Title: Wood Wheel/Artillery Wheel Restoration
Post by: racertb on October 12, 2016, 10:02:08 PM
All:

I briefly mentioned in another thread that I was going to probably have my wood wheels redone (re-painted).  Well, I decided to have it done this week by a local restoration/hot rod shop here in Jacksonville, FL after the hurricane passed.  My wheels were in relatively good shape, but the 30 year old lacquer paint was looking bad.  I had to tighten the spokes on one of them first and I did not disassemble them.  I just wanted them stripped, spokes sanded, cleaned and painted and not over-restored.  Pin stripes will follow when done (like original).  Here are a few photos of the wheels so far...I hope to have them done by the end of the week so I can pinstripe (the stripe will be the darker green color on the car, the wheels and spokes the body color).

The flat green on the wheels near the end of these photos is an etching primer that is followed by a light gray primer.  I will post more photos when everything is done.

Here's a few photos from the process...wheels are currently getting pin-striped.  Hope to have them back next week so I can start putting everything back together.

Second that!  Did you notice Chrysler wasn't as fussy and had the brake drums installed and then painted the assembly?  At least that how mine were with the spoke pattern on the drums.

Good going, Ted

Thanks Chet and Frank.   When I dropped them off to be done, I asked them to not disassemble and I didn't want them over-restored.  However, the painter took them apart because he wanted to do a good job and do "everything right".  So, I didn't argue with him because they came out great.  I did have one re-done, however, which is the reason this is taking a little longer than expected.   The pin striper is doing the striping after hours sometime this week ( I hope).

Ted

Pinstripes were modeled after the wheel pic of the '29 Roadster below:

Stripes add a lot to the painted wheels.  You'll be crusin' shortly.

That was the goal Chet...lot's of examples out there.  Was lucky to get a close up off the black and white photo!  Hopefully I'll get things back together sometime this week in between Thanksgiving the the AACA show in Ormond Beach/Turkey Run in Daytona.  Have to get the '50 ready for that.

Nice looking Drums.  Did you reface them.  They look sleeved ?

Chet, the only thing I did to the drums was to hand sand the inside surface with 100 grit sand paper where the shoes come in contact.  The shop that painted the wheels installed new "jam" nuts inside the drums when he put the wheels back together...Ted.

Here is the finished product!  Took the car out today (in the 70's here in FL)...car ran great (knock on wood!) and the brakes are awesome!

That's great!  I was wondering if they could be powder coated.

Hey Ted,
When you had your rims powder coated  did you have to do anything special to prep them? Were the rims split open or together when you sent them to be powder coated?

John

Hi John:

When I took the rims over a few years ago (along with the bumper mounts and luggage racks), all they did was clean them (bead blast?) down to bare metal and kept them rims opened up so no over lapping.  Once cleaned up, they went on ahead and did the powder coating process of spraying and then baking.  I chose gloss black for everything.  I did give some thought to a silver/cadmium look with the rims but stuck with the black.  I got everything back a few days later.

Hope this helps...

Ted
