General Discussion / Found original motor for 34
February 19, 2012, 02:48:01 PM
Hi all !
Was lucky to find an original motor that was taken out of a original DR-XX owner was going to restore then found it was easer to rod the car.
The following day removed sump cleaned and replaced fired up on ground , oil preasure was initially 15 psi on free spin on starter , fire up  smoke every where  , idle oil psi about 25 psi small rev to see presure rise to 60  then as motor warmed up after 20 min. With water flow to keep cool oil preasure went as low as 2 to 3 psi at idle and still puffing blue smoke  so have decided to fully rebuild this engine before going in car !
I was hoping like 30u engine started after 36 years still excellent except for minor oil leakes.

December 27, 2011, 04:40:39 AM
I hope I'm not stepping in unwanted territory !
As I have been looking for a 34 Plymouth, I just bought a 34 Dodge DR Sedan sight unseen and will be picking it up in  the next week or two as the car is in pieces which is an unfinished project ! So now will have another addition to our family, will post pics of it after it gets home. Have to travel approx.7 1/2 hrs to get here and can't wait !
Cheers Tony.

General Discussion / Interior light
November 17, 2011, 02:41:05 PM
I was lucky to find a new old stock interior light for 30u sedan fitted yesterday  it works now ! Had to replace main wire as it was below average and was worried that it would short out!
I know it's correct because shape and screw hole in roof woodwork matched perfectly !
Cheers Tony!

Have this issue idling , when cold engine idles smooth ,after 5 or so min. Engine begins to misfire ,I have since adjusted valves which did have intakes to tight , this made things better  as cold idle was rough, distributor was then rebuilt this improved idle even more still develops uneven running only at idle, next tried to tune Carter and found that air screw in or out makes no difference also with choke lever all the way down engine will not start. Have taken bowl of carby to check for blockage all seems ok ???

General Discussion / Steering wedge
September 12, 2011, 11:01:55 PM
Hi all !!
Now that i have new rear springs in my 30U , the rear end is up level and has a smoother ride  because its up off rear bump stops
New problem has emerged , steering is now way to light and I am thinking its because king pins are to forward.
When turning steering wheel does not want return on its own, I was told it could be it requires steering wedge between front spring and I beam axle. Any thoughts ?

General Discussion / Thinking of getting another car
August 27, 2011, 08:53:04 PM
Hi all !!
I don't know if I am crazy ! I must be because I am looking for a 34 Plymouth deluxe sedan ,it's just something about there lines that fascinate me. There are not to many in Australia and it's even harder to find one that's still in original condition!

Hi all !!
Last week end I have removed tailshaft to improve smoothness of car and I am making some progress , as I have discovered that holes that are drilled in the 3 finger yoke on front and rear are off centre by upto .045" so now of to engineering shop to correct it.
Its a long way out of dynamic balance for 2000 to 3000rpm

General Discussion / Small breather hole 30u engine
August 12, 2011, 03:18:50 AM
Hi all !
I have just finished repairing engine breather dump tube only to discover just above and to the rear of valve cover there is a tiny hole that looks to be purpose drilled ,it's approx 4mm,while engine is running there is a hint of engine blow-by coming from this tiny hole.
Would anyone know why it would be there?

General Discussion / Halogen globes in 30U
July 14, 2011, 05:36:15 AM
Finally got around to try out halogen globes in head lights ! They seem to be about 30 to 40% brighter so I am very happy with the result. The only downside is you need an alternator to keep up with extra load.
The globes I am using are 40/40 on 8volt system so far so good "

General Discussion / Taken 30U on first club run
May 29, 2011, 08:02:53 AM
30U went on first club run today ! In total drove 121 miles on bitumen and dirt roads through hills and country side , had no problems except leaking fuel cap and vibrating windows.
There were 12 vintage cars including mine, we had an absolute ball. Can't wait for next outing.

Has anyone taken out shaft from Delco 639a distributor ?
It's hard to tell if  coller on lower end of shaft is pressed on or is counter weight base has to be pressed off ? I need to get distributor re-hushed as there is to much play for points and is misfiring to much.

Took 30U sedan for a 20 minute return trip after work because just had to have a drive, about 5 minutes from home stopped at traffic lights brake pedal started sinking, I knew this is not good so drove rest of way trying not to use brakes, when I checked under car found that R/Rear copper brake pipe had split next to wheel cylinder, looks as I will have to replace all copper pipes as I can't trust it happening again

Last Thursday finally got 30U road registed and drove it 1 hour through peak hour traffic to Vintage Driver Club here in Melbourne , Half way there I had realized I left my mobile phone at home (doh) !
Luckily car did not give any trouble and I made it back.
As I have discovered it's a real task to drive these cars and after 1 hour driving is like driving a modern car for 3 hours.
My 30U defiantly need some serious balancing in engine and drive train area .
