Here is a quick sketch of a 29 distributor coil.  The ignition switch needs to be closed in order to provide power to the Primary and Secondary internal coils.  The so call Gas or Accessory post is connected to the closed power side of the coil's ignition switch.  So by providing power to the Gas lug you are in essence.., bypassing the ignition switch.
