General Discussion / Re: Propeller shaft 1929
Last post by Russ T. Fender - February 19, 2024, 07:02:54 PM
I finally figured out how to see your movie and the runout is on the drive shaft from the universal joint discs.  You can play with how they are  bolted together and possibly minimize the runout but if the discs are worn where the bolts go though you will never get rid of that wobble.  That system actually works pretty well if everything is new and tight but the new discs are not as good as the original ones and there is no way to balance a set up like that.  They work well to reduce clutch chatter and provide smooth acceleration and the fact that they are not balanced was not much of an issue when speed limits were low but over 30 mph the vibration starts to get noticeable.  I still run them but rarely go much over 35.  My discs are new, I have the waffle washers and keep everything tight but still have some runout.  You get used to it eventually or you can switch to a modern u-joint set up.

There should be little or no runout from the output shaft but the brake drum may be where the runout is showing up as they sometimes get bent or the mounting holes get wallowed out so it is hard to mount it true.  If the yoke is running true I wouldn't worry about it.  The yoke should show no runout unless the arms are bent.  It's hard to diagnose since I can't open the movie.  Hope this helped some.

I am not very good with tech stuff but I can't open up your movie.  By the propeller shaft are you referring to the output shaft on the transmission with the emergency brake drum and U-joint yoke?

Hello
I started the motor and saw that the propeller shaft was wobbling a bit. See attached movie.
Is there some marking on the shaft and parts for centering the shaft I have missed?

If any of you folks frequent FB marketplace there is a 30U sedan with lots of parts listed. I dont know how to post a link to FB but type in "1930 Plymouth model 30-u $7,500" to the search in the Fresno area (Madera) and it will come up. Its been listed quite a while.

I may have some waffle washers that I scavenged from a field find.  They may not be perfect but should be usable.  How many do you need?

Kim that would be great!  I had been told that the seats were available in leather but have never seen an example and could not find any supporting documentation.  I doubt leather would have not been available in the rumble seat coupe if you could get it in the business coupe.  This is just what I have been looking for.
