General Discussion / Re: Master cylinder disassembly?
August 22, 2008, 07:47:41 PM
Okay that's what I thought but I couldn't see it even after cleaning.  Reason was it wasn't there.  Corrosion was holding the piston stop in after the M/C was separated from the push rod.  I cleaned it up and soaked it and the piston stop popped right out.  The last part to come out was a domed sheetmetal valve.  It was sideways in the bore after the stop popped out.  Does anyone remember if this goes in with the dome facing the spring or away from it?

General Discussion / Master cylinder disassembly?

The diagrams I have seem to show a snap ring or "piston stop lock wire" that must be removed to get the "piston stop?" out and then the piston and rest of the inner parts.   I can't see this wire from the push rod end of the cylinder.  Any tips?  Does the stop have to be depressed inward to uncover the lock wire?  I tapped on it gently after soaking it with penetrant but I don't want to damage the unit.  Any help is appreciated.

the cap needs to be a vented cap or the leaky one will work.

I can vouch for that.

He has the wheels in hand but I can't mount them without the drums.  The four tires are new.

General Discussion / Re: 29 U Running Boards Question

I agree as well.  Mine will need major repair but I may be able to do it with some patch welding after I media blast the originals and cut out the thin stuff.  I don't have enough in my car to justify even 500 bucks on running boards.  If I win the lottery I'm sure the ones Mitchell has on egag will still be available.

Chet, I will try to get the tee if he still has the rear end. I heard back from him and he said he's not sure if the other stuff is still at the yard where he left it.  He will let me know when he finds out.  If all the remains are still there I will see if he has the running boards as well.  He indicated to me that there was a possibility that some of the stuff may have been removed as scrap by accident.

Thanks Chet.  I talked to the guy selling them today and he still has the complete front & rear ends so I may see about just getting it all.  He had fenders and other stuff as well so I may just go take a look at what he has.  He said the stuff was taken off a restored car that was hotrodded.  He didn't know if it was a coupe, sedan or what as he got all the stuff after it was removed.  If anyone out there has a need for anything let me know.  I may drive up there next weekend and have a look.

Does anyone know if a 29U came with wire spoked rims?  Mine has wood spoked rims but I have a chance to get some wire spoked with good tires on them that are said to come from a 29 Plymouth.  I'd like to have wheels to put on the car when I restore the wood spokes.

Chet, Just saw this as I've not been on for a while.  My 29U coupe has metal running boards with ribs running the long way on the underside and they appear original.  Were yours originally wood on the sedan?

Hi Gary and welcome.  I recently brought home a 29U coupe but have been busy with house and yard projects since late Nov.  I still check this board out almost every day even though I haven't had any thing to report lately.  I love your country and was in Melbourne in the late 80's. I also visited Brisbane, Darwin, Perth and Sydney on several ocassions.  Perth is much like San Diego where I've lived now for many years.
Chet has some very helpful info posted on his website that is linked on this one.  I recently got hold of a 28 Plymouth owners manual that has some info.  I will scan it when I go back to work so it can be available over the internet.

Chet, Yes I got the belts.  Thank you very much.  I'm going to run the one on there for a while since it was such a bear to get on.  I've been watching ebay for a book and will keep on looking.  I found your web page to be very helpful especially the section on setting the timing.
