We loaded up the 29 and set out for the DMV inspection station in Georgetown.



We off loaded the car and drove over to the inspection line.  I was frantic about the paint color change, should have brought the painting receipt.  I worried about pretty much everything you can think of until we pulled into the inspection bay.  First stop on the brake machine and passed.  Then all the inspectors had to come by to check her out.  Mostly concerned with three basic things.  Lights, windshield wiper, and vin number.   We passed with flying colors, no problems.



After we got home we started out on a test drive but had to turn around because of a scraping sound coming from the front passenger side wheel.  Quick check found a loose wheel bearing probably needs replacement over the winter but I tightened it up and we will try again tomorrow.

I guess we are back into maintenance mode.   Chet...

Great job Chet !!!   you'll have to explain what the brake machine is . I thought you just slam them on and if inspector hits window you pass . LOL.

Tom,

At the DMV inspection garage there are 4 sensors built into the floor.  You drive in and when the inspector signals you to stop you hit the brakes.  A computer analyzes the pressure applied by all wheels.  I am not sure what the range of accuracy is but if braking is uneven or out of spec you fail.

In Virginia inspections are done at your local gas station that has a certified state inspection agent.  He usually visually inspects the brakes.  Delaware is a small state and I believe there are only 4 locations where you can get an inspection done.  It is a drive through inspection process.  State inspections are every two years.  If you buy a new vehicle I believe the first inspection is after 5 years, emissions and safety.  Its all very humane.  Not like NYC.   :-\  Although I haven't had to deal with the NY DMV in more than 25 years, so maybe things are better these days.

Took the car out again this morning and I still have a knock in the front wheels.  I can't tell which wheel is making the noise.  Today it seemed to switch sides.  I guess I will have to dig a little deeper into this.  The good news is that the motor seems to pull much stronger than before the rebuild.  Maybe get this wheel knock resolved and try a little more acceleration. 

I would think the king pins would knock on a turn not while on a straight road.  The noise seems to increase & decrease with change in speed.  Maybe a wheel hub nut is hitting something in the brake area.  ??

Chet did you check the wood spokes to make sure they are tight and the hub bolts are tight and peened over?  A loose spoke will cause a clicking sound and if you have a loose spoke in each front wheel the sound appears to move from one side to the other.  Front wheels are more prone to loose spokes.

Thanks Russ, that's good advise.  I'm going to troubleshoot this eventually but right now I'm just a little burnt out. Need to find some enthusiasm.

Congratulations!  She looks awesome!
