General Discussion / Re: 30-U interior

Well, I finally pulled off the three layers of seat covers that were installed on my seats over the years and what I found was a dark brown Bedford Cord material.  I have decided to keep it as it came from the factory and am searching for the closest thing I can find to match what I have.  What I have found however is that there definitely were options available for the interiors even if they are not very well documented.

General Discussion / Re: Propeller shaft 1929

I finally figured out how to see your movie and the runout is on the drive shaft from the universal joint discs.  You can play with how they are  bolted together and possibly minimize the runout but if the discs are worn where the bolts go though you will never get rid of that wobble.  That system actually works pretty well if everything is new and tight but the new discs are not as good as the original ones and there is no way to balance a set up like that.  They work well to reduce clutch chatter and provide smooth acceleration and the fact that they are not balanced was not much of an issue when speed limits were low but over 30 mph the vibration starts to get noticeable.  I still run them but rarely go much over 35.  My discs are new, I have the waffle washers and keep everything tight but still have some runout.  You get used to it eventually or you can switch to a modern u-joint set up.

There should be little or no runout from the output shaft but the brake drum may be where the runout is showing up as they sometimes get bent or the mounting holes get wallowed out so it is hard to mount it true.  If the yoke is running true I wouldn't worry about it.  The yoke should show no runout unless the arms are bent.  It's hard to diagnose since I can't open the movie.  Hope this helped some.

I am not very good with tech stuff but I can't open up your movie.  By the propeller shaft are you referring to the output shaft on the transmission with the emergency brake drum and U-joint yoke?

I may have some waffle washers that I scavenged from a field find.  They may not be perfect but should be usable.  How many do you need?

Kim that would be great!  I had been told that the seats were available in leather but have never seen an example and could not find any supporting documentation.  I doubt leather would have not been available in the rumble seat coupe if you could get it in the business coupe.  This is just what I have been looking for.

Stuff 4 Sale / 21" tires

I have 2 Allstate Safety Tread 4.50 X 21 tires if anyone needs them.  They are old but the tread is good and they'd make decent spares. Yours for the cost of shipping.

Chet I spoke with Ted but he has a roadster (lucky guy) so no help there.  Still looking for pictures of an original interior!

Well, no progress on the interior question. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any information on the interiors of the early Plymouths.  So, I will move to plan B and ask if anyone has any pictures of the original interiors of the early Plymouths and in particular the 30-U coupe.  Understandably,  most cars have had their interiors redone and looking at the pictures of those cars I have doesn't help much as people seem to have done whatever worked for them as opposed to what was original.  I may wind up doing that too but I'd like to get it right if possible. Thanks.

Thanks.  Bob McMulkin, who was an old friend of mine,  was the technical advisor for those cars but he unfortunately passed away a few years ago. I don't know who, if anyone, took over for him.  He did not have the answer and doubted that anyone would be able to say one way or the other.
I thought I would give it one last try before I bit the bullet and went with a cloth interior.  My original interior is hidden under seat covers installed by the original owner after it wore out.  I guess I will just try to get as close a match as I can and leave it at that!

General Discussion / 30-U interior
January 14, 2024, 05:35:10 PM
I am finally at the point in my restoration where I need to make some decisions about finishing the interior.  My car is a rumble seat coupe and the rumble seat upholstery is original and in good condition so my question is limited to the interior.  Many years ago I was told by some club members, who have long since passed, that the seats could have been ordered in leather as an option.  This was based on the fact that the roadsters came that way.  That would be my preference but I cannot find any documentation to support that so I am wondering if anyone has any information about that, one way or the other.  I am a bit of a purest (within reason) and want things to be correct so if I can't document the use of leather as an option I will be looking for suggestion on alternatives.  Thanks!

Yes, they did the rods and mains. The crank was good and just needed polishing. Took almost a year to get it all done.  It turned out to be the last job the machine shop did before the elderly owner retired and closed shop.  He had done a few other engines for me for my Model T's over the years and was proficient at pouring bearings.

About 5 years ago I did the engine in my 30-U.  I did it all, rod and main bearings, rings, pistons, valves, valve seats etc.  Block was bored and sleeved back to original specks and decked and the head milled.  The bill was a tad over 6K.  Don't tell your wife!

General Discussion / Re: 30 U radiator cap on E-bay
December 31, 2023, 09:06:08 AM
I guess if you need one the price is not too bad but it will need to be replated and the internal piece that locks it on the radiator is toast.  I am also not sure that is  correct for a 30-U either.  I never had the original cap for mine as the original owner had a Motometer on the car. I have that cap but period pictures I have seen show a different cap.  Perhaps they changed the cap style mid year like so many other things.  If anyone knows the answer please share it!
