This article was showing great prosperity.  With the US stock market crash in October of 1929 how affected was the Australian economy.  For the most part the effects of this event lasted through WW2 here in the states.  Walter P. did some aggressive empire building during the depression buying Dodge Brother's dealerships to have a point of sale for his new Plymouth line and expanding manufacturing capability.   By 1931 Chrysler Corp became the third largest manufacture of American cars thanks to the Plymouth line which was a big money maker after the Great Depression.

Thanks for the post.  Very interesting.

Here is a link to Tod's web which has Model Information for the 30 U and others:

Maybe someone with a 30 U might be able to answer you question about the vent.

Nice work Pat,  will look forward to seeing the pictures of the drums.  I think this is a common issue for our old cars and it sounds like you have come up with an alternative fix.

Tks for the post,  Chet..

Do you know of any spare parts, specifically the elbow fittings, for the top of the Kingston tank?

Thanks...

Ted

If you are looking for fittings to attach the gas line to the top of the tank,  I have found the type fittings used on our hydraulic lines in a store that deals with industrial hydraulic & pneumatic fittings.  The old fittings on our cars are still used on some industrial machines but in our modern world I believe these are used primarily on pneumatic systems.  A shop that has been in existence for many years can probably fix you up with suitable fittings or substitutes to switch over to a modern gas line fitting.   Of course the line going to the carburetor comes from the bottom of the tank.

PS, I wouldn't try removing the elbows because you may damage the tank.  My suggestion would be to try to find fittings or adaptors to make things work again. If that is your intention.

On my 29,  The straight shaft on the driver's side goes through the eyelet and is held in position by a bolt on the rear side of the pivot hinge.   When the lever is mover to the start position it moves the valve pivot on the engines water inlet assembly to restrict water flow and help the engine come up to run temperature.  The other side of the pivot shaft also increases the throttle.   The straight rod on the driver's side will slip in the eyelet of the hinged shaft to allow the driver to add more throttle using the foot peddle but the only way to lower the engine speed is to move the throttle lever back to the run position.

This is how my 29 works which may be different on the 28.  I hope this makes sense to you.   Chet...

The vacuum line should run from the oil pump to the vacuum tank.  The oil pump provides the correct amount of vacuum which is dependent on RPM and the design of the pump.  It is not suppose to be connected to the intake.   If you are taking vacuum from the intake that is incorrect and should be plugged especially with a none functional tank.

Ian,

Here are some pictures starting from the steering wheel side and working around to the carburetor.

Here are the last two.

Ian,

Dimensions are approximate.

General Discussion / Re: Distributor Play
June 20, 2014, 08:57:23 AM

You will always have some play in the rotor due to the backlash associated with the gear system.  When running there should be a consistent pressure on the gears which will place the rotor always in the same position within any given rotation.  I generally check for excessive play by just seeing how far I can turn the rotor left & right with the distributor stationary.  What I noticed with your video is that when turning clockwise the rotor moved clockwise and stopped but while you continued to turn clockwise it move another degree or two.  I thought this might be odd unless the distributor raised up while you were moving it.

These are just observations and I don't know if they have any significance.

Your post makes good sense to me.  I also agree that the quality of today's metal products far exceeds the quality and design specs of 85 years ago.

The missfire you speak of sounds very similare to what mine does. Like a random misfire. I have overhauled my hole ign system in search for the cause to no success.
I have now just lived with it as its only noticable at idle.

Ian

Ian you have described my engine exactly.  A random misfire which is only noticeable at idle.  If you watch the old movie channel and find an old movie which depicts cars from the teens and earlier, it was common place for them to backfire through the exhaust.  I believe our 29s are a great improvement over the prior 10 years of technology.  BTW  I also tune by ear but I don't think this random misfire is what Ted is experiencing.
