General Discussion / Help needed
October 22, 2012, 04:52:25 AM
First up the Q has developed a noise that comes and goes, hot or cold. i have only noticed it at idle. oil pressure is fine. It sounds valve clearance. Checked and with in spec.
If the car had hydraulic lash adjusters i say its that, but it hasn't.
I have a feeling its coming from the oil pump area, you can feel the noise aswell as hear it through the oil lines.

Second thing, i am tackling the front shackle as i think the front end is rock hard. i was able to remove 2 pins but the others are stuck. and of cause its the ones in the chassis. so can't press em out. Is there a trick that people have found to work best to remove them.
Also is there supposed to be a grease hole in them?

I also removed the front shockers and they were dated to 1960. So this has left a question was the car on the road still in the 60s or is this when the restoration began. A question that i will never know the answer to unfortunately.

General Discussion / Front engine mount
August 20, 2012, 05:14:23 AM
Hi all.
I have noticed that the front engine mount is stuffed. rubber has gone hard and starting to fall apart. Also the engine pulley is very close to touching the cross member.
I am going to get it re rubbered. But just thought could someone tell me how high the rubber is supposed to be between the 2 plates.

I had to lift the engine up to remove the belt. Its dropped that far.

General Discussion / Tightening torque

Does anyone know what the big end and main bearing cap tightening torque is for the Q engine. Is there a book that has these figures for the whole car.

Thanks Ian

General Discussion / Tyres
June 28, 2012, 06:09:42 AM
Hi all,
A fellow member (wellery) has come up with a idea to bulk buy tyres for our vehicles.
I think this is a brilliant idea as we both require tyres. For me, the size i need is 500X20 which i think is the size for both 28 and 29.
Is there any one else who requires them?
I am also thinking we should get the tubes as well.
Ill do a call around and find brands and prices, if anyone else can help with this it would be appreciative.
Just a note we are both located in victoria, so this is kinda isolated to around here, interstate could be possible but freight would need to be organised.

Any suggestions or help welcome.

General Discussion / What does the badge mean?
June 19, 2012, 07:06:54 AM
I have a badge that is placed just in front of the drivers seat inline with the seat adjuster. it says LT DRAB H L F, DOVE NL L.
I am trying to work out what is means. Any ideas.

I am in the process of fitting new brass bushes. Could someone post a Photo of the shackles. The ones on mine appear to be wrong size. As in pin size to small. Are the pins the same size for eyes and shackles.

What oil should I use in the steering box? Is it a grease or oil.
Thanks Ian

General Discussion / 28Q headlights
June 02, 2012, 08:58:28 AM
I am looking into purchasing new headlights. i believe that ford model A use the same light as plymouth did. Is this correct?
If so would these lights work
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/220931194408?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_1279wt_956

The once that are on the car need a lot of work and would be easier and more reliable to source new ones. Plus they are far from original looking.

Thank Ian

Hi all,
My name is Ian Moore, and live in Melbourne Australia, I am 21yo and have an interest in anything mechanical.
My dad and I have been involved in restoring vintage stationary engines ever since i can remember. We have a nice little collection of engine/ machinery that get bigger every year. We travel around victoria with the engines to events, and show how things were done back in the day.

At the start of this year i decided to challenge my self in restoring an old car. I knew of an old wreck that was basically a complete drive line except the chassis was in may pieces. The vehicle was identified as a 1929 Plymouth U. I went and had a look at the car and decided that it was to far out of my league.

What i liked about the plymouth was the fact that not many are around in australia.
I eventually found a half restored 1928 Q tourer. That i purchased and am finishing the resto.
The Plymouth is Holden bodied and based on the Chrysler 55 series. Unfortunately the Fedco Badge was removed.
I have made a list of all thing required and should have her on the road at the end of the year.
The biggest item is getting a new roof made including the bows. But for now i am just getting drivable.

Mechanically wise shes ok except the oil pressure is slowly dropping. when i first got it, about 40pounds of pressure was on the gauge and now about 15. i have cleaned the sump and replace oil to no improvement. These figures slightly improve when she get hot. Any ideas? Im thinking oil pump slightly worn.
Will keep you up to date as i'm going along and require help
Regards Ian
