Title: Some Help please:
Post by: chetbrz on April 28, 2020, 12:21:55 PM
Help,

I tried to install the hood on my car and I thought there was something that fit into these two holes.  I went back over my pictures and didn't see anything.  Also I don't remember taking anything off the hood but I could swear that there was something that fit into these holes to locate the rear portion of the hood ??

If so please post a picture so I know what I am looking for ??  If anyone has a spare.., I'm interested.

Chet...

Until someone posts a picture, here's a sketchy description.  This part mirrors the one on the radiator shell.  There is also a part that is under the cowl for support.  A two person job to install.  It is painted.  You probably have it in a box or bag, assembled with the screws and nuts.  frank

Looking back on some old pictures I don't think I have this piece.

Maybe the guy that had the running boards might have the piece ?  I have an extra radiator piece I may be able to fabricate it to work in the back.  ??

Hopefully someone will post a picture.   Thanks for the quick response.

Chet, I have to believe you had it.  What kept your hood in place at the cowl when you opened it?

If it screwed on I definitely never had it.  I looked at an old picture and didn't see anything there.  I guess just the weight of the hood and the tie downs held the hood in place.  With all four tie downs in place the hood stayed put.

Technically it didn't screw on, but was held in place on the cowl by 2 flat head screws with lock washers and nuts.  Think the nuts were the ever popular square variety.

This is what I have on my 30-U.  Not the best picture, but the body is out for paint so I cant take a better one.

Here is one on a 30U, hood is open, the center rod goes in the body of the bracket, you can see one of the flat head screws. Yours has to be very close or the same.

Excellent, I have my old radiator surround with the hood bracket parts intact.  I can easily create this part from your picture.  Unfortunately matching paint color might be a problem but at least I have an idea of what I need to do.  I could also leave it chrome.   :-\

Russ, you must have the new style 30U manufactured later in the year,  Water pump, mechanical fuel pump, etc.

Nope, mine is an early one with vacuum tank, no water pump and the rectangular rear window.  I found another picture that might show the part better

If I paint this up I think it should be better than nothing.  Rainy day project.
Thanks for the pictures they were a big help.  I never had this part but at least I can make a reasonable facsimile.

Looks pretty good ,Chet . Maybe a dent at back, so rod can not slip back and scratch cowl where seen .

Thanks Tom, I thought of that but I made it long enough to cover the hinge pin so it can't go through to the other side.  The front of the piece will hit the back of the hood's hinge.  I painted it and it looks pretty good.  With the hood closed all that is seen is the hinge part which should just look like the hood hinge.  I'll post a picture when I install the hood.

Like it Chet.  Fill or crimp the back so the rod hits it to keep this piece from rubbing on hood.  Paint on paint = no paint.  There should be a gap between this part and hood.

Hi Frank, thanks for the critique.  I fully understand what you and Tom are saying but I weighed this concern against the theoretical and the reality.   Up until now, I have driven this car for years without this part in place and the hood once secured with the hood latches doesn't move.  This has been my experience.    I believe the most benefit is when you have to open the hood to access the engine compartment.  Here this part plays an important role.  From an esthetic standpoint I think crimping the end properly would be hard to do with hand tools and the result would be a less than desirable look with iffy functionality.   The hood hinge has seen many years of abuse, rust, and at least 2 other repaints besides my recent redo.  I now believe my car may have been originally one color black.   The original windows show an over spray of blue covered by and over spray of red.  I'm pretty sure that originally the car wasn't painted in the factory with the windows in place.  So looking at the color coats like the rings of a tree stump, I'm seeing black, blue, red, and now blue again.  The first blue could have been a redo of the original color, impossible to tell from this point.

PS... New safety glass all around.

I appreciate all the comments and concerns it's always a great collaborative effort.
Sorry for rambling but it's raining here, so what else is there to do?

Well I put the hood on with the makeshift bracket end.  I think it will workout just fine.  The hood aligns up great.

Well that's the last of the exterior except for the roof.  I need to do the headliner first.  This way I have better access to attach headliner to bows.

Looking like a car again:

Hi Tom,

It would be great if there was a catalog like this for Plymouth.
