If I remember correctly I am pretty sure my car uses a square hole and pin.  Can't check right now because the car is in my daughter's garage.  Lots of parts lying around the house but none of them door handles.

Maybe Mr Old Plymouths will know for sure.

The ribbed rubber floor liner looks great and is pure rubber.  Should be perfect for the floor in the 29.  I might have to piece it in the center but I don't know yet until I measure the overall width.  This runner is thicker then the original 48 trunk liner (1/8") but will still look and work well.  I don't think it comes in any other color except black but here is the link.  You might want to search other suppliers Query ( Rubber Floor Runners )

I recently picked up an Original 1929 Model Year Salesmen's Confidential Data Book.  The Book is dated effective as of December 22, 1928.  It has a lot of great information but little on the interior except this picture.


It looks like mopardave has an original floor.

I recently found a commercial floor runner company that sells 1/8" ribbed rubber runner 2', 3', and 4 foot wide.., up to any length (150').  I ordered a 3 X 6 foot piece to do my running boards.  If the stuff looks good I will use it as the trunk liner for my 48 restoration and also for the floor in the 29.   Reasonably priced.

FORUM PURPOSE:

This forum was created for the 1928 Model Q, 1929 Model U, and 1930-U Plymouths.  Chrysler, Dodge, & DeSoto 1924 to 1930 are also welcome.  These early Plymouths and Chryslers are very similar in construction with many similarities in parts.  Actually after 75+ years.., any year noted could contain any combination or mixture of parts.   Since there are not a whole lot of these models around with even fewer experts on their repair and maintenance, I thought that having a place to share issues, problems, and practical information about these cars would be a big help.

Can anybody tell me what was the original thickness of the running boards on the 29 U.  I am in the process of redoing them and I want to get it perfect.  I think it goes to the style and lines of the car.

The gas tank in my 29 has been giving me trouble since I bought the car, so this weekend.., out it came.  It has a number of issues but it is still pretty solid after all these years.  A little body solder and a good interior gas tank paint should do the trick.  I would also like to find the tank gauge that was originally used.  I would be interested in one that was in any condition so that I could fabricate the parts to make it work again.  If anybody can help.., it would be appreciated, even another complete tank with all the appropriate parts if it is in a restorable condition.



I am looking for a Gauge, Float & Cap assembly Plymouth part number 42666 or 300539.  This is the listing the Plymouth Master Parts List gives for a Model U prior to RS-400-L.  My car is RY-888-W.

I don't think this setup was unique to only Plymouths.  Does anybody have any info on this part or does anybody sell reproductions.

You certainly bought a very interesting and rare old car.  I believe the Detroit plant ran 2 side by side production lines.  Below is my best guess.

Total Production of the 28Q was approximately 67,482 cars.
Your Serial Number = HDO14L   translated =  390,147

First production line run start = HL950P translated = 379,501  End = HD999D translated = 399,999
Second production line run start = RW000P translated = 400,001  End = RH997H translated =  439,973

First production line Detroit total cars built = 20,498  Your car being # 10,646.
Second production line Detroit cars built = 39,972
Windsor Canada built approximately = 7,012

My guess would be a strip of 1/8" rubber between the gas tank straps and the tank.  Probably between the top frame & tank and the bottom strap and the tank.  This is just my best guess.

I will check tonight.  I could tell you which is which by taking a picture of the top looking at the fill vent.   I will also check because the gas inlet might have a ball bearing check valve built in to keep gas from flowing back into the gas line.

I am pretty sure that for the model 39 Kingston Pump the female elbow (inside thread) is the vacuum side and the outside threaded elbow is the gas side.

Mr. Old Plymouths is correct.  Fix all leaks, the canister gasket, and ensure that the float is in good shape and you have a repaired Vacuum Gas Pump.  A little exterior paint will make it nice.
