Well Chet, your homemade base may not score high in form, but in function it gets a 10!  Nice work, as usual!    frank

General Discussion / Re: 30U suspension

Nice oval window.  Can't address suspension, but would suggest a shorter flex brake line to front wheel.  I believe the Q, U and 30U are the same.  Brake and Equipment warehouse, Minneapolis, made them for my 29U.

General Discussion / Re: My Motor Update

Chet,  sorry to hear the bad news, but sounds like the builder will get it right.  I have no pearls of wisdom for oil priming.  I don't recall following any special instructions when my engine was re-built,  maybe just dumb luck.  Good suggestions given here.  Good luck to you.

I keep telling Dave he should fire up the engine/tranny he got from hot rod Tommy to see how it runs.  Of course being younger and wiser, he wants a peek at the innards before doing so.

I've seen the base on ebay.  I'm sure it will do the trick and you'll have one less pot metal part to worry about.   frank

General Discussion / Re: Distributor Observation

The United Motors Service list i have shows most distributor components were available separately.

Also listed are Distributor, Complete - less Mounting Bracket for Q or U; 2 distinct part numbers.

Q distributor listed as 630-B, U as 635-T (and/or) 635-W.  These came with the Mounting Bracket???

I didn't see a 638C listed from Q through PF.

General Discussion / Re: Generator/Charging Question
September 09, 2018, 07:49:46 PM
I'm poor person to respond after my generator melt down.  Gen shop said it was a ground, re-winder said short?!

Before the troubles, mine hit upwards of +12 - 15a when hot.  This range also for borrowed gen and cut-out.  Usually cruise with lights on even during daytime.  Brings it down to +-1 - 2a, except at idle when it will go to -20 with lights on.  After traveling all those miles on just the battery, I'll be more concerned with overcharging than under.

Ted,  you noticed those non-stock items!  Since the battery is smaller than the opening, I made plywood shims, side and back, to keep the battery level and prevent it bouncing around.  The handles make it easier to remove the shims.

The roadster was missing parts of this "absorber" but thanks to Dave, it is complete.

Chet, check your local auto store for the flat cable.  One near me has various lengths.  Give them a ringy-dingy.

Here is my battery setup - like Dave's, as how I bought it in '65, but with new cables.  As barely visible, positive flat cable to the frame.  Negative cable to starter switch actually too long.  There is a flat cable like Chet has shown, although no pic at this time.

For what it's worth, on my sedan, the ground strap, a flat cable, is attached to the frame near the battery.  I believe this is the original setup.  I remember the negative cable is closer to 24" in length.  The roadster ground has a cable to the tranny.

Here is pic you can zoom in to see what it looks like.  Don Sommer makes a good reproduction.
