June 23, 2018, 11:28:08 PM
chet, thank you for the photo and fast reply.I  had already notched the new sill ( the brace extends down about an 1 1/4 and has holes for two screws to go into the sill).the old sill was rotted away in that area so I was not sure if someone had  modified the brace. Again thank you for the photo j.grare

General Discussion / 1929 model u B pillar
June 20, 2018, 11:41:05 AM
I am in the process of installing my new side sills. It looks like the (center) B pillar brackets have been altered in the past, I would think there would have just been a brecket at the bottom and a small t brace at the top. Does anyone have a picture of the correct  brackets mine are the width of the sills and go the full length of the b pillar (approximately. 43 inches) and form a *t* at the top where they attach to the roof framing.    thanks in advance for any help    j Grare

Chet, I am in the process of building new main side sills.I purchased tips on auto body woodwork by Don Marsh (ebay) he explains in great detail about the main sills and how to reproduce them.He says to laminate two pieces together to prevent warping. On a car with 1-7/8 sills he says to use a 1" and  3/4" piece and to use white oak as it contains paraffin wax which will repel water.  He also explains how to replace the door woodwork using t-nuts as our cars wood framing was assembled then the sheet metal was secured to the wood.I think hjs literature was listed under Hudson or Essex on ebay. Its only about 17 or 18 pages but worth every penny' good luck J Grare

General Discussion / 1929 u sedan crossmember
February 10, 2016, 11:14:58 AM
One more question (hopefully my last for a while) Is there a cross member (wooden) where the front floorboard meets the angled floorboard (cowl) I cannot tell if the sills were mortised out as there was not much left of the front half of the sills. There was just some 1 x 6 pine screwed to the brackets in the cowl and a piece of plywood  laying on the floor. I would think it wouldn't have to be very big, just enough to keep floor from sagging. Again any input is appreciated thank you      J.Grare

Is it possible there is only welting material at the mounting points? I see someone on ebay selling 1 1/2 x 2 x1/4" rubber pads with about a 1/2" hole in center. This seems to make sense as there was no residue other than rust on the underside of splash aprons or on the top of the frame rail. Also the sills would clear the rivet heads by about a 1/16" of an inch, and not collect any moisture as there would be a small gap under the sill.   Any input would be appreciated thank you    J.Grare

Sandblasted  and painted chassis. I will be making and  putting on new side sills in the near future. does anyone know the correct thickness body to frame welt. All I see for sale is 1/8"in. thick welting, the frame rivet heads are almost a 1/4"thick. Can I double it up or is there a supplier that has 1/4".I read somewhere conveyer belt material can be used. Another option would be to drill recesses for the rivet heads and use the 1/8"welting. one more question-Is there anything between the splash apron and the bottom of the sill?   I only want to do this once any help would be appreciated thank you  J.Grare

thank you for your reply. I set cowl on my plywood side sill template and positioned the  A pillar bracket with what is left of wood pillar inside of cowl.  Looks like the A pillar is only about 1/2 inch thick at bottom so it probably would not add much strength by mortising it, as the bracket is very heavy and will be screwed into 1 3/4 inches of oak. Can you tell if the B or C pillars are? It is hard to tell from what I have left of main sill.   thanks, J.Grare

I was looking for a nicer set of splash aprons {mine are not in the best shape but are repairable) and front leaf springs (my top leafs are cracked)I would prefer  originals over having new ones made. If you needed model A or T parts you would have hit the mother lode though!

thank you, just got home from Hershey I will use those measurements tomorrow they should get me very close ,with the wood framing I don't think that any two cars were exactly the same. I would think within an 1/8 of an inch should be good.    thanks again jg

frank p  thank you for your reply and photo. am I correct to assume that the 39 1/4 in. measurement was inside to inside of the left and right heavy  steel  A pillar support brackets that are screwed into main side sills   thanks again jg

making new sills for model u and need and need the correct width of the cowl at the floor .I measured before removal and seemed to have written down two measurements in notes ( 42 in. and 43 in.) also is the A pillar mortised into the sill or flush, sill is rotted away in that area, that is why I cant get a good measurement.       thanks JG

General Discussion / center pillar
April 19, 2015, 09:07:35 PM
Does anyone have a picture of where center pillar meets the sill. The outter 11/2" edge of the sill is rotted off,I can't tell if pillar went into sill or just butted against it.Also the pillar bracket looks like someone welded a piece on bottom so it extends into sill.Seems like that was done to stiffen up pillar as the sill was patched in with plywood.Should the bracket extend to the top of pillar (t -shaped)and tie into the roof structure? thanks for any input J grare
