General Discussion / 28 Q engine info
March 27, 2018, 06:13:53 PM
greetings all - looking for any info on torque specs  on rods and mains for above engine.  After doing cylinder leakdown test it was confirmed that rings are collapsed and/or worn.  I have located pistons and rings from Hagans Auto in Washington and Melling cylinder liners for the engine.  Plan of attack is to pull head and mic the bores to see how bad things are.  If not toooo bad will ball hone cylinders to break glaze and install new pistons/rings.  If too far gone then out she comes.  Would like any info regarding torques if at all available.
thanx in advance for any info

General Discussion / oil pressure gauge
April 28, 2017, 07:26:58 AM
Greetings all - does anyone have any idea or suggestions as to where I could get the oil pressure gauge on a 28 Q repaired.  In the Car I am working on the gauge is now pegged all the way.  This happened during transport to the paint shop (bad bumps on the rollback).. Car normally carries 20-25 psi idling as I have checked pressure before with independent gauge.  Plan is to put another gauge under dash (temporary) while  original is out for repair.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I know this gauge works with spring pressure instead of a bourdon tube so I suspect damage there from the rough ride.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanx in advance.

Chetbrz - looks identical except I don't have the top cover - is that tank in service at this time? I would really kike to know the dimensions of the cork float but would not even think of asking you to remove it from your car just to check it for me.  Am in now hurry as the car is scheduled for paint and upholstery this spring..Just trying to get all the little things taken care of before then.  Even if you could approximate the size of the cork unit would give me a place to start....I can get float material from Restoration Supply Co that is non reactive to ethanol and have a lathe to size it on...Thanks for your help so Far.....

chetbrz - is that photo of an original tank or one that is repaired?  Reason I ask is that the one I took apart did not have anywhere near that amount of cork for a float unit.  If they were that large it explains a lot of my problem as my brass float is not nearly that large..Could I get a measurement fo the float assembly if possible?  (height and dia)    Thanks in advance.....

The one I had had 3 corks  - each one smaller than the other stacked one on top of another.  All were deteriorated to the point that I could not really tell the sizes.  Also, read that cork has to be sealed due to ethanol and I had no idea what to use so went with the brass float and installed it in the same location on the rod. Evidently, the brass does not have the same characteristics as the cork regarding buoyancy.  I don"t know if this is a kingston or stewart warner unit as it is not marked and I haven't seen any photos to be able to tell the difference, if any.  Am very interested in the check valve as this would make sense but have never heard of that in any info I can find on these units.  Would any one out there know of the availability of schematics for these units??  I would love to make this unit functional again but at this point it is not worth destroying the engine.  Any help would be appreciated....

Greetings all - have a question.  Had to replace cork float in the vacuum tank as it was completely gone -  Installed brass float.  Car runs fine but I am now sucking gas thru the vacuum line to oil pump - not good!!
Figure I must float too high.. Does anyone know correct height and/or what I could use for float ta alleviate this problem????

General Discussion / Re: FYI - Plymouth Heater
March 25, 2017, 08:12:51 AM
I believe that would be to let out excess heat in summertime driving.  The tin box heater on the 28 Q that I work on has two holes that are on the top, covered by sliding tin plates which allow one to open them and let the heat out when heater is not in use.

think you should check this with your frt seat back bolted in place as it pulls the door pillars together....

General Discussion / Re: Oil Pressure Readings Down

was wondering if you are using the vacuum fuel pump? If you have a small vacuum leak could affect oil pressure especially at idle as vacuum is supplied by oil pump....Just food for thought.

General Discussion / Re: Shock Absorbers

ok - remove from vehicle and take the cap off the top by removing the two screws.  Probably stuck on with gasket.  When u do this the lever will come up and may become lodged in the top of the casting.  No big deal as you can push it back with a large screwdriver.  Remove the plug on the bottom side of the shock housing.  You will find a small piston and spring behind it.  Make sure that the holes in the piston valve are clean.  Flush everything out with kerosene while working the lever up and down to get the crud out.  Put the valve and spring back in with a new red fiber gasket on the cap.  I filled mine with transmission oil up to the point where the linkage will dip into the oil when depressed about 1/4 way down.  A new made gasket for the top and you should be ready to put back on.  See if this helps your shocks.  GOOD LUCK
