29U Interior Questions:
« on: April 20, 2020, 02:34:21 PM »
The only picture I have of an original 29U front interior is the drawing shown on page 230 of the Master Parts List Issued April 1, 1934.  See Below:

Question 1:

Item 19 - Foot rest.  Anyone have one of these and could supply a picture.  Also what type of material is it.  I assume metal.

From the picture I am assuming that there are finished kick panels under the dash on the driver's and passenger sides.  I will be reproducing these.

From what I can tell from other pictures there doesn't seem to be any wind lace around the door openings.  Can anyone confirm or deny this.

Map pouch is only on the passenger door.

Any comments would be appreciated,  Chet...

On my early 30-U kick board there was a remnant of an aluminum stem protruding from a collar that was screwed to the floorboard where the foot rest is located in the picture.  I assume it is the same as what is shown in your picture.  The top part was missing and the kick board was rotted so I tossed it.  Big mistake.   Since it is supposed to be a foot rest for the accelerator I assume it had some rubber over it.  I plan to make something up out of some aluminum stock.  I too would love to get the dimensions of that piece and it's location relative to the accelerator button but in the absence of that information I think the location can be fudged pretty well using the accelerator pedal and starter button as a reference.

The so called foot rest is an odd device, in that it sits in between the accelerator and the starter switch.  It is like a touch point that lets you know the gas is to the left of it and the starter is to the right of it.  Probably unnecessary but its good to know what it looks like just in case it shows up on eBay.

I have a few very early cars and they have some unusual accelerator set ups but they all have some form of foot rest.  I believe they were intended to help you keep your foot steady when driving over the unimproved roads of the day.  I have been looking for one for my Plymouth for over 50 years without any luck.  Right now I would settle for a good picture and some measurements so I can fabricate something.

That makes sense.  You rest your foot against it and it keeps you in the proper position to press the accelerator rather than the starter.   :)

Tom, what is the knob on the floor to the right of the starter pedal?

That is one of studs that holds matting in place

You can see the left corner one in Chet's factory interior print at top . Part number 33164 on trucks uses five four corner and top center on mine you see. A hole was punched in matting that fit snugly over stud . This made matting removable . My matting not original . I believe should be horizontal ribs as Russ T.'s

Tom,

If you look at the factory drawing the ribs run like yours.  Vertically.  From the seat to the toe board

Chet , you are correct . I check my book of info and pic shows same vertical ribs .
Question , I do not see it on your pic . But does any one have a close up and measurements of the drivers door lock latch , next to handle . It is just out of you pic s frame . It does show on mine ?
