General Discussion / Plymouth Tool Kit
October 26, 2014, 05:11:10 PM
Does anyone have any photos of the correct tool kit, or even photos of any pieces from it, for 1930?  I'm guessing 1928-1932 may be about the same, however, so that would work, too.  Thanks again for any assistance.

General Discussion / Re: 30U Engine problem

Well, started out with the owner's manual's suggestions and checked all wires, coil, and ground connections and they seemed ok.  Then, took out all plugs, thoroughly cleaned them in gasoline and regapped the plugs.  Took it for a test drive around the block after getting to operating temperature.  Car ran fine, which is great news.  Must have just been the plugs, but it sure let out a big cloud of smoke and ran very rough last weekend, so I thought it was a larger issue.  I'll take for it a little longer drive this afternoon to monitor it and make sure nothing else pops up.

Thank you again for all your replies and assitance.  It's folks like you that keep us encouraged to keep our 85 year-old cars on the road.

Not running the original coil.  I'll add all of these suggestions to my list of tests, plus I'll run the tests suggested in the owner's manual.  Thanks again.

Doug, that goes along with the theory that my car (a 30U) did not have the dash light switch installed, but was hardwired into the headlight switch, as I've now heard from '28 and '29 owners that they have it, and I saw the '31 owner at Hershey who had it, but no one has chimed in with a 30U roadster/convertible yet.

As always, thank you for the information.

Thanks.  I'll do a test on it this weekend and see if I can get to the bottom of it.

General Discussion / 30U Engine problem
October 19, 2014, 04:53:23 PM
Was driving my 30U today and had a big problem.  Car was running fine, but when I pulled away from a stop and accelerated fairly hard to get up to speed, a saw a puff of grey smoke from the back and started immediately losing power when accelerating.  It felt like the car was missing fairly badly upon acceleration, but was fine when at idle or off the gas. I'm guessing I may have a valve problem.  Plugs and wires are showing power when hooked up to a multi-meter.  Any other ideas before I open this thing up to figure out what's wrong?  Thanks again for any suggestions.

Thanks for the reply.  I see the switch on the '29 wiring diagram (labelled #26 on the wiring diagram and called "instrument lamp switch)" so this makes sense for '29.  Still not 100% sure about the dash lamp switch for 30U's, but now pretty sure that all roadsters had the wiper switch on the wiper motor itself.

Anyone have a '30U roadster with the "instrument lamp switch?"

Thanks again.

Gary & Doug,
I think this answers all my questions, thank you kindly for the answers.  So, it looks like ALL 30Us have the 3 holes for the dash light/dome light switch, but only cars with a dome light got it installed (unless we hear otherwise).  However, this doesn't explain the '31 Roadster I saw at Hershey last week that had the switch the controlled the dash lights (the owner demonstrated it for me). I guess '31 may have been different.

It also looks like open cars did not have the wiper switch on the dash but closed cars did.  This makes the most sense to me.

Thank you for the part numbers and I'll be searching for that wiper motor for the open cars.

Regards,
Chris

Doug,
Thanks again for your reply.  I'm starting to assume that my car never had either the dash light switch or the wiper motor switch, originally.  There is no hole whatsoever for a wiper switch in my car, and there is no evidence of a dash light switch being in my car, considering the current wiring siuation and the lack of this switch being mentioned in the wiring diagram.  I think I'll just leave my car as is unless I get additional documentation or new evidence.  Thank you once again, this is very helpful.

Thank you to Doug, who already gave me a photo and an answer to my question, but I still have some follow-on questions.  I have a 30U Sport Roadster.

I'm doing more research on the 2 small holes and 1 slightly larger hole I have under the lower left of my dash board (see 1st photo).  These holes fit for a dash gauge light switch perfectly.  I've seen a '31 Roadster with this light switch and a junk dash board at Hershey from a '29 Coupe with this light switch in the same position as well (see 2nd and 3rd photos).  I purchased this junk switch and it does fit perfectly in my car.  My car currently has the dash gauge lights wired into the headlight switch, however, and I see no reference to this switch in the 1930 First Edition owner's manual.  I do not have access to a later edition.  I do see this switch in the 5th edition 1929 owner's manual, though.

On the other hand, I've now had two other knowledgable people tell me that these holes would be for the vacuum wiper off/on switch.  This is the switch in the photo that Doug gave me in the "Items wanted" section, but it does not appear to fit the holes I have in my dash, as the switch above appears to just screw into one hole and does not have the two accompanying screw holes for which to secure it.  In fact, I found what was advertised as a '31 Dodge (I believe), at Hershey that has both switches (4th photo) which confuses me even more.

So, my question to anyone who may have an answer is:

1) What should go in the 3 holes in the first photo (my 30U roadster).  The answer could be "nothing," the "dash light switch," or the "vacuum switch."  If it is the vacuum wiper switch, why do I have 3 holes available, but the vacuum wiper switch appears to only need 1 (see 4th photo)?  Is it possible that on a late-production 30U Roadster, it could be that there was no separate vacuum wiper switch and it was simply on the wiper motor itself, AND the dash board light switch was not offered and the wiring was simply attached to the headlight switch?

Thank you for any ideas on this, as I'm quite confused at this point.  Sorry for the lengthy posting.

General Discussion / Dash Light Switch Question
October 14, 2014, 05:12:07 PM
All,
I have a 1930 30U Sport Roadster.  When I bought the car 3 years ago, it had one larger hole and two smaller holes on the bottom lower left underneath of the dash board.  I finally found out that these holes were for the dash board light swtich from a gentleman at Hershey, as I had previously thought they were for the wiper switch.  Anyway, I wanted to ask, did all 1930  30U's have this switch, or only late model year cars?  I looked at the wiring diagram in the First Edition Onwer's Manual and it did not show this switch at all.  My car was built in April, 1931, one of the later ones.

Can anyone confirm/deny if my car would have had this switch?  Does anyone have a later version of the 30U wiring diagram to show how it was wired and the color of the wires?  My car is currently wired with dash lights via the headlight switch.  Thanks for any insight.

Thanks again for your reply.  Haven't been able to find any repros of these, but good to know. Jim Benjaminson doesnt have my size.  Yes, I'll be switching from white walls to blackwalls, so probably going with whatever the closest choice is from Universal Vintage Tire Co.

General Discussion / Re: 30U (Earlier or later) Tire Pump

Thank you for the help, but trying to find what the original looks like.  According to the 1930 owners manual, a tire pump came with the tool kit.  Regards, Chris

General Discussion / 30U (Earlier or later) Tire Pump
September 01, 2014, 07:23:21 PM
Hello,
Does anyone have an original tire pump from a 30U (or maybe a Q, U, or PA)?  If so, would they be willing to share a photo or two of it with me?  I'm looking for one for my 30U, but I don't know what it looks like.  Thanks for any help, as usual.
