What is so different about these bolts that make them so hard to find.

Form, Fit, Function, Thread size ?

Me Too !

We'll see, I would have liked to have the 29 ready to go but maybe next year.  My wife definitely will not want to drive that distance in the P15 but who knows what might happen.  I wouldn't show the 48 it has a 6vdc negative ground alternator and the engine is Chrysler blue.  I know wrong, wrong. but good driver.  If it wasn't for me the car would be in the crusher.

I did everything except the final paint.   Spent $$ on paint which over time blisters in spots ?

Long horror story...  Might have it repainted if the 29 comes out as expected.  Breaks my heart after 8 years of weekend work.

The Roof Progress

Due to the length of this task and the number of pictures I posted a link to the blow by blow description below:

Thanks for all the help with this, Chet...

With all this extra horse power I might have to go with dual carburetors.

Frank thanks for the photo of the light board.

Look'in good guys . Hay! Chet hope your gett'in rid of those Phillip Screws . Have some straights from my carriage building days if needed .

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the offer.  I purchased a lot of slotted wood and machine screws from https://www.boltdepot.com/ in the needed sizes.  Yes I do have to go around and replace a couple of those Philips screws.  They are actually a quarter inch to small.  At the time I was short the proper screws.  Now I just need to get around to some of the odds and ends.  Those being one of them.

Boy nothing get past you guys,  Chet...   :)

You guys are Good !!!

This is the dome light that came with my car.  Hopefully it is correct for the 29U

It's been sitting in an old tool box since I got the car.  Yes there is a metal tab on each door column but the one on the passenger door is broken.  I guess I will bend them back into the up direction.  I thought they were for a cross member.

Very Cool...

This afternoon while laying out the roof bows I realized that a bracket that is attached to the top of the center door post has nothing to attach to.  I originally thought that this attached to a cross bow but neither Dave's pictures or another picture I have show a cross bow in this area?

The question is where does it attach to or is it something that was added to support the roof that a previous owner installed ??  Any comments.  See pictures below:

The Top Center Door Pillar.

A picture of another 29 Sedan.  No cross bow in the area of the center door post ??
This is not Dave's car but the bows alien with the measurements Dave sent me.

Anyone have any wisdom to add,  Chet...

Chris.

Below is a link to a prior post with a lot of information concerning this topic.  Please review from the bottom up.

http://www.1948plymouth.info/28Q29U/index.php?topic=1120.msg7033#msg7033

John states:

"The Judging Guide for 28-39 states for "Internal Trim and Instruments" states, "Nickel-plated parts should be nickel" but does not state which parts those are.  No mention is made for the 28-29.  However, for 34, 36 and 37 the guide does state,"Interior bright work must be nickel plated."  I guess if the 1937 had nickel interior trim, the 28-29s would too".

I have been told by POC nickel plate inside chrome outside.

General Discussion / 29 Sedan Roof comments welcomed

Dave sent me some excellent pictures of his original roof along with measurements.  I created this diagram to be my work note reference for the positioning of the roof bows during the construction of the roof for my 29 sedan.  If anyone has any additional info I would greatly appreciate it.  I already have a template for the slight arc of the roof.

See diagram below and any comments welcomed.

Hopefully the weather warms up this week as we head toward the weekend.

Thanks, Chet...

Frank I'm not strict about anything the way I figure it is basically Mind over Matter.  "if you don't mind, it don't matter".

I will tell Joe you sent your kind regards.  Most of the people I have met in the Delaware Valley Region believe that its your car so do what makes you happy.  Which to me makes sense because that 's what a hobby is all about.  The only caveat is.., if you want it judged these are the guidelines.  Doesn't seem unreasonable.

Basically I am not trying to build a perfect repro but more like a family heirloom.  If both conditions get met then its serendipity.  (an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.)  I love that word, it describes my life.

Very perplexing issue our cars.

First in answer to Franks comments:

Frank, I agree with getting the roof installed along with any metal work that needs to be fabricated like the top metal door frame pieces.  My original pieces are mostly painted rust.  No.., the wheels are a project in themselves.  Just ask Ted. What a great job he did.  My wheels will just have to wait, right now I have bigger fish to fry.

As far as the ambiguity of our cars go I have to think Dave's car is my standard at this point.  I am a member of the Delaware Valley Region and one of the other members is a former POC president who owns an original 29 Plymouth 4 door sedan.  Really nice guy Joe Hernandez.  His car hasn't moved in awhile and he said that when the weather gets warmer we could dig it out of the garage so I can get my eyeballs on yet another example of a 29 Plymouth.

Below is a picture of my dash from a work effort I haven't posted yet.  In sanding and working on the dash I believe the Blue that is coming up is the same blue overspray I found on the remains of some original wood pieces.  Can I definitively say that someone else didn't paint this car Blue before it was repainted Red, maybe or maybe it is the original color.  Who can really say.  Below the blue was a very stubborn, porous & gummy black.  This is the same I found on the firewall.  Primer or topcoat ?

I think as time goes on being 100% correct is impossible but getting 85% right might be attainable.  The main and most important thing is to be 120% happy with what you have.  I will have to read over the POC judging guide. The jury is still out but if I am not convinced I will comply to general agreement unless something other than that makes me happy.

:), Chet...

Hi Frank et al,

We got back yesterday from our trip to Pittsburg to see Paul's Plating.  I am having the front and rear bumpers, radiator surround, and the headlight buckets re-chromed.  I am also having the headlight buckets re-engraved with the manufacturing marks.   Cost $5,650  This includes repairing one of the headlight rings which needs to be soldered.

To add to my financial stress I spoke with the painter today and his work seems to be the least expensive.   I am going to try Maaco.   Before I add anything more to the car I want to get the exterior painted.  Then I will be putting things back for the last time.  Paint only approximately $1,972.30 for two tone paint job. Plus any additional body work.

No pain no gain.  The good news is that the wife seems to be into the program.

PS...   Are we sure that the firewall and dash and door sills were Black and not the body color ?  Any & all Comments Please.

I want to go with my car's original color...  Marine Blue  So the next step is to prep the car for paint.

Cheers, Chet...

This is probably heresy to most but I have never changed brake fluid as a maintenance item.  Only if there was a problem with the brakes like a soft pedal and only after bleeding didn't fix it, but the latter has never happened.  Bleeding seems to always fix it.  I guess if you bleed the lines enough you have effectively replaced the fluid.

Don't know if it is right or wrong just me,  Chet..

Side Note:  With all of my old cars the brakes are the first thing I fix which usually involves replacing lines, cylinders, and rebuild the master.  So after all that new fluid is normal for me but not an ongoing maintenance item.
