General Discussion / Cool Video showing our era cars !!!
December 16, 2013, 07:12:22 AM

This is worth a view, pay no attention to the pop up ad.  This is an official Dodge Brothers promotional film.  I grabbed the link from another forum.

Would you do this to your old car ?

http://www.youtube.com/embed/nq2jY1trxqg?rel=0

Just close the promo ad and enjoy the film.

In an effort to determine what hardware may be a good and inexpensive replacement for the original hardware on our early Plymouths could you please post pictures of what you have in your car today and whether you believe it to be original or not.

General Discussion / Paint do-over three years later: OT
November 02, 2013, 06:47:40 PM
My car was painted in October of 2010.  The paint came out great but as time went on I had problems with the primer pushing up dimples in the finish coat.  The painter really stood behind the job he did and I just received back the car today after 3 weeks in the shop.  The painter sanded the car back down to the metal, new primer, and multiple coats of finish paint.  We used a black primer to darken the paint color.  The car came out pretty close to perfect.

Painter did all this at NO CHARGE to me.  Only in rural America. !!!

It doesn't get much better then this:

General Discussion / Rainy Day Project
October 12, 2013, 03:58:28 PM
Well I decided to clean out the parts washer which I haven't used in a couple of years.  The parts washer was basically being used as a surface area to collect more useless garbage.   I found the pieces of two RT08 Carburetors which I picked up a couple of years ago and left them in the parts washer to soak.

I spent Saturday trying to get enough of parts from both to make one.  OK also found an old chrome oil cap.

Getting the pieces apart without damaging the pot metal and the venturi tube required many passes in the ultrasonic wash and then a little nurturing with penetrating oil.  Not to leave out a couple of years soaking in the parts washer.!!!

Some parts were sacrificed to retain others but I was very lucky and the end result produced enough good parts and a good casting to make one RT08 carb.  Whether it will work well or not remains to be seen.  I think I may have a good chance for success.  BTW  I do have the full factory Carter assembly & adjustment document and will post it in the tech area once I find it.

Does anybody know what paint was used on the carburetor?  I have basically seen the main casting painted black and maybe use that simulated carburetor finish paint on the butterfly top section.  I don't have an acceleration pump but these carbs work fine without the additional pump.  I know somebody manufactures the long one in Brass but here again very expensive.

General Discussion / Another question to ponder
October 09, 2013, 10:43:18 AM
I recently received an email from a gentleman in Germany who just purchased a 1929 Plymouth touring car.  He has a downdraft carburetor which appears to be sitting on the stock intake manifold which also appears to be installed upside down.   I never thought of doing this but can anyone confirm whether this is possible to do without modification ?  In a prior post Steve talked about a Stromberg Carb and the question came up from Glenn concerning a downdraft to updraft conversion.

If the intake manifold is reversible was this a common practice at the time the industry switched over to downdraft carbs ?

Just curious, Chet...

General Discussion / Another dumb question
October 08, 2013, 12:43:42 PM

This is probably a dumb question, but; did the 28/29 Plymouth have grease caps under the hubcaps for the front wheels ?

If no.., has anyone installed grease caps, there seems to be enough room ?

General Discussion / New Wood Wheel problem - ?
October 05, 2013, 04:52:53 PM
I tried installing the 19" Plymouth wood wheel on the front driver's side of my 29-U.  What appears to be happening is that the drum installs slightly further inboard which I believe is because the new wood spoke assembly may be just a hair larger then my old 20" wood wheels.  Looking at the pictures below it appears that the rubber dust seal is rubbing on the inside of the drum.  I guess I am not buying new tires just yet.

Any advise ???

The picture below shows how far the cylinder sticks out past the brake shoe.

You can see the scrap marks below.  I even changed the drum with my old car drum.

Really wanted to buy tires at the Hershey Show on Friday I would expect a good show price.

General Discussion / Question on front seats
September 25, 2013, 04:16:41 PM
I was reading a post on another site and this made me curious about the front seat in my 29 Plymouth.  It seems like it is mounted in place and my car didn't have any adjustment mechanism.   Of course it doesn't have original flooring either.  So the question on the table is how was the original front seat in the 28/29 & 30 mounted and were they adjustable to accommodate different size drivers  ???

General Discussion / Wheel size and model year.
September 01, 2013, 09:30:23 AM
I picked up four nice wood wheels from Don F in Massachusetts.  Unfortunately they are 19 in wheels and my 29U originally had 20 inch wheels.  Shame on me for not checking.

Here is my dilemma:

Should I invest more money in tires and tubes or sell the wheels at a loss for a quick sale?  I believe these wheels are correct for the 30U.  I don't blame Don, after all my 29 is registered as a 28U.  I guess the old saying penny wise pound foolish.  To date I have now spent more on wheels then the cost to re-spoke mine.

Am I being nuts about an inch.  The tires on these 19" wheels are 6.0 - 19 and are actually larger then my 4.75 - 20 original wheels.  It's only a 1/2 inch change in radius.  If I keep them I would also need a spare tire & rim although I could shoot craps with the spare.

I guess we are experiencing good weather all over and you guys are out driving your cars.  The temperature here in Virginia is just great for driving. 79-80 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny.  Of course I have vacation next week and it will probably rain all 7 days.

Stuff 4 Sale / Old Posts

To make this area more functional and current it would be good if once an item is either sold or acquired that the originator goes back in and deletes the post.  As a user you should have the ability to delete your own posts.  For this board (Stuff For Sale) I will start deleting posts that are more then 365 days old (1 Year) unless someone has an objection.

Dear All,

I posted in a thread on the P15D24 forum a message about my sister-in-law who has been recently diagnosed with brain, lung & spinal cancer.   Since then, I sent this email to her:

Posted Aug 1, 2011 7:22pm

Hi Conni,

Well I finally logged in and get to have a semiprivate talk with you. Most of the time you and Melissa talk and I am in the background going what?, when? And Melissa saying shush I'm on the phone but that seems to work most of the time. We are all very concerned about you as well as about another 100 antique car guys that you don't know but I talk with. So we all send our love, Melissa included. I am not going to tell you to get well because that's a given. I am going to be selfish and tell you that we love you very much and you must get better so that we can feel less sad. PS... The car guys want a picture of you in the Marilyn Monroe outfit for their garages. I won't tell Michael. I hope we all can get together again soon and set the stove on fire, that was a blast.

Chet...

After 3 weeks in the hospital she was out the next day after the email above and then sent me this picture.

I truly think after all the people sending prays and other thoughts which are less then uplifting, the thought that you car guys, who she doesn't know, brought her a feeling of well being.

Since then I have logged on to her care pages and have seen the same old Oh God , Oh God greetings from caring individuals that just seem to harp on the despair instead of the reason we live.

I sent this email today:

Hi Conni,

I am glad you are home and have your sister for some company. It's hard to believe that you are out of energy. You are the most energetic person I know. Maybe Michael is rubbing off on you. (Sorry Mike) Anyway.., the picture you sent is a classic. I am hoping to drive up to NY soon with the old Plymouth. I plan to be on the road by mid September and want to take you out for a drive. The car guys are anxious to see a photo opportunity with Mariylyn and the 1948 Plymouth.

Cheers, lv u,

Chet, Melissa, Kids, Dogs, & Boyfriends.

The point being is I think this distraction has given her the strength to face the things that are coming while keeping her focused on the fact that her life has meaning, friends, and a future.  I hope that the last 6 years I have worked on my car may finally have a greater purpose then chauffeuring me around and maybe giving a wonderful person the courage to live.

If you have a chance, please send her an email telling her you are waiting for a photo opportunity with my car and her dressed as Marilyn Monroe.  I think the outpouring of anonymous attention will give her the spirit to fight for her life.

If you have the time please email her at:

conni@takecenterstage.net

And tell her that you know me, where you are from, the type of car you have, and that you are waiting for a photo opportunity of Marilyn Monroe and Chet's 48 Plymouth.

Title your email Marilyn & Chet's 48 Plymouth

Maybe we can help save a life,

Thanks Chet...

Not getting that much news up here.  Everyone is occupied with Egypt, Libya, and of course the constant bickering between democrats & republicans.

I hope everyone is OK.., ?

General Discussion / The vacuum wiper motor.
February 07, 2011, 02:54:21 PM
I was told that the vacuum wiper motor on my car can not be rebuilt and that it was an early after market replacement for the original Trico.  Could anyone send me a picture of what the wiper assembly on the 1929, 4 door sedan look like or what yours looks like.  I was told that these are pretty rare in that they generally didn't survive being mounted on the exterior.  (Is it suppose to be mounted on the exterior ??)  Does anybody make an exterior mounted replacement for our cars or for the Fords of the era?
