Title: 29 Sedan Pin Striping
Post by: chetbrz on July 16, 2022, 04:09:05 PM
Does anyone have a picture that clearly shows the pin striping requirement for the 29U sedan?

False alarm..., I found what I needed.  But any words of wisdom are always appreciated.

Looking back at pictures I was trying to find guidance for the people painting on my car's body pin striping.   Like around the hinges on the 4 door sedan.., the stripe is above the hinge but is not on the hinge for the lower stripe.  See photo of Crazzydave's survivor below.

I looked for pictures that showed as many original details as I could find.  Not restored cars.  Dave's car was my standard because it seemed unmolested.  If your car has wooden wheels, these were also pin striped.  Ted (reacertb) has info and pictures of the wood wheel pin striping.

Glad you found what you needed.  I have been searching for the correct striping for my 30-U coupe for years and have yet to find an unmolested example to copy.  The striping on the restored cars is all over the place. I would love to be able to get the striping correct but since I am almost ready for striping and have no clear guidlines (no pun intended) I will probably just do what I think looks best.

I feel your pain.  You might try to find some old ad photos from old magazines.  Even the pictures I posted of Dave's car there is no definitive truth.  Everything seems to be either a best guess or what the consensus among Plymouth owners is.  You could give a call to the POC's 30U tech advisor.  He might be able to provide some guidance.

From Tods website see Link >>> 30U Info (https://www.ply33.com/Models/30-U/)

You can always do the striping once you are reasonably sure.  This will give your body paint time to cure.  My car was painted last year, and I am just doing the striping now on Aug 4th. They will paint it on its not vinal.

Good Luck

I did get the stripe color from Tods website but nothing definitive about location.  The ads in early magazines that I have found are mostly artist renderings which are notoriously inaccurate and so far I have not come across a photo that shows the striping.  The search goes on.

The pin striping was done yesterday.  95 degrees and sunny.  I couldn't get clear pictures, just to much reflections. The attached photos don't do the car justice.

Looks great!  I didn't get any help from the POC technical advisor on the striping for my 30-U coupe but seeing your car I think I am going to do mine the same way you did yours and leave it at that!  I really like the way it looks.

I can send better pictures but heading to my daughters for the weekend.  Closeups of some key areas.  The guy who painted on the stripe exceeded my expectations. The work really makes that finishing touch.

I'd love some more detailed pictures especially around the back belt but there's no rush.  I won't be back in Florida, where the car is, until the end of October.

Ok, it's on the to-do-list.

My thoughts about the stripes. The lines of the car haven't changed and they probably took great pains to make it look good. What looked good then looks good now so you are most likely very close. Besides that with all the research you have done and no one seems to know exactly how it was how can anyone say yours is wrong?

Byw your car is gorgeous!

Thanks for the compliment.  I am a firm believer in doing whatever makes you happy after all it's your hobby and your car.  :)

Chet you found an expert to pin stripe your car.  The finishing touch!   frank

p.s.  The picture identified as crazydave's car belongs to someone else.  Dave's '29 has the Kari-Keen trunk on the rear.

The pictures were in with the roof pictures he sent me when I was redoing my roof.  I probably pasted them with Dave's pictures.  Frank it's nice to see you are on the ball.

BTW... how are things going?

Thanks John, I think so too.  The guy did a great job painting it on by hand.  He was glad I didn't ask him to do the wheels.  He did another car with wood spoked wheels that he pin striped and after two wheels the monotony set in. Big time.

Of course, if asked he would have done it, but he would have charge accordingly. :)
