General Discussion / Re: 29U - King Pins
November 22, 2020, 09:32:41 AM
Regarding the King Pins, I believe new king pin sets are still available for our cars. Any good general machine shop should be able to press them out and fit the new ones for you.  You can remove the axel and take it to the with the replacement kin pins.
As for the front wheel bearings, I had no problems finding replacement bearings and races back in 2015.  Back then I lived in Dothan, Alabama, a medium size town in the middle of a rather large rural area.  As a result, there was about every specialty shop you could imagine for repairing trucks and farm equipment.  At the time there were two shops that only handled bearings. I chuckle remembering when I went to one and brought in my original bearings  and races.  The fellow looked at the Timkin numbers and said, "no problem , we have plenty of these, they are the exact same ones used on many Chicken House fans."

General Discussion / Oil Indicator rod (dip stick)
November 21, 2020, 11:37:03 PM
It is curious that the low mark on the dip stick is at the practically empty point.  The manual stats, "The engine should never be operated when the oil is below the half full point of the indicator rod."  Seams like the "Low" should read "Empty"
:-\

When the oil is below the letter "F" it will take a quart to top it off.

No revenuers on this trip!  I know what you mean about the vacuum tank.  For years I have carried a small gas can with me in case I needed to refill the vacuum tank. I have rarely needed it.  But it is nice to have, just in case, like a spare tire.  Once time a while back the vacuum tank failed on me and I had to refill the vacuum tank several times to make it home.  The center wire managed to cut through the upper cork, which caused the tank to fail.  The fuel can pictured is really an old kerosene can.  Since it has a small spout, it works great for filling the vacuum tank.

That sounds really good, Chet.  I have always had to double clutch. Funny, the manual doesn't mention it, but with straight gears and no snycros, that is Usually the only way to shift smoothly. There is a good article on trannys in this months Skinned Knuckles.

It is such a nice day, couldn't resist the urge to go for a drive in the 29.  We drove out to Clouds Cove, a farming area nestled between the hills and the Tennessee River Southwest of Huntsville, Alabama.  We drive 40 miles round trip.

We didn't drive it all summer, from July to August.  We started driving again the last Saturday in Sept. We drove it 6 times in October. Today was the longest drive of the year.  So far this year we only drove a total of 248 miles.  In years past we would drive it almost 1,500 miles a year, mostly on Saturday mornings.

We couldn't resist the urge to go for a drive in the 29 Plymouth. We drove 40 miles this morning. A beautiful day. Saturday mornings are good times to take her on a drive since there a few other cars on the road. We stopped by the volunteer fire station and took some pictures.  Now to reduce the size so I can post!

Looking great!  I like your idea of using escrow on the side panels above the front seat back.

General Discussion / Re: Clutch question
November 24, 2019, 06:53:16 PM
After 5 months my 29 Plymouth is back on the road again, thanks to a  clutch off a parts car in California.

I tried to install the 31 clutch and throughout bearing on my 29, but had problems getting the bearing guide post to line up.  I believe my transmission was repaired years ago and welded on the front, such that the bearing guide pin does no line up properly. It works for my 29 because the pin had been bent in such a way to make it work.  However, the throughout bearing on  a 31 is different and the bent pin did not seem to line up on it, and I was not sure I could modify it to make it work.  It should not be a problem with a transmission that had not been repaired in that way.

Anyway, we are operational again.

General Discussion / Re: Clutch question

Hi Chet,
I located a 28-29 clutch pressure plate assembly and sent it to Kentucky Clutch for rebuild. It is ready for install. However, I also located a pressure plate assembly and throw out bearing for a 1931 Plymouth and it looks like it will fit. The design is more like a modern clutch pressure plate assembly, so it might be a better design.  I probably will put the 28-29 clutch in, and keep the 1931 clutch as a spare.

General Discussion / Re: Wooden wheel
October 26, 2019, 09:43:27 AM
I have a spare rear wooden 20 inch wheel for a 29U.  You are welcome to have it for cost of shipping. I used it for awhile when I was restoring my rear wheels one at a time. It rode well, but I would suggest replacing the spoke bolts so they all look alike.

Very nice!
