General Discussion / paint colors for vintage plymouths

I have searched the internet for good examples of color combinations for my old Plymouth.  I recently looked at TCP Global as I used their paint on another vehicle.  Many of you probably already know of this site but I was excited to find what I believe is the exact color combination for my 1929 business coupe (chrome green dark).  Here is the link (you can enlarge the samples by double clicking to get a larger image to look at).  http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/EraChips.html   Now you just have to decide which color fits your car.  Kim

General Discussion / National Plymouth Meet, Tucson AZ

I am leaving tomorrow to drive my '35 to Tucson along with a '33 2dr sedan, '37 coupe, and a '46 sedan from the SF Bay area.  The one-way trip is over 900 mi and will all be on 2-lane roads; should be an interesting adventure!  I was thinking that if any forum members wanted me to get a picture of something on a particular model/year car I would try to do that if you will reply to this post with the specific request.  I'll also try to post some pictures of our trip and the event.  Kim Mc

General Discussion / an engine question...

I've taken my '29 engine (original) to a rebuilder.  I believe it to be in good condition (it still turns over easily), has about 60K miles on it, but hasn't been run since the 50's.  I was thinking about installing inserts until I read the two threads on this forum about babbitt vs. inserts.  Now I'm leaning towards staying with the babbitt.  And, maybe the babbitt bearings in it don't need replacement.  Anyhow, I'm looking for guidance from all of you with experience (or opinion) regarding rebuilding these early engines.  I just plan to drive mine occasionally just for the enjoyment; I'm not trying to build a show car or a daily driver.  Let me know what you think.  Thanks.  Kim

I am getting ready to pull the engine from my '29U.  Will it come out easily without removing the steering column and box?  I want to keep the steering in for now so I can move the car around.  Thanks for your help.  Kim Mc

Last week a street rodding neighbor called and said he was bringing a radiator over for me to look at.  He bought it sight-unseen from a friend who said it would fit his '32 International pickup street rod.  It wasn't right so he brought it over and asked me if I knew what the radiator fit; he was going to take it to a swap meet to sell.  What I saw was a "honey-comb" core vintage radiator still secured in the original wooden crate.  I told him it looked identical to the radiator in my '29 Plymouth coupe.  We pulled out the box and on the end of the crate was stenciled "radiator for Plymouth; 1929-30, 4 cyl".  Apparently no one bothered to look at the box!  I bought it right there.  I needed it for the restoration of my great-grandfathers coupe.  Sorry, it is not for sale.  But I thought some of you would like to see it.  Kim Mc

I'm working on restoration of my '29 biz coupe.  I know cooling the '29 engine can be an issue since it doesn't have a water pump.  Also, summer air temperatures in the central valley of CA where I live could present a challenge to keeping the engine running cool when driving it in during hot weather.  I was wondering if anyone out there has experimented with placing a small 6v in-line water pump alongside the lower radiator hose to force more water through the radiator?  Would this work?  Could it overwhelm the radiator flow capacity and force water out the overflow (thereby making the overheating problem potentially a bigger problem).  It seems to me that such a strategy could work and would not require major modifications.  I would appreciate hearing thoughts and ideas, especially from anyone who may have tried this or other modifications to improve engine cooling.  Thanks.  Kim Mc

General Discussion / Changing a tire on my 29U coupe

I've never changed a tire on one of these old split rims.  I have the split rim tool but I don't know how to use it.  Also, I don't know the correct procedure to unmount the old tire and mount the replacement.  Are "how to" instructions available anywhere or can someone brief me on the correct procedure/process?  Thank you.  Kim Mc

The metal edge of the radiator shell around the radiator fill hole has corroded away (picture attached).  Can someone advise me if this can be repaired and who might have the skills to make the repair?  Thanks guys.  Kim

General Discussion / steering gear control cover

Can someone tell me how to remove the "steering gear control cover", that donut shaped bakelite piece that surrounds the horn button and covers the light and throttle levers on the steering wheel of my '29 coupe.  I want to start working on fabricating new levers as my pot-metal ones are broken (as most are I understand).  It seems like it should unscrew but I can't budge it and I don't want to break it.  I thought someone out there might be able to give me some advice.  Thanks.  Kim Mc

General Discussion / '29 ignition switch/coil combo...

I just removed the combination ignition switch/coil from my '29 coupe.  The switch on the back of the coil is pot metal and has so many cracks in it that it could crumble in many small pieces at any time (picture attached).  I'm sure these are the original parts.  I was planning to replace this with a new switch/coil combo from Atwater-Kent.  Does someone know how the bezel surrounding the lock cylinder is attached and how to remove it without damage?  Has anyone installed the Atwater-Kent switch/coil combo?  Also, is there anyone out there that refurbishes the bezel with new paint, lettering (ignition,on, off, lock).  I don't know if the coil is good and the key has been lost.  Any advice or guidance you might be able to provide is appreciated.  I am a novice at this.  Thanks.  Kim Mc
