Title: 16 year Forum Anniversary
Post by: chetbrz on February 01, 2023, 10:27:25 AM
I created this forum 16 years ago in March of 2007.  Back in those days the costs were minimal and I was also gainfully employed.   For the last 8 of those 16 years I have been retired and costs have certainly increased while like most retirees my income has greatly declined.  I am not sure if I will renew this site after February 2024.  The increasing cost and needed security upgrades are getting a little pricy.  I don't believe there is enough traffic to offset current costs by adding ads, but I'll check into it.

Just a very early FYI... on what might be a future problem.

Would it be possible to asses users a bit to keep this going?  I have no idea what the costs are being computer challenged at best but it would be a shame to see it stop.  Perhaps if we all used it more frequently it would encourage sponsors to support it.  I too suffer from the retirement syndrome in that the only thing that doesn't go up is my pension but I would be amenable to a reasonable contribution if that is what it would take to keep it going.

Thanks Russ, your offer is very generous.  Traffic has quieted down and I think the search engines especially Microsoft Edge, are not listing us because the site doesn't have a security certificate.  Their browser shows it as "Not Secure"  Not hard to fix, all it takes is an additional cost for a security scan & certificate.  Then it can be browsed as https:  ( I think? Depends what the scan unfolds. It shouldn't be a problem we are running the newest and most current version of software.)

Anyway, we are good until 2024.  I'll check into what needs to be done to bring us up to speed.  I would rather self-fund the site than bring in ads.  A user go fund me drive might be very helpful in offsetting the expanding operational costs.  Something that I have avoided over the years.

BTW.., In 2007 I think the hosting costs were less than $100 bucks per year plus the DNS registration service which was around $14 per year.  Times have changed.

I'll keep you guys informed.  No worries!!

Just a thought... There is never going to be a lot of traffic on a forum just for the Model Q&U. There just aren't enough of them out there. If it would keep the forum alive could it be opened to more vehicles? Maybe pre 1940 or something. I just don't want this resource to go away.
