I wouldn't fool with a bad wheel, especially a front wheel. There are plenty of things you can do to tighten a wood spoke wheel but they are all temporary.  I think you are making the right decision. Who are you going to use for the job?

Calimer's Wheel Shop..,  I am close enough to drive up there and drop the wheel off.  3 hours

Ted,

I have been messing with this wheel for awhile now.  It's time to get it fixed. Just to far gone.  To much lateral movement for a front wheel.

Well I gave it one more try.  I installed the new drum on the old wheel and everything seemed OK.  I took it out for a drive today and clocked 25 miles.  The brake problem was fixed and I thought that was it .  Pulling the car into the garage I could hear the passenger side wheel clicking.  I jacked the car up and the wheel had to much side to side play.  At first I thought I had a loose wheeling bearing nut but it was the wood spokes.  This has been an ongoing problem with this wheel.

Anyway I will take the wheel to be respoked but I still might need to move my car so I installed the 19" wheel with the 6.00-19 6 Ply tire.  This wheel with that one good tire is two inches larger in diameter then my stock 20" wheels with the 4.75/500 20" tires.  see below:

Oh well,  Chet...

PS.., The wife loves the wood wheel look.

Ted,

Measure the width and the diameter of empty rim.  I assume it doesn't fit on your car ?  You also have 20" tires.

The OD of a 20" Rim edge to edge is approximately 21"
The OD of a 19" Rim edge to edge is approximately 20 & 1/4" or 20"

The inside radius difference is only 1/2"
Outside rim width edge to edge (no tire) is approximately 4"
4 lug wheel.

Tks Chet...

Hi Ted,

Nice hearing from you I hope things are going well.  I decided to try and fix the front wheel and probably keep or sell the 19" wheels. They are nicely respoked.  Not much difference other than the actual tire size marked on the tire.  Both the 19" and 20" 4.75/500 tires have the same 30" OD.  So for now hopefully I can get this back on the road with the 20" wheels.

PS... If you do have one that you don't need I would be interested to complete the set.  4 wheels and a spare.  I'll be in your area visiting my daughter during the two weeks after Xmas.

Well I spent another day screwing with these 19" 30u wood wheels.  I removed another tire which was a battle.  Those All State ( 6.00-19 6 Ply ) tires after some 50+ years are hard as a rock.  I removed the air valve to release the air and the tires still would not flex.  It was like they were filled with cement.  OK I'm exaggerating a bit.., but still very close to reality.  I had to cut the tire to get a little bit of play to separate the split rim even with using the Atlas tire tool.  Unfortunately the Kelsey latch is broken on this rim.  I guess I could weld it back in place.

Anyway:

To complete this project I would need:
Purchase 5 new tires and tubes ( 4 for the car and 1 spare )  Expensive ?
Find at least one 19" split rim for the spare tire maybe 2 ?    Almost impossible
Have to realign all 4 brake drums and should install new brake pads on the rear to match the front.  Yikes !
And I would have the wrong wheels for my car..., the good news is, they would be pristine.  Humm. !

or:

Fix the one 20" wheel.

I think I am going to switch gears and go down another road.  Sounds like fixing the one wheel and postponing all the other work is probably best at the moment.

Any thoughts,  Chet...

Does anyone know where I might find a 19" Split Rim that I can use for a spare tire ?  Having one custom made is very costly.

Did you use a rim spreader?  If you use a rim spreader it should seat the two ends and the lock will close with little or no force required.  Once the rim is on the wheel it can't open but it can if you horse it around off the wheel.  I'd drill and use a small split pin if you are concerned.  It doesn't need much to keep it closed.

The lock closes no problem it just doesn't stay closed. It pops right open.
I agree.  I will drill it for a small pin.    :). Many thanks

General Discussion / Split Rim Question

I removed one of the old Allstate tires from its split rim.  Quite a job.  The tire was petrified and I had to cut it with a jig saw in order to pry it off the split rim.  So much for complaining.  My problem is that the split rim opened fine but doesn't want to reclose.

I was thinking of drilling a hole to install a pin ??  Any tricks I am missing ?

I didn't want to hammer the post in fear that it might break the mounting rivet.

Any Suggestions.

The wheels are in great shape but the tires are shot. Bald to little thread.
Definitely will need new tires.  Too bad, although those tires are really big.

I have this recently respoked set of Plymouth 19" wheels (2 Front / 2 Rear ).  Excellent condition. I will however have to buy tires.
The good thing is that tire selection for the 19" wheels is a lot better than that of the 20" type.

The tires that are currently on these wheels are ( 6.00-19 6 Ply ) and look larger than my 20" wheels which are ( 4.75/5.00 4 Ply )
They look like truck tires.

Before I but tires/tubes etc does anyone know of any technical issue with swapping these wheels.  Once this is done If I ever wanted to have the originals redone the work time wouldn't effect moving the car around.  Also the wife likes the wood look better than the painted wheels.

Russ,

Now you are giving me reason to do some repairs.  The good news is with all the rain here the hub tightened up and hard to move.  Maybe we might try the raw linseed oil and see how much it tightens up. I don't want to wait a year.

The T bolts if the correct size may be a better match.

Try Langs Old Car Parts 1 800-872-7871.  I believe they are the same as the nuts for Model T hub bolts.

Thanks they certainly look the same in the pictures.  I found Stainless Steel carriage bolts that are the correct size also I was looking at Grade 5 Flanged Hex Nuts.  These are the same surface area and wouldn't need to be peened over to lock in place.

I will ask the wheelwright what he thinks when I see him.

If not the T bolts are another option if the correct size ?.
