General Discussion / Brake master
January 23, 2019, 04:40:35 AM
Hey guys

I have decided to put a rebuild kit through my master. As it leaks out dust boot.
Wondering if anyone had some light to where these components go

1: wavy thin shim washer
2: thick rubber round gasket. ( same size of bore).

The owners manual doesn't show these parts.

General Discussion / Igniton switch
January 17, 2019, 04:26:47 AM
Hi All

Some of you may have seen my add looking for an ignition coil and switch. Well I decided to have a go at making a look alike. I had a face plate but the coil had been chopped of the back. Then an aftermarket switch was fitted. So with these items I set the task to make it all flush then remark the label.
made a bush the sits nicely within the 3 tabs on the backside of the faceplate. The switch just screws in tight. Then once the switch is in correct orientation the bush was just welded to the faceplate.
Next was the decal label. Using Microsoft word I drew up a few simple shapes and made them to size. The original was white with black writing. But black with white writing matched amp/oil pressure gauge. I then added the text. Test printed on normal paper for fitment. Then printed it out on photo paper.

Very happy with the result. Now to get a proper steel etched or printed version made.

General Discussion / Hello again
November 21, 2018, 04:54:13 AM
Hi all

Been a long time since I have posted.
The tourer has been undergoing a slight birthday. Stripped back to chassis painted and built back up.
I have just completed the body and doors. 2 tone cream and brown, like it was. While I had the dash out I was able to fill all un wanted holes. now it looks so much cleaner. Better still, I went to a local swap meet and I was able to pick up a reconditioned head light switch. Could not believe it. The car has been missing this for ages.
Hoping to have the car back on the road by end of February. To enjoy whats left of our summer (AUS). Then come winter the task of engine rebuild will commence.

Still got a few problems I need to fix before even road worthy. Steering drag link has worn very thin. So is going to need rebuilding. not sure how to tackle that yet.
Tailshaft. one fitted at the moment is not the greatest. looks like a back yard farm yard job.

Does anyone know of anyone who sells repo bonnet latches and rubbers for taillight brackets.

Ill post some pics, but first need to upload to computer.

General Discussion / brake lines
October 03, 2016, 06:32:06 AM
Hi all.

Just wondering if any one has used a double flare with success.
Reason I am asking I am about to replace all lines and I believe it is illegal to use single flare on brake lines here in aus.
The originals were single flare.

Hey everyone. Hope all is well.
Just thought id share what has happened/happening to my tourer. So it all started with getting some rust repaired in the front fenders. which then led to replacing both valance panels. Then discovering more severe rust in the cowl lower sections to then finding some wet rot in the timber main rails.
The big decision was made to completely strip the car back to the chassis and begin a 'ground up rest'. Big task but am lucky I had 3 years of successful enjoyment of the car.
So at the moment the chassis has been wire brushed, sandblasted and primed. Ready for top coat.
The timber frame will be stripped and pieces that are damaged will be re produced (in theory). The rust in cowl will be cut out and new rust repair panels welded in.
I am not going for show room finish but more a good clean drivers car. A car set out for weekend adventures not just on bitumen.

Now the questions I have are:
Does anyone know what the S and I in circles mean on the chassis. They are stamped in both rails and cross beams.
I also have this number 4274 stamped on both rails at rear near fuel tank. Any ideas as to what these might mean.

General Discussion / model Q manufacturer date
February 28, 2015, 05:09:34 AM
Hi all
So I would like to know a closer date that my tourer was manufactured. Unfortunately I dont have the fedco badge. So am calling out to other Q owners who know there date and engine number. Mine is Q186007. I know this is only going to date the engine and would only apply if they put each engine in sequence and if it is the original.
But would still give me a month to go by.

General Discussion / ATT: RH drive plys owners
June 20, 2014, 07:46:40 AM
Hi there
Could someone please post a photo of the linkage that goes between steering box and carb. The one that allows you to increase idle via steering wheel lever.
And if possible some measurements as well.

Thanks ian

General Discussion / Exhaust manifold leak
June 12, 2014, 06:35:46 AM
Hi guys.
So for some time i have suffered from the exhaust manifold gasket blowing itself to pieces.
After the 4 gasket i decided to investigate the problem.
I found that when the exhaust and intake manifold were together the was a 2-3mm variation in the mounting face.
So i took the manifolds to several machine shops, all quotes me between $350-400.
I was not prepared to pay that so i began setting out a way to do it myself.
First step was to helicoil the exhaust manifold so i could clamp both together. A 10mm x 1.25 helicoil kit fits perfectly into the factory holes.
I then clamped the exhaust manifold port side down and faced it clean taking 20thou off to straighten.
I then used the carby flange and mounted the intake manifold to a 6mm thick angle piece.
You can see this step in the photo.
I made sure it was all level and square with the mills bed
Using a fly cutter i cleaned up the surface. Again taking 20thou off.
I then placed a gasket in the middle and bolted the exhaust manifold onto the inlet.
Then again faced off all the port in line taking 3mm off inlet port and about 30thou of exhaust ports
I then removed helicoils, made new gaskets.

Took for a spin round the block all is well. Time will tell.
But very easy work and cost me $60 for the helicoil kit and 3hours.

General Discussion / Carby air filter
January 19, 2014, 05:18:47 AM
Hi all. So i have fitted a carter drt08 carby to my Q. But can not fit the original air filter. There is simply not enough room between carby and steering box.
The filter i have was removed off a 29 U. So my first question is are the filters same between Q and U. They look identical.
What has been used as a modern equivalent filter.

General Discussion / Carter carb
November 23, 2013, 06:34:57 AM
Hi all
I recently purchased a carter drt08. Its in very good condition. Has already had brass stand pipe and cone. It also has a good accelerator pump. Which needs a new seal. What have you guys been using as a replacment. I realy don't want to buy a seal kit. In my opionion there to expensive for what they include.  So far i have made my own gaskets. But just need something for pump.
I also have an original air cleaner which is in poor condition. I hopefully will be make a copy of it.

Thanks ian

General Discussion / Quiet time
May 28, 2013, 03:59:41 AM
Hey all,

For past couple of weeks i have notice that the forum is very quiet. So either Plymouth's are very reliable and never brake down or we are to busy fixing them...
For me, I made a Luggage rack for the back. Very happy with how it turned out. but feel its not strong enough to carry a trunk. It would hold it but i feel when driving it would bounce and do some horrible damage to chassis. But i am still happy with results.
I also gave it its first oil change since being on road. Oil was very thin. Ended up putting some 40-70 oil in it. Hopefully this quietens down the big end knock a little under heavy load. I cant afford a rebuild at present.
By the way i fixed the misfire. it turned out that i had 3 out of 4 spark plugs faulty. Since put originals back in and she runs sweet.
Are their any other brands out their that make 7/8 plugs. I am a bit against buying auto lite again after above result. So lesson learnt just because its new, don't rule it out.

Thats about it for me
How bout you???

General Discussion / Brake lights
April 22, 2013, 04:32:53 AM
The last time i drove the Q i realised that the brake light don't light up until i slam on the anchors. I only lightly use the brakes. So under normal braking my light does not work. its only until i do an emergency stop that it worked.
So today i fitted a off-on stop switch of a modern vehicle. It took about half hour to install and cost me a whole 10 bucks. Now the light works with small pedal movement.
I did fit a new low pressure switch but it just doesn't seem to be low enough.

General Discussion / Distributor
March 18, 2013, 03:39:46 AM
So i finally decided to get the distributor checked out. Just what i expected the shaft was worn out. this would explain the erratic misfire a idle. So the option i had was to either get the housing machined out and get bushes fitted or have a custom Bosch distributor made up. There was only 100 bucks difference between the too.
I decided to settle on a new Bosch one. With piece of mind that parts are available locally and cheap.
I am getting it done at Performance ignition, Nunawading.

Should get it Wednesday
Will upload a picture when it arrives.

General Discussion / Front Wheel Bearing and Seal
January 16, 2013, 05:05:39 AM
Just thought i share some modern timken numbers that fit
09074 outer cone $32
09194 outer cup   $18

14130 inner cone $25  ( the original number 14132 Is not available but 14132T is. Don't be mistaken this bearing has tapered ID and will not fit)
14274 inner cup  $18

Seal dimensions $8
ID: 1.812
OD: 2.875
W: .375

It is tight on the shaft but i rechecked mine after 350kms and all is well. Just make sure you grease the seal before fitting.

General Discussion / Gear oil through high pressure gun
January 09, 2013, 04:42:17 AM
Hi All,
I thought i would show you guys what i use to fill the axel bearing and steering box with oil through the grease nipple.
We have 2 of them which i thought were designed for grease.
So i have been trying to figure out a way to oil the rear axel bearings.
I then decided to pull one of these apart, remove all the grease and fill with oil and see what happens.
It forces oil through the fittings. Only problem with the one i used is a small capacity one, so it requires many pumps and many refills.
