We have had summer like weather for the last two weeks so I took my trusty 30U for a few spins. On the last trip to the store she developed a terrible knock when starting And, oil pressure took a big drop at idle. One rod bearing is missing about one inch of shoulder on the bottom half. My guess is this allows the oil to escape and causes a knock untill pressure returns. It looks new and shows very little if any wear. The question is should just one babbitt rod bearing be replaced and do you know someone that might pour or sell one. Thanks, Jim

Are you saying that when you first start up, oil pressure is low and the bearing knocks but after a time the pressure goes up and the nock goes away? If this be the case and you are sure which bearing it is you may be able to remove some spacers (if available) on the bearing cap to tighten the bearing.
Also I don't see any reason why you could not just change the one connecting rod bearing, but I'm a shade tree mechanic so my opinion isn't worth much. You need to talk with a engine rebuilder. Also try an inquiry on the POC page or contact the POC's 4 cylinder technical expert.

I feel your pain. If you have a modal A Ford engine rebuilder in your immediate area maybe he could replace the bearing for you. It wouldn't hurt to ask "Then & Now Auto Services" see the link below. If they don't do this they might be able to steer you in the right direction.

Any progress with the bearing problem.?
I found a fellow close by who does babbitt bearings, thats the good news. Took off the head to remove piston and rod and found grooves in the # one cylinder wall which were not there six months ago, bad news. I was given a spare engine (low milage) some time ago so I'm thinking of an engine swap but have not made up my mind. I value all opinions. thanks, jim
