Anyone have a picture of what the rear roof trim looks like or how it was handled on your 28,29,or 1930 sedan restoration ?


I am aware that the side trim was a rain channel.

Chet, I have a 29U coupe. If pics of that would help I can take some. Mine has no insert but the trim appears all original. It may have different dimensions but the "treatment" may be the same.

Anything would be helpful.  If I go to a pro I still need to understand what I need him to do ?  At this point I don't know exactly what needs to be done other then cover the roof.

You got it Chet. After I get some coffee in me I'll go out and snap some pics.

Here's how mine is Chet. The material is some type of nonmagnetic metal alloy. It's not soft like lead. It's held on by brass tacks through the sheet metal roof edge to the wood frame below. The roof edge is also screwed into the wood. On my coupe there are only three pieces total. The one big section is a single piece and then two short sections that terminate at the drip edge. It is is similar to the trim piece between the roof and quarter panel shown in the last two pics but these have tacks the seem to have been countersunk into the trim and filled with solder maybe. If you need any more info or pics just ask.

Thanks ski, The pictures are a great help.  Really would love to see a restored roof line up close.  I've seen 28s & 29s but didn't really look that deep at the roof line.  I guess its the old saying "you can't see the forest for the trees."

Chet, I'll be watching to see how you tackle this. It looks like some type of padding went over the wood slats and then the exterior roof fabric went over that and was pinched under the trim pieces and cut off even with the outer edge of the trim. I didn't have any of that left except some remnants of the outer fabric which is still under the trim.

Chet , you may get some aluminum half round trim . And mitred joint carve out a hole on bottom  and solder and fill with that alum-alloy type zinc based rods . I used on my running board trim and was impressed . It however is not shiny and is a lot stiffer then the molding .

Thanks,  I have someone close that does these roofs and has done a number of model A's. I'm trying to get a handle to what the 29 roof looked like originally. Especially the rear top molding and sidelines. It's a little different than the coupe.  I still need to do some work to the roof before covering it. Just trying to touch all bases.
