General Discussion / Out for a drive
May 29, 2021, 11:44:08 AM
Went for a 26 mile drive today. It was good to get the 29 out for a drive.  Stopped to get gas at my regular ethanol free gas's station and they were out of gas. Oh well, it was good to get out anyway.

Merry Christmas!

Ok. I have seen them in Ford Model A Catalogs. I'll have to try one if those, with an extended hinge pin.

Congratulations Chet, well done!
I like your outside rear view mirrors. Where did you get them?

General Discussion / Re: Parts Check

I received two new front inner seals last week.  Interesting enough, I ordered a National number, but received these two CR18242, which I knew were correct.

CR (Chicago Rawhide) seals have been around for many years, and their numbers also tend to be used for cross referencing.

I have a CR seal catalog that shows sizes and have used it for years to research seals, although it does not list applications.

The second seal in the picture is an original metal and felt seal from my car I saved for reference and curiosity.

Regarding the bearings, in 2005 I checked every bearing and race. All had Timken numbers on them, which seems to be the common number still used for cross referencing roller bearings. Napa and many others use their own part numbers, but can be cross referenced with Timken numbers.

Regarding the front inner cone (bearing) the Timken number is 14132, but the Hollander Interchange Manuel also states, "Note: 14130 and 14131 fit"  that probably explains why some have these numbers on the inner bearings. (14130 was used on Fords until 47, and 14131 was used on Willys until 48, so there are probably more of these available).

Note, I have been told that "14132T has a tapered ID and will not fit".

Regarding the inner cup (race), only 14274 is listed.

I replaced a front inner cup (race) and it was not a tight fit. I used a bearing bond that could fill small gaps and that solved the problem. You can get bearing bond that will fill certain ranges of gaps or looseness, all very small.

That's what my Hollander book shows.

Things you are looking for. / Re: transmission seal

This is an old post - but the seals is National 450063.  These will also fit:  National 471820 or CR 15076  These are a little slimmer but will fit fine, just tap them in flush with the flange.

The front wheel seals are readily available.  CR 18242 or National 474350.  You can order them through Autozone or Napa.  I put some new CR 18242 on my front wheels recently.

Regarding the King Pins, I believe new king pin sets are still available for our cars. Any good general machine shop should be able to press them out and fit the new ones for you.  You can remove the axel and take it to the with the replacement kin pins.
As for the front wheel bearings, I had no problems finding replacement bearings and races back in 2015.  Back then I lived in Dothan, Alabama, a medium size town in the middle of a rather large rural area.  As a result, there was about every specialty shop you could imagine for repairing trucks and farm equipment.  At the time there were two shops that only handled bearings. I chuckle remembering when I went to one and brought in my original bearings  and races.  The fellow looked at the Timkin numbers and said, "no problem , we have plenty of these, they are the exact same ones used on many Chicken House fans."

General Discussion / Oil Indicator rod (dip stick)
November 21, 2020, 11:37:03 PM
It is curious that the low mark on the dip stick is at the practically empty point.  The manual stats, "The engine should never be operated when the oil is below the half full point of the indicator rod."  Seams like the "Low" should read "Empty"
:-\

When the oil is below the letter "F" it will take a quart to top it off.

No revenuers on this trip!  I know what you mean about the vacuum tank.  For years I have carried a small gas can with me in case I needed to refill the vacuum tank. I have rarely needed it.  But it is nice to have, just in case, like a spare tire.  Once time a while back the vacuum tank failed on me and I had to refill the vacuum tank several times to make it home.  The center wire managed to cut through the upper cork, which caused the tank to fail.  The fuel can pictured is really an old kerosene can.  Since it has a small spout, it works great for filling the vacuum tank.

That sounds really good, Chet.  I have always had to double clutch. Funny, the manual doesn't mention it, but with straight gears and no snycros, that is Usually the only way to shift smoothly. There is a good article on trannys in this months Skinned Knuckles.
