General Discussion / Re: copper tubing
September 17, 2009, 08:05:29 PM
Hi Rusty.
Your brake lines were originally copper as well.  Mine still are.  I did replace the fuel line for that reason with another copper line.  My car is a 30U coupe, one of the brake lines had been ruptured and repaired with solder when I got it.  Even tho it was working well I changed it to.  Jim

General Discussion / Re: This is a REAL problem...

Chet I swapped engines in my 30U this summer.  The new engine (which I have had for several years) had a different bell housing.  The bell housing is longer and the transmission bolt size is different.  No big deal, the original bell housing worked but it was a little bit of a problem cuz I didn't notice until the front motor mount didn't line up to the bolt holes.

Atwater Kent Mfg. Co., phone 506-792-9500, rebuilt my coil and switch.  The coil was bad because I shorted the wire from  the coil to the points.  The switch mechanism was just wore out.

Hppy roads, Jim

I had my ignition switch and coil rebuilt by I don't remember who but can find out if you like.  Seems to me the whole thing is one assembly.  I do have a spare decal for the face plate for my 30U which you are welcome to.

General Discussion / Re: rod bearing
February 02, 2009, 12:36:23 PM
I found a fellow close by who does babbitt bearings, thats the good news.  Took off the head to remove piston and rod and found grooves in the # one cylinder wall which were not there six months ago, bad news.  I was given a spare engine (low milage) some time ago so I'm thinking of an engine swap but have not made up my mind.  I value all opinions.  thanks, jim

General Discussion / rod bearing
January 23, 2009, 02:59:54 PM
We have had summer like weather for the last two weeks so I took my trusty 30U for a few spins.  On the last trip to the store she developed a terrible knock when starting And, oil pressure took a big drop at idle.  One rod bearing is missing about one inch of shoulder on the bottom half.  My guess is this allows the oil to escape and causes a knock untill pressure returns.  It looks new and shows very little if any wear.  The question is should just one babbitt rod bearing be replaced and do you know someone that might pour or sell one.   Thanks, Jim

Thanks, Chet and doUg.    What about parts?  I have some almost round nuts (for holding the tire to the wheel) I'd like to replace and I need a carrage bolt.  Jim

Has anyone replaced their spokes?  If so, do you have any recommendations or other comments?
My front wheels have a lot of movement at the spokes.  thanks, jim

I bought a 30U last year in running condition thru ebay.  It had several problems and I'm sure it must have sat for years. It has taken a year because I only work on it when I feel like it.  It is not a beauty but only car people seem to see the dings and from 25 feet looks fine.   It starts easily every time.  And idles at 300rpm.  Is completely stock.  I'm sure I paid too much but will not sell it for twice that.  Jim

Thanks Chet.  The zerk fittings are fine I'll look for a tie rod end before I start tearing into it.
