General Discussion / Re: 30U suspension
November 18, 2018, 08:16:25 PM
I have an early 30-U that has the dampening springs.  It had no shocks but I eventually added shocks and retained the dampening springs.  The early 30-U seems to retain some U features like the dampening springs, vacuum tank and thermosyphon cooling.   In addition to the shocks, the shock linkage and the axle mounting plates there are also re enforcing plates that go on the opposite side of the frame where the mounting bolts for the shocks are located.  I may have some extra parts in my storage unit if you need them.

What about throw out bearings?  They were in short supply 40 years ago.  Is there a modern eqivalent available?

I repaired a similar pin hole with JB weld but eventually opened it up a bit and brazed it.  The JB weld repair lasted several years, but brazing will last forever.

Any water soluable oil will work.  There used to be several sources that were labeled as water pump lube but they are getting hard to find.  I usually get mine at NAPA And just ask for water pump lube as the brand they carry seems to change from time to time.  Last time I bought it I got a Prestone brand but they have a similar product at Walmart occaisionally and itmis much cheaper.

Antifreeze never goes bad but it looses the anticorrosion properties so you no longer get the benefit of that function of antifreeze.  I add anticorrosion supplement to my antifreeze annually and have not changed the antifreeze in my car since 1962.  I do add 50/50 mix to top off the radiator from time to time but since my car runs very cool it rarely needs any added.

General Discussion / Re: Drag link ball

That is the one.  I will try Then and Now.  I considered having it welded up and machined down but am not keen on that given the potentially devastating consequences of a failure at that point.

The drag link ball I need is at the other end of the drag link. It looks like it is a 15/16" ball on a tapered shaft with a threaded end that attaches to the steering knuckle arm.

Is there a source for the drag link ball on the 30-U?  I believe it is the same for the Q through PD. Thanks

Carson, where was it leaking?  Is it between the two sections or somewhere else?

It is threaded on but I have never been able to get it off and am afraid to use heat as there is a seat between it and the main body that has a rubber component that is not part of any rebuild kit I have ever seen.  Hope someone has the answer.

Chet I have been searching for a replacement for several months so I am not surprised.  It really is a problem as it is not good practice to use old stretched bolts.  I had less trouble finding rod bolts for my 1908 Locomobile!  I will keep looking too and let you know if I get anywhere.  This is obviously going to be an issue going forward as more and more tired engines need rebuilding. I believe the same bolt was used on the PA and PB rods so locating a replacement will help them also. Thanks again for the help.

General Discussion / Re: Dampening springs
March 19, 2018, 09:08:48 AM
Unless I am told it is a definite no, no I plan to use them along with the shocks.  If the ride is too stiff I can always remove them.  I actually made up one of the front dampening springs myself that was missing.  I used an old spring leaf and did a lot of grinding trying not to get things too hot.  Twenty ton press was enough to form the bends.  I used the same outfit you did for a replacement spring and they told me the same thing about not being able to make the dampening springs.  They do a great job and the turn around time is fantastic.

General Discussion / Dampening springs

My 30-U has dampening springs and no shocks.  I now have a set of shocks and the mounting hardware for the car.  Should I remove the dampening springs when I install the shocks or did they come with them even if the car was originally equipped with shocks.  I have always assumed the dampening shocks took the place of the shocks that were an option.
