General Discussion / windshield side channel
May 21, 2013, 02:00:19 PM
My 30U needs the windshield side sash channels installed.  Can anyone tell me their orientation?  I have one that looks like it was attached 1/4 from the top or bottom of the glass but I don't know which.  And I don't know which side of the channel is in and which is out.  One of my channels still has glass pieces in it and the other is clean with no clues about where it goes.  The windshield is now mounted solidly in place but I'd like to get it moving up and down.

Regards and thanks for all your help.  jim

General Discussion / Oil Pressure
April 22, 2013, 07:23:29 PM
Thanks forum for the archives info on oil pump priming.  My rebuilt 30U engine had no oil pressure.  (An ugly feeling)  The archives had an article that is spot on.  I primed the 30U using an opening just above the oil pressure regulator on the left side of the block.  Just removed a pipe plug, filled the oil channel with 1/2 quart of oil, gave it a squirt of air, replaced the plug and wa-la, oil pressure when turning the engine with the starter and without spark plugs.

I told this to a VW guy who was not the least surprised.  He went thru the same thing with his VW.  Only his solution was to fill the oil pump with grease.  That alternative (vasalene) is also in forum archives.

   Many, many thanks.  jim

General Discussion / 30U oil consumption
March 26, 2012, 04:55:39 PM
This year i hope to lower the oil consumption of my 30U.  It is using about a quart every 40 miles and seems to have a lot of "blow by".  The blow by is enough to require stopping the engine to add oil.  With the engine running the blow-by will not allow oil to go down the filler tube.  The compression is right at 65 pounds and the plugs don't seem to be fouled.  (although I haven't started it for a couple of months and my memory may not be correct).  Could this be a valve guide problem?  The engine sat idle for years before coming to me.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Regards, jim

General Discussion / rod bearing
January 23, 2009, 02:59:54 PM
We have had summer like weather for the last two weeks so I took my trusty 30U for a few spins.  On the last trip to the store she developed a terrible knock when starting And, oil pressure took a big drop at idle.  One rod bearing is missing about one inch of shoulder on the bottom half.  My guess is this allows the oil to escape and causes a knock untill pressure returns.  It looks new and shows very little if any wear.  The question is should just one babbitt rod bearing be replaced and do you know someone that might pour or sell one.   Thanks, Jim

My 30U has a deep grove in the flywheel from some past clutch disc .  the current disc has lots of material.  Should or can  the flywheel be resurfaced?  It also suffers from a bad pilot bearing and pressure plate.   all advise is welcome, thanks, jim

General Discussion / serial number
March 28, 2008, 09:04:29 PM
My 30U has the engine number U237191 and body number 383-4318 but no serial number on the door post.  Can these two existing numbers be used to find out about the car?

Thanks, Jim

Can the rear main oil seal be replaced with engine in car?  If so is it worth doing?
i just replaced the pinion seal and found the transmission needs a seal so why not go on to the engine.
Thanks for the past and future help.  Jim
