For Sale- 1929-32 4-Cyl Plymouth Crankshaft.  Asking $80.  Also 1930-32 Plymouth Wire wheel.  From a 1930 30U; not exactly sure if it fits the other 4-cyl years, but it probably does. Diameter is 19".  Takes 4.75" x 19" tire.  Asking $45.  Will not ship the crankshaft, it is too heavy, but can deliver to most of the Carlisle, PA shows, or can possibly deliver within about 125 miles of Washington D.C.  Will ship the wheel, please send a zip code for a shipping quote.  I am located in northern Virginia.

If interested, feel free to make me an offer, want these to go to a good home and avoid the scrap yard, but they need to go, I cannot use them and they are taking up space.

Hello,
Does anyone know if the original generator bracket nuts and bolts on a 30 U were hexagonal or square?  This is the bracket that goes under the generator has has two attachment points, not the bracket on top where you can adjust the tension of the generator belt.  Thanks!

General Discussion / 30 U gas pedal
September 28, 2019, 09:44:28 PM
One question I never got around to asking: does the gas pedal on a 1930 30U have any rubber piece on it, or is it just metal?   My car just has a metal circle that is wearing thin, but no rubber petal attached to it.  right next to it is a "foot rest" knob that has a rubber knob on it.

Does anyone know of a source for a new Steering Column to Dash Clamp Gasket?  Mine has worn out completely.  Thanks.

General Discussion / 1930 30U Water Pump Oiler?
August 03, 2018, 03:09:27 PM
Hello,
What does the rear oiler on a factory 1930 30U water pump look like?  According the the owner's manual, the water pump should have an open oil hole at the front an a oil cup on the rear.  Is it a small spring-door cup, does it have a bend or angle to it?  Is it a larger cup?  Not sure.  My car had a 4" long tube screwed in with a zerk fitting for grease at the end.  The hole is not vertical, it comes out at maybe a 15-20 degree angle, so thought I'd ask the experts what is correct for the car.  Thanks!

General Discussion / Interior door handle finish
March 12, 2018, 04:13:41 PM
Hello,
I have a 30U roadster.  The original interior door handles are currently the color of raw pot metal.  I assume these would have been nickel plated originally, but since I see no trace of any plating anywhere, I am not 100% sure.  does anyone know how these interior door handles should be finished, originally?  Thanks!

General Discussion / Roadster Door Hinges
July 23, 2017, 02:14:25 PM
Hello,
The doors on my 30U roadster are sagging to the point that the striker is worn almost in half.  I've been closing the door the last few years by lifting up to prevent easy closing and further damage.  I can get new strikers, but I want to fix the hinges.

When trying to remove the hinges, 2 of the 4 screws holding them in place just spin in place and cannot be removed.  My assumption is that they are in the body wood and just spinning in place, but I don't know for sure, as I've never had the car apart.  I also noticed that the frame where the hinges attach, attached to the body, have 3 screws in them, so this piece comes off as well.

Before I start tearing into it, or doing unnecessary damage, I thought I'd ask for some expert advice and see if there are any tips or tricks to getting the hinges off, or should I start trying to pry them out or try removing the entire panel with the 3 screws.  Thanks for any advice.

General Discussion / Generator/Cutout switch function
December 05, 2015, 03:48:31 PM
Hello,
I've written here before about this issue, but had some additonal questions:  How is the cut-out switch normally supposed to operate on a stock generator for these cars?  I have a 30-U.  I've been having a lot of problems with my generator recently, but I don't really know what "normal" is anymore, since it's never really worked correctly.  From my understanding, the cutout switch will operate when the battery needs to be charged.  When the cutout is operating, it should read around 0-1 at idle and up to about 18-20 amps at full throttle.  When the battery is fully charged, and the cutout switch is not operating, what should the amperage reading be?  Will the cutout come on when headlights are turned on no matter what, due to the large drain on the battery?  What is the normal reading for amperage at idle and at full throttle if the cutout switch is off?

I had my generator profressionally rebuilt and tested with a functional cutout switch.  When I got it home, it worked for about 15 minutes, then did not work at all.  I cleaned all the connections to the bracket where the generator attaches, cleaned the attachments to the cutout, and cleaned some residue off the inner rotor where the new brushes are leaving some black residue.  This made it work again for another 20-25 minutes of driving over 2 trips, now it doesn't work again.  When I put the headlights on, the cutout switch does not turn on and amperage drops to around -17 amps.

Is all of this normal and the cutout switch should turn on again later if I drain the battery further, or is this indicative of a problem?  I'm not an electrical guy, so I don't know if my system is really functioning correctly or not.  Thanks for any further advice.

General Discussion / Push rod nut size for 30U
August 30, 2015, 07:37:25 PM
Hello,
I'm in the market for an original tappet wrench for my 30U.  I bought one at Hershey last year, but it's too big.  I adjusted my valves last month, but forgot to write down the size of the nuts on the push rod.  I want to say 7/16", but can anyone confirm the size of the push rod nuts?  Thanks again!

General Discussion / Water Pump Packing
August 02, 2015, 10:59:02 AM
Hello,
I have a '30 30U with a water pump.  I had the pump rebuilt a couple years ago and it worked okay; a few drips here and there.  I recently went on a 400-mile your with it, and now it's leaking quite a lot.  It looks like it needs new packing.

I've never messed with packing before, but it appears that the rebuilder put in a rubber seal in the packing nut and there was no packing material in addition to this. I believe I overtightened the nut a little trying to stop the original few drips, so I probably ruined the rubber seal.

My question to the group would be, should I leave the rubber seal in place and put packing on top of that (there is still some room within the packing nut), or should I remove the rubber seal and just go with the regular packing material?

Thanks for any responses!

General Discussion / 30U Electrical Gremlin
May 24, 2015, 04:12:00 PM
Hello,
I have a 30U and I'm having problems with the fuse going out all the time now.  I'm out of fuses, so thought I'd ask for some advice.  The car will start and drive just fine, but will have no lights or horn without a fuse.  If I put a fuse in and connect the battery, the fuse will heat up and break in about 8 seconds (30 Amp fuse).  I've had similar problems with the fuse going out in the recent past, both times were when I demonstrated the horn at a car show with the key off.  I would replace the fuse and be fine for a while, now, the fuse won't last at all.

I assume I have a crossed wire somewhere or a bad ground, but wanted to ask for advice before I start taking the whole electrical system apart past the fuse point.  It's also impossible to test, as I can't get any power to the system without blowing the fuse.  I'm not very skilled with electrical, either.  Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

General Discussion / Wheel rim wrench
February 18, 2015, 06:24:40 PM
Hello.  In the 1930 owner's manuals, it mentions under the tools section that a Wheel Rim Wrench is included.  Does anyone have a photo of what this looks like?  I'm still trying to put together a complete collection of tools.  Thanks for any assistance.

General Discussion / Roadster Top rest bars plating type
February 07, 2015, 04:44:08 PM
Hello, I have a 30U roadster and the 4 top support bars that are mounted on the rear deck are currently pot-metal colored, which is the way they were when I bought the car 4 years ago.  My question is, would these bars have originally been just polished-up pot metal, nickel plated, or chrome plated?  I assume these were originally nickel plated, but I don't know for sure.

What about the interior door handles?  What was the finish type on those?  Mine are currently just pot metal-colored.

Any help is appreciated.

General Discussion / Another Wiper Motor Question
November 05, 2014, 07:25:30 PM
Sorry for all the wiper motor questions, but does anyone have a photo of the correct wiper motor for a 1930 open car?  I think a '28 or '29 would work for me as well.  I have part numbers, thanks to you guys, but I still don't know what it looks like, exactly.  Thanks again for all the great posts.

General Discussion / Plymouth Tool Kit
October 26, 2014, 05:11:10 PM
Does anyone have any photos of the correct tool kit, or even photos of any pieces from it, for 1930?  I'm guessing 1928-1932 may be about the same, however, so that would work, too.  Thanks again for any assistance.

General Discussion / 30U Engine problem
October 19, 2014, 04:53:23 PM
Was driving my 30U today and had a big problem.  Car was running fine, but when I pulled away from a stop and accelerated fairly hard to get up to speed, a saw a puff of grey smoke from the back and started immediately losing power when accelerating.  It felt like the car was missing fairly badly upon acceleration, but was fine when at idle or off the gas. I'm guessing I may have a valve problem.  Plugs and wires are showing power when hooked up to a multi-meter.  Any other ideas before I open this thing up to figure out what's wrong?  Thanks again for any suggestions.

Thank you to Doug, who already gave me a photo and an answer to my question, but I still have some follow-on questions.  I have a 30U Sport Roadster.

I'm doing more research on the 2 small holes and 1 slightly larger hole I have under the lower left of my dash board (see 1st photo).  These holes fit for a dash gauge light switch perfectly.  I've seen a '31 Roadster with this light switch and a junk dash board at Hershey from a '29 Coupe with this light switch in the same position as well (see 2nd and 3rd photos).  I purchased this junk switch and it does fit perfectly in my car.  My car currently has the dash gauge lights wired into the headlight switch, however, and I see no reference to this switch in the 1930 First Edition owner's manual.  I do not have access to a later edition.  I do see this switch in the 5th edition 1929 owner's manual, though.

On the other hand, I've now had two other knowledgable people tell me that these holes would be for the vacuum wiper off/on switch.  This is the switch in the photo that Doug gave me in the "Items wanted" section, but it does not appear to fit the holes I have in my dash, as the switch above appears to just screw into one hole and does not have the two accompanying screw holes for which to secure it.  In fact, I found what was advertised as a '31 Dodge (I believe), at Hershey that has both switches (4th photo) which confuses me even more.

So, my question to anyone who may have an answer is:

1) What should go in the 3 holes in the first photo (my 30U roadster).  The answer could be "nothing," the "dash light switch," or the "vacuum switch."  If it is the vacuum wiper switch, why do I have 3 holes available, but the vacuum wiper switch appears to only need 1 (see 4th photo)?  Is it possible that on a late-production 30U Roadster, it could be that there was no separate vacuum wiper switch and it was simply on the wiper motor itself, AND the dash board light switch was not offered and the wiring was simply attached to the headlight switch?

Thank you for any ideas on this, as I'm quite confused at this point.  Sorry for the lengthy posting.

General Discussion / Dash Light Switch Question
October 14, 2014, 05:12:07 PM
All,
I have a 1930 30U Sport Roadster.  When I bought the car 3 years ago, it had one larger hole and two smaller holes on the bottom lower left underneath of the dash board.  I finally found out that these holes were for the dash board light swtich from a gentleman at Hershey, as I had previously thought they were for the wiper switch.  Anyway, I wanted to ask, did all 1930  30U's have this switch, or only late model year cars?  I looked at the wiring diagram in the First Edition Onwer's Manual and it did not show this switch at all.  My car was built in April, 1931, one of the later ones.

Can anyone confirm/deny if my car would have had this switch?  Does anyone have a later version of the 30U wiring diagram to show how it was wired and the color of the wires?  My car is currently wired with dash lights via the headlight switch.  Thanks for any insight.

General Discussion / 30U (Earlier or later) Tire Pump
September 01, 2014, 07:23:21 PM
Hello,
Does anyone have an original tire pump from a 30U (or maybe a Q, U, or PA)?  If so, would they be willing to share a photo or two of it with me?  I'm looking for one for my 30U, but I don't know what it looks like.  Thanks for any help, as usual.

General Discussion / 1930 30U Tires
August 23, 2014, 08:07:30 PM
Hello,
I'm looking into buying new tires for my 1930 30U roadster. Does anyone know the original type and manufacturer of the tires, out of curiosity?  What would be the most "correct" tire to purchase that is available currently?  What about the schrader valve style or type?  I have the Coker and Universal catalogs, and would like the make the most authentic choice for my car.  Thanks again for any advice.
