is a connecting rod that is babbitted .040. The one I have has one bolt that seems bent a little and some wear on the bearing from being ran loose. I might get away with using it but I am not very confident. I have another block that has freeze cracks that is also .060 over but it has inserted bearings and the crank is standard.

I am going to call a couple of places that rebabbitt rods tomorrow and see if they have anything or can repair the one I have.

Quote from: chetbrz on May 16, 2023, 03:00:37 PMSearch on Ford model A T for open body cars.  Probably a Trico setup for an open car.  Actually that is what I am using on my 29 sedan. The on/off is on the Trico motor.

You will need to do some research to find a best fit. Is there a vacuum line going to the windshield.
There are no vacuum lines going anywhere on our car. There is a pipe plug in the intake where one could go. The fuel pump tank contraption it has is not hooked up to anything but its a vacuum operated one not one that uses oil pressure. I have took it apart and cleaned and replaced the gaskets but haven't tried it yet. I am guessing the plugged hole in the intake was hooked to the fuel pump at one time. I guess it could have had a T in to go to both. I wouldn't really care if the wiper worked as we won't ever drive this car in the rain. I just don't like the empty holes.

If you notice there are three holes in the windshield frame for a wiper. I wish I could find one!

The professional photographer took this. I think its pretty cool. I wish I knew how to photoshop the wedding stuff  and shadows out

Our daughters second daughter got married Saturday and we were ask to deliver the bride and take the couple from the reception. It was in field close to where she was raised and has dreamed of getting married there all her life. Needless to say it rained all week and even into Friday evening which also had temps in the 50's. That is totally unreal in Texas in April!

Saturday it warmed up and the wind howled all day drying out the field nicely. The wedding was @7Pm and the wind died allowing everything to be set up. My oldest son dressed in 20's attire delivered the bride to a unexpecting crowd. A really cool moment was about halfway through the ceremony a owl that was very nearby hooted his "Who Who"  It was truly a magical moment! That is what we bought the car for! After the reception which was in the same location he took them away (about a half a mile). I don't have many pictures but here is one I took of the escape and one of their chauffer and his wife. You cannot view this attachment. You cannot view this attachment.

General Discussion / Re: Bugs and Pollen

Quote from: chetbrz on April 24, 2023, 03:02:04 PMThe wife and I took out the 29 for a 22-mile run around the neighborhood.  The fuel pump seems to be working properly and the brake light switch that Touring29 recommended installed and worked just fine.

Now if it doesn't rain this coming weekend, we will drive up to our nearby state park to meet up with our local car club.  Now to attend to the Bugs & Pollen collected on our venture.

Cheers, Chet...

We also have weekend plans for our 29. Our granddaughter wants to arrive and leave from her wedding Saturday. Its going to be outside in what years ago was a plowed pasture. If we get much rain between now and then like they are predicting it may be a disaster. Our oldest son will be her driver and is going to dress in 20's fashion. I figure that she will either have great pictures or great stories about the guests chairs sinking in the mud and their shoes getting pulled off their feet. It will be a few years before the stories become "great"
I somehow made this whole message blue and look like its a quote. I don't know how to fix it so blue it will stay unless a moderator wants to fix it

General Discussion / Re: Another "what is it?"

I see where ours was mounted many many moons ago. They put the starter solenoid (our car has key start) in the way of the link. Three of the holes are empty and painted over and the forth has the wire clip shown in the picture attached to the screw.

I would like to hide the solenoid either under the dash or floorboard and install the torque damper where it belongs.
I have toyed with the idea of trying to find all the parts and put the starter button back on the floor but the key start was a pretty handy invention.

Quote from: Touring29 on April 21, 2023, 08:13:03 PMI have no idea

Grounding fixture which provides positive ground to the firewall from the engine. Attach to engine head and firewall.

Our car doesn't have one the negative battery cable goes to a transmission bolt and the frame has a cable to the engine.
I don't see how that contraption would work very well with the link being able to pivot.
Maybe I should put it on anyway so it would at least look more original. Anyone have a picture?

If you are down to fixing your dome light on one of these old girls your car must be pretty nice! How about some pictures? The forum needs traffic and we all love Model U's

I can't help you I have no dome or light ;)You cannot view this attachment.  but stopping and asking before you break a brittle nearly 100 year old piece is wise on your part.

General Discussion / Re: Brake Light Switch
April 13, 2023, 04:45:31 PM
When we got our 29 the switch wasn't wired up but also didn't work. I put a new switch in and wired up the lights and it worked fine. Until last week when the new switch failed. If you get your new switch ready to install and unscrew the old and put in the new there shouldn't get any air in the system. If you don't plug the hole with a new switch I think all your fluid will run out in the floor.

You reminded me to order a new switch

General Discussion / Re: Hub Puller

I haven't pulled any of the other wheels to see if they have the holes or not. My main project car is sitting right next to the 29 ready for the paint shop to get to it. I'm trying to keep any airborne contaminates from wandering around and getting on it. Its covered but I'm paranoid. Therefore I'm doing the least dirty work in there that I can. I had to do something with the leaky cylinder since the car is supposed to be used in my granddaughter's wedding in a couple of weeks.
