It's been a while since I've been on the board and just wanted to check in and say Happy Holidays!

General Discussion / Happy Thanksgiving
November 23, 2022, 09:42:56 AM
Hello everyone ,

Hope everyone is well.  I've been AWOL from this board for a while working on other projects in the garage. However, had the old gal out about a week ago for a local show to keep her exercised.

General Discussion / Door Hinges for 29 Roadster
January 16, 2022, 10:05:29 AM
Hi all,

Had the roadster out for some exercise yesterday and when I got back and was going over the car, I noticed I have a crack in my upper, driver side door hinge. When the door is closed the alignment is fine but you can tell it needs to be fixed.  Don't know if the roadster hinges are the same as others but, does anyone have one available, or has anybody had to repair one on their car? I'll try to post a pic later but wanted to get this out.

General Discussion / Check this out - thoughts?
November 30, 2021, 05:35:13 PM
Greetings,

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.  When checking my oil a couple weeks ago, my dipstick actually broke and I lost most of it in the pan...crazy.  After draining the oil and removing the pan,  I was able to get the broken pieces out and clean everything up.  I have a 30U block that I took a dipstick from. I don't believe this is correct, but it is working. Please see the pictures of the broken dipstick and the one that I just took out of the other block. On one side of the handle it says 6 quart capacity. Also, see the pictures I took of the crank from underneath.  What do you notice here?

General Discussion / Temperature Check
May 01, 2021, 01:22:43 PM
Had the car out at a local Cars and Coffee this morning and took for a nice ride afterward.  I decided for first time ever to check the temperature of the motor using an infrared temp gun that I recently purchased to use on the truck project I'm working on.  I found this gun to be fairly accurate after comparing the readings to a reliable aftermarket temp gauge used on the truck.  When I got back to the garage, I left the car idling at operating temp while taking a few readings.  Please see the attached pics of readings at various spots.  Let me know your thoughts and what temps you're running if you've ever measured them.  Thanks!

General Discussion / Update on Springs
May 01, 2021, 01:12:13 PM
Took the car out for the first time in a few months (been working on the 51 Dodge truck) and she ran great.  I forgot that I had placed some rubber "insulators" I made at each helper spring shackle and had oiled up the springs.  They look much better now and she rode nice and quiet!

Just wanted to check in...haven't been on much lately, as I've been working on a new acquisition.  This 51 Dodge B3B PU.  Still a few more things to do, but coming along.  I've been giving the old gal a little break, but going to get her out soon to a few local events.

General Discussion / Shackle
November 16, 2020, 08:36:54 AM
All,

Please see attached photo.  This shackle is a little loose (rattles) on both the front and rear passenger side of the car.  Driver's side is tight.  It appears worn looking at the hole where pin is.  Are there ways to repair with an insert or bigger pin?  Or is this replace only.

Chet - was looking at your rebuild thread on this to get some ideas.

General Discussion / Air Cleaner/Silencer Question
September 21, 2020, 06:03:30 PM
All:

Several years ago I found an air cleaner on eBay and had to have it as it looked like the correct one (and still does).  Just this past week, another one showed up and claimed it was NOS for a '29 Plymouth...I had to have it for $25!  I can tell you I paid a lot more for the one I bought a while ago.  The new one has part #41931, which shows for a later '28 and Canadian built U.  The part number for a '29 U is 43665 and "non-standard equipment".  Right or wrong, I believe my car to be an early U regardless.

The one on the car now has a different number that is not in the parts book.  The last four numbers appear to be 9231; I can't make out the first number, but may be a 2 or a 7.  So, I don't know what this one goes to although it looks correct.  However, it never quit just right when I got it and had to make an adapter for it to fit in the carb throat.  Is it a Chrysler? Desoto? Dodge? Chevy or what?

I'm going to put on the "new" one assuming it will fit without any "adapter" needed.  Just curious what your thoughts are and which air cleaner you may be using.  I have the original Carter RT-08 carburetor.

Pics attached.

General Discussion / Wood Spoke Repair
June 26, 2020, 02:40:35 PM
Doing some repair work on my left rear wood wheel, the culprit that needs attention every few years.  I had "repaired" these 6-7(?) years ago by using a method in an issue of Skinned Knuckles that was helpful at the time.  This involved using 1/2" copper tubing (from Home Depot) as a sleeve to take up some slack between the spoke and the fellow.  Then, a 1" washer would be screwed down in place to cover the top of the spoke.  This was an easy fix that lasted for a while.  When I had the wheels re-done (painted and pinstriped about three years ago), the painter removed the washers and left the copper in place.  I guess the paint had helped hold everything together since then.

Fast forward to last weekend, when after a drive I could hear the spokes (turns out about half of them) making clicking sounds indicating another repair would need to be made.  I took the wheel off the other night to inspect and tried a slightly different repair.  The copper is still in place, but I drove two brad nails into each spoke between the copper and the metal fellow.  This tightened everything up nicely, however, I wasn't done yet.  From there, I used a product by Wonderloc (Tite Chairs) which works on wood, metal, etc.  This was put in around the spokes between the copper and metal and surrounding the brads...hopefully a little more insurance.  Then, I used another product on top of the exposed spoke wood (no washers anymore) called Swel-Lock used for swelling wood/tightening up wood joints.  This soaked in the wood nicely and into the holes from the previous screws.  Everything looks and feels to be nice and tight, but only a drive and time will tell.  To find a set of wire wheels might be on my list in the future!

General Discussion / How is Everyone Holding Up?
April 08, 2020, 04:23:57 PM
Just wanted to check in and see how everyone was doing.  The weather here has been good and I've been fortunate enough to be able to work from home.  I've been hanging out in the garage in between and taking the old gal out on occasion to do a little social distancing and to get out of the house!

Stay healthy...

All:

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.  In keeping the family tradition alive (over 40 years), I attended the 62nd Annual Volusia Region AACA show in Ormond Beach, FL this past weekend.  It was a 200+ mile round trip in the old gal; drove down Friday afternoon so I could be in the gaslight parade that night (113 cars total) and was at the show on Saturday before heading back.

Coincidentally, this is the same weekend every year for the Turkey Rod Run in Daytona Beach right down the road where there are typically 5-6,000 cars in town for that show.  Both are great events if you've never been and the weather is usually perfect.

Something a little different...since this car came out of Syracuse, NY when my Dad found it in '62, he put on this tag at some point.  After some thought, I decided to re-paint it myself, as it was looking a little ragged to me with everything else about the car being in nicer condition.  Not perfect, but came out pretty good.

Greetings:

Although no issues with running or cooling, I decided to replace all the hoses and clamps on the car.  I recently did the top hose and clamps with no issue, now moving on to the bottom assembly.  This lower assembly hasn't been off in ages and will be cleaned up and re-painted.  Question, the metal hose assembly looks to have a bigger piece at the bottom here added on.  I don't know, but I doubt this is the way it came originally.  Can someone confirm one way or the other?

I used 2 1/8" hose on top with the correct 2-wire clamps.  Going to use the same hose and clamps on the bottom assembly, but had a question about this lower assembly first.

General Discussion / Radiator Hoses
May 22, 2019, 07:39:47 PM
All:

Looking for radiator hoses, preferably all black and wrapped.  Looked at Restoration Supply and it looks like only all red in the 2 1/8 ID size (I assume right size).  Any other sources?

Thanks!

General Discussion / Generator/Charging Question
September 09, 2018, 10:30:23 AM
All:

Took the car out this morning for about an hour.  I noticed (and never really paid too much attention before) that my ammeter never seems to go above 9-10 amps on the gauge while driving at almost any speed.  Just curious if this is "normal" or how your cars compare.  It seems a little low, but not sure.

Thoughts?

General Discussion / Battery Cable Question
September 05, 2018, 06:47:19 PM
All:

I'm ordering new battery cables...2/0 AWG 00, 36" for the starter switch side, 18" for ground.  Where is your ground cable attached?  Mine is attached to lower left transmission bolt, where it's been for years.  I've read in various forums (various 6V older cars) that some attach to frame?  Not sure it matters, but just curious.

General Discussion / Leaking Wheel Cylinder Question
November 21, 2017, 09:24:49 AM
All:

I had my wheel cylinders re-sleeved and brake shoes relined last year and things have been good.  I decided to mainly do this at the time since my right rear cylinder would occasionally leak and I would just put a new rebuild kit to fix it.  I did this a couple times over the years before having all wheel cylinders re-done last year.

I've taken the car to a few shows over the past few weeks and have driven it a lot.  When I looked in the garage the other day, I noticed some brake fluid on the floor and it was the right rear!  Coincidental?  Ironic?  I don't know...I replaced the rear boot/cap (where it would always leak) since it looked "swollen".  The new boot is more snug, but I think there could be another issue.

I find it strange that it's the same wheel as before I had all this done...is there anything else I should be looking at?  Rear brake shoe position?

For what it's worth, the company who did the work (Brake and Equipment Warehouse in Minnesota) said they would take care of it no problem if I wanted them to re-do it.

Thoughts?
