Well, put the wraps on the Spark Control knob today.  They aren't perfect, but they will have to do for now.  Leave tomorrow for Detroit.

Hi folks,

Really need a 19" split rim for my trip.  I would really like to have a spare tire.  Mine collapsed this afternoon.

Thanks,
frank

I was able to resurrect an old one, but still looking for one.  7/21/18

General Discussion / Carb Drips Gas from Air Intake
June 05, 2018, 07:43:36 PM
Hi folks,

Anyone have this problem on a Carter RT-08 and solved it?  I'm stumped.  Leaks even with gas shut from vac tank.

Unfortunately Jon, Carb Shop, says this is what they do, but doesn't seem right.  Never a dull moment.

Thanks for any input,
frank

Hi everyone,

I asked previously if anyone has a picture of an original to see what it looks like.

No luck before, but have had several new members since.

Thanks,

Anyone remember which Plymouth Bulletin had a good article on removing the windshield?

General Discussion / For Amusement Only
December 12, 2016, 06:48:58 PM
I got my brake cylinders and hose back late last week.  I wanted to paint a bit before install.  Attached the rear hose and the front to frame fitting while paint was drying, 2 days.  Then installed the wheel cylinders and attempted the hoses in front - wrong size i.d. washers.  Back to B & E today.

It's been a bit chilly here and the garage has no heat except for the hot buttered rum in the under paid flunky doing this work.  Thought you might enjoy seeing what this Ply has replaced in the garage.  That convertible is longing for 70+ degrees.

General Discussion / FEDCO Plate Restore
August 26, 2016, 03:48:18 PM
I've been looking at this poor plate for the last 51 years and decided to take some action after looking at Dave's.  Unfortunately I don't have a before shot.  It's not perfect, but you be the judge.

I took black gloss enamel and sprayed into plastic container.  Using a small, fine brush, I attempted to paint the shallow areas and wiped the high areas with a paper towel.  It is encouraging how it allows the letters and numbers to be read, especially the "8."  The chrome/nickel isn't perfect, but at least most of it survived the elements.

(Chet, you really need to get that 48 some exercise and have some fun.  Pack a picnic basket and take your wife for a drive!)

General Discussion / Generator not generating
October 08, 2015, 12:52:14 PM
Last weekend my generator quit, according to dash ammeter.  After doing research, I decided it was the generator and not the relay (cut-out.)  Changed the relay to my used spare, still no charge.  Decided this was beyond my capabilities and tools.  No meter to read up 20a.  Took it to a shop on Tuesday and the generator ok, but relay bad.  He suggested replacing eltromagnet/points with a diode.  Done.  I'm now getting a constant 12a output, cold or hot.  Will see how this performs on the road.  In the process, I installed a new ground cable battery to frame.  Cleaned all terminals in charging system.  They were a little oxidized.  Yesterday, I cleaned all connections on the CLUM and brake switch.  I should probably do the same for all the lamp fixtures.  Too bad I can't get into the CLUM.  Now to get to my pesky carb, again.

General Discussion / Shifting & Other Issues
September 12, 2015, 12:14:21 PM
Hi folks,

My shift lever has been a problem for years and was getting steadily worse.  Time to get it fixed and it was for an ungodly sum of $500 plus and it still isn't quite right, but maybe it's me just getting accustomed to it.

You may recall the engine was missing earlier this summer when it got hot.  Don't know if I identified the root cause, but here is what I found/did.  Visually inspected spark at each plug.  Blue-white at 1, 2, 4; yellow white at 3.  Put in temp wire to 3, spark now looks like the others.

Noticed a huge amount of carbon spitting out of tailpipe.  Each plug was covered in carbon like it was flocked with the stuff!  Amazing the poor thing would start as easily as it did.  Cleaned plugs, checked the gap, .027" as in manual.  No more carbon out of tailpipe!  Checked plug this morning and it was a nice light brown as I think it should be.  Believe there is still a gremlin in the carb, but that will probably be a project for next summer.

This winter I plan on replacing ignition wiring.  These appear to be black rubber with AMERICAN STANDARD PRODUCTS stenciled in white.  Anyone know if these were original?  I have remnants of wire that is a lacquer coated dark green with a red cross tracer.  These are the only wiring not replaced with new since ownership.

I had my car for 50 years as of last month.  It's been fun and frustrating and will continue to be.  Wonder if it will get to the point of maintain instead of repair - probably not.  Suppose the next part to go will be the distributor base.  Should I buy one now??  lol

Hope everyone is having a good time driving about as the summer draws to an end, here anyway.  Recalling what happened to SteveG, please be careful with old and modern cars.

General Discussion / Left Front Brake Inop
May 19, 2015, 01:00:35 PM
Bleeding brakes after winter storage.  No fluid out of LF and shoes not getting to drum.  Removed wheel and tapped lightly on pistons and they moved inward.  Next step is to remove flex hose and inspect.  All hoses were replaced about 50 years ago, 1966.  Looks ok from outside, but perhaps collapsed inside?

Any ideas appreciated.  Wheel and master cylinders sleeved with stainless several years ago.  Still using paint eating DOT 3.

Thanks,
frank

Saw this on AACA.  Useful, informative and entertaining.  Too bad I didn't know about last winter.

General Discussion / Dave's Car at Show
August 19, 2014, 11:31:19 AM
Dave has a story to tell on getting his baby running (and stopping) to attend the Nowthen Threshing Show.  He had a goal and met it!  Not often you see two 29's at a show other than at a POC event.

General Discussion / Misc stuff this summer
July 04, 2014, 03:30:39 PM
Happy Independence Day!

Interesting to read what others have been doing this summer and winter

Been working on the Ply a bit this summer and not much driving.  Currently on jack stands.

The front seat upholstery was completely worn through on the drivers side.  In taking it out, I've found that wood needs to be replaced/repaired.  Could not loosen one machine screw in the seat support to the B pillar and had to drill it out.  First time in my life the bit was exactly centered so buying a tap was not necessary.  The entire assembly is back in, but more wood work remains.

Purchased a new front mat and cut to size.  Will put in when seat is done.

The pot metal inlet on the carb broke and had to make a new line.  Chose brass this time with a copper back-up, just in case.  Also bought new springs for the carb and the hand throttle.  Plan on painting them black.  Shiny new metal looks out of place.

Purchased 5 new Firestones and tubes.  Replaces the 49 year-old Sears Allstate tires.  Two are mounted on the rims, but need some outside paint before install.  Remaining 3 are waiting on the interior paint to dry.  Interesting how much rusty the rims were.  Left rear was completely rusted while right front and spare barely had any.  They were all sandblasted at the same time and he primered for me.  Wonder if LR wasn't blasted?  Thankful to have stumbled across directions for using the rim tool a while back.

Transmission and differential oil needed changing and decided to follow the Model A boys and use 600W oil.  Had been using 85w-140.

With all the room to get underneath, there are plenty of places that could use cosmetic attention.  I remember how nice it looked after cleaning and with a fresh coat of paint.  Many miles ago.  Will see how long my enthusiasm lasts for this activity.

Safe trips everyone!

General Discussion / Engine Stalls
May 05, 2014, 12:43:45 PM
Hope you guys can bail me out.  Here are symptoms:

Starts fine, but engine will die when gas applied.  Letting up immediately on throttle and the engine will resume normal idle.  After engine is warm, the hesitation is lessened, but engine will still quit.  To me, this describes a vacuum leak that partially seals as the engine temperature increases. It is possible to feather the throttle to get to high rpm.  At this stage, it doesn't stall with increased throttle.

With my high frequency hearing loss, I can't really hear much, but my wife said it sounds like "chirping."  (been told a functioning vacuum tank makes this sound)  Wasn't not stalling last year.  Have not taken off the carburetor this year.

All ideas appreciated.  Thanks, frank

General Discussion / Barn Find Redux
October 27, 2013, 09:16:06 AM
Hi folks,

You may remember my post of an original 29U here in MN.  The new owner contacted me last week and I weaseled a visit yesterday.  Originality is very impressive.  I encouraged the owner to join this forum and he said I may post a few pictures in the mean time.

Regarding that "home made trunk" - couldn't have been more wrong!!  I let the 2x4 support cloud my brain.

This trunk is a KARI-KEEN made in Sioux City, IA.  Note how it was painted and striped to match the car.

I think I'll have a Sunday drive.

General Discussion / Barn Find 29U in Minnesota
August 28, 2013, 06:09:03 PM
Hi all,

Wasting time yesterday morning, decided to google 1929U Plymouth for sale.  Lo and behold, a 4dr sedan is in Rogers, Minnesota, about 30 minute drive from the ranch in the cities.  Ellingson Classic Auto Sales.  (if I knew how to post a link, I would)

Drove to view to see if really was original, Yes it is, BUT many custom items also: Homemade trunk rack with wood 2x4 support, defrost fan clamped to the steering wheel, radio antenna mounted in center of cowl, just behind hood - quite a sight!

Very exciting to see what appears to be an original upholstered interior and top fabric!  My picture taking skill was terrible and many pics weren't recorded.  The light was very poor and flash needed for every pic.  (You know, blame the tools)

Asking price is $3950.  Doesn't run, needs distributor base at least. was told it is not frozen.  coil is not in dash, but appears there are 2 in the back seat.  Air in all 4 tires, spare rim in the back seat.  A relative early production model in May 1929,  RS710D.

I wanted to get the engine number, but did not have a flashlight.  If anyone has questions, try my best to answer.

Hi folks,

I'm looking for a picture of original interior or faithful reproduction that shows where the B pillar intersects the bottom section of the front seat.  I don't believe my setup is quite correct.

Also, if anyone knows what original material and color covered the interior of the firewall and the "kick panels" (side panel from front door to firewall), that info is appreciated as well.

Thanks for your assistance,
frank
