Different body makers? Hayes, Briggs? What do I have?

I found a steel tag nailed to the passenger side floor of my 29 U with numbers/letters on it. M55-CS-7334. Had a guy tell me today there was another manufacturer that would build the bodies for Ford, Plymouth etc. I guess thats why back then most cars seem to look the same. What does the tag I found tell me?

My tag is brass, located on drivers side floor and clearly says HAYES BODY CORP.  88-46139.  I understood 4 dr Sedan bodies were built by Hayes, other styles by Briggs.  Have you deciphered the numbers on your dash?

No, I don't know how. VIN is GP992H. Canadian car.

Not a Model Q,

Model U = GP-583-W   GC-499-L from the Windsor Plant Canada.  GP-992H would fall in this production run.

Currently traveling and do not have access to any additional info.

Good, you are able to read the FEDCO number.  Mine was extremely hard to decipher due to exposure to the elements.  Attempting to find what month it was made, but no luck so far.

Does your body tag have a manufacturer stamped in it?  If so, who?

If you haven't gotten a manual for your car, they are extremely helpful for people like me.  I wish I had one when I bought my car.  It would have answered a myriad of questions.  You can find reproductions and originals on ebay from time to time.  Google 1929 manual, but you know that.
