Very Nice,  The engine will be fine for either parts or rebuild.  Are you keeping it as a strict 29 or will you use the PA transmission, fuel pump, water pump, ???

Nice project, keep us in the loop.  I hope to start working on mine this summer.

Don't sweat it.., the engine is period and if it is good and works for your purposes than what's the difference unless you are going for strict originality.  What year is the roadster you are building ?

I doubt whether this engine was original to a 1931 PA.  Yes there was a thrift series 1 & 2 but there was no difference in the PA power plant.   I am sure it came out of a PA but I don't think it started its life in a PA.   If anything, probably a new style U motor.  Does the engine have a mechanical fuel pump, water pump, and the hose connections would be different than an old style U.  Also a different bell housing.  Do you have a picture of the whole engine?  I don't know what the T before the U means unless someone stamped it there to insinuate it was a thrift series motor. 

Sorry I didn't see the other picture.  I'm thinking New Style U motor with a T stamped in the front of the serial #. Although the 30U motor started at U200001 - U277000

Frank, I think next time I do this I will follow the directions as stated, maybe this will solve the issue with the twisting of the rim ?

I have a vintage Atlas Split Rim Jack which is the same style as the one Vintage Tires is selling.  The one thing I noticed using this type of jack is that it has a tendency to twist the compressed side of the split rim which can lead to a fit that is slightly off when installing the new tire. (split rim edges not perfectly aligned)  Anyone have any tricks to eliminate this possible outcome.   I guess when you start if the rim is slightly bent to one side compress the other ???

Any thoughts ?  (or do I just have old rims that have metal fatigue.)

If you put that motor in your car I think you would have to loose the wood wheels and beef up the suspension.

Its almost time to pull the cover off the old girl and get to those repairs we've been planning.  Also working on the antique cars would be a good idea.  Hopefully I can start the restoration to my 29 after I sell my house in Virginia.  I have been getting the last 17 years of honey-do's done before the real estate guy comes and plants the sign.  Started last July and spent the summer working on the outside and the winter working on the inside.  The real estate broker will be by this week to get the show on the road.  Ya-hoo !!!  Can't hardly recognize the old place somebody will be getting a better house than the one I was living in.

In retrospect,  getting around to something isn't the same as actually doing it.  :)

The answer is Yes.

I have 20" wheels on my 29 which was manufactured around March of 1929.  I also have a complete set of 19" wheels from a 30u and they swap out no problem. Drums and hubs are the same.

I think if you drive your car a lot turn signals are a good safety feature.  I wired my rear lights into a trailer type plug connector that's hidden under the car.  This way I can remove them for the occasional car show.  The rear lights are clamped to the rear fender.  I couldn't find a picture.  Like you.., no damage to original parts.  The front parking lights are wired as turn signals so yes the whole headlight bucket blinks.

The Q was produced from June 1928 until January 1929.  The engine numbers ran from Q175000 to Q242482 for a total of 67,482 across all cars manufactured as Q's.  If you dived by 7 to include production in June 1929 that's approximately 9,640 per month.  Your engine U186007 would be somewhere in the July timeframe.  I don't know how the engines were divide between Detroit and Windsor so we can just assume sequential.  Of course we are taking an educated guess here but I think your car was pretty early and I would suspect late July or early August of 1928.  Just a guess assuming that the engines were installed sequentially and initial start up production was slow until both productions lines were in full operation.

These are great photos.  I need to completely restore my car's roof and I have very little left of the original wood.  Along with other threads showing similar information I think I will be ready to tackle this soon.  I hope I get the slope right.

Hi Dave,

Wow !!!  It is very interesting that this offset was manufactured originally.  I guess the intention was to ensure only one installation configuration for the gear/distributor setup.  This offset would make it impossible to install the assembly/distributor 180 degrees out.  Thanks for the pictures very cool.

It certainly looks like a 1929 U engine.  The radiator shroud is from a 29 and the engine number U3948 would put it in approximately the first quarter production of 1929, that is if the engine numbers were sequential. 

BTW... You can buy a new distributor base.  There are a couple of threads about this part.
