General Discussion / 30-U rod bolts
March 16, 2018, 06:32:44 PM
Looking for a source for rod bolts for my 30-U as mine are stretched beyond use.  There must be something close that is being used on recent rebuilds but I have not been able to find what it is. Thanks.

Rich, put me down for two cans and tops.  Thanks for taking this on for us.

General Discussion / Re: 30-U shock absorbers

Those pictures are just what I needed.  I tried Egge for the rod bolts but they do not have them, just the pistons, rings and wrist pins.  Thanks all for the help.

General Discussion / 30-U shock absorbers
March 13, 2018, 02:05:52 PM
Could someone post a picture of how the front and rear shocks are mounted on a 30-U.  I recently acquired a set and am unsure how they are installed. Also, I am still looking for a source of rod bolts for my car as mine are severely stretched.  Thanks.

I'd take one too.

General Discussion / Re: Radiator Emblem

No need to bake it but it may not be as durable as true powder coating.  The repair I made to a wire wheel on my 30-U is a perfect match.  I was afraid to have wheels powder coated because of the repair issue if they get chipped.  The owner of the powder coating company is the one who told me how to make a repair using the powder and acetone.  I will never paint a wire wheel again!

I have used powder that I got from a powder coater.  I mixed the powder with acetone to make a paste that is just thin enough to spread out into the chip.  It works well on pwder coated rims that get chipped so I expect it would work for your badge.  I had the benefit of having the same color powder as was used on the part being repaired so the match was perfect.  Your problem will be getting the right color to match your badge.

General Discussion / 30-U Firewall
October 11, 2017, 03:58:51 PM
I am looking for pictures of a correct early 30-U firewall so I can close up any extra holes in the firewall and mount the correct Kingston vacuum tank in place of the Stewart vacuum tank that was substituted for it by the previous owner.  Thanks

I could sure use a kingston vacuum tank

General Discussion / Re: Wire wheel color
April 07, 2016, 07:55:13 PM
I checked that source out and was able to get body colors but nothing about the color of the wire wheels.  I do know that the artillery wheels were the same color as the body but may also have been available in natural wood.  The wheels I have were yellow and have never been repainted so I am pretty sure that yellow wheels were available with a green body.  The 30-U roadster I had many years ago had red wire wheels with a tan body but I am not sure they were original to the car.

General Discussion / Wire wheel color

Does anyone have the paint codes for the wire wheels on a 30-U.  I am wondering what colors were offered and if there were limited options  based on body color?  I am thinking of painting the body Crown Maroon and wonder what color options were available for the wire wheels.  The car was originally a dark green with yellow wire wheels.

General Discussion / Timing question.
April 02, 2016, 08:26:06 PM
When I removed the timing cover on my 30-U engine I found that at some point in its life the cam shaft gear was installed one tooth off.  I drove the car for more than 10 years with it that way.  My question is has anyone else encountered this.  I am wondering if it was done on purpose to get more advanced timing. I also found that two of my pistons were marked Chalmers Motor Company while the other two had the Chrysler logo on them.  I believe Chalmers was acquired by Chrysler after Chalmers merged with Maxwell and Chrysler rebadged the Maxwell line as Plymouth so I am assuming they were still using old stock as late as May 1930 when my car was built.  The pistons are standard size but it is possible that they were replaced at some point during the 42 years it was in regular service.  Does anyone know if they were using Chalmers piston in Plymouths from the factory as late as 1930.

General Discussion / Re: Another diassembly question
March 25, 2016, 11:02:45 AM
Thanks Gary.  I had the nut off but did not see a slot for the key so I did not want to put a puller on it without confirming that it was a press fit.  Oddly, the threads on the crank shaft look like they run right into the pulley

Is the lower fan belt pulley on a 30-U threaded on to the crankshaft?

General Discussion / Re: Disassembly question

Thanks Frank I think the cars are very similar if not identical in that area.  After I posted the question I decided to support  the back of the block, unbolt the block from the bell housing and then I unbolted the bell housing from the frame and lifted it up and over the flywheel.  Either way is a bit of a chore.  Thoughout the process I kept thinking that replacing the ring gear on one of these cars was no picnic.
