Neat idea. Looks great and does not deture from the original car look.

What did you do for the fronts? Use parking lights?

Happy days are coming. I got my rear motor mounts redone and got rid of most (not all) of the vibration. I found that the left side rear motor mount had let loose and allowed the inner plate of the motor mount to rest on the frame rail. When we took the mount apart we found that the carrage bolts inside the mount had the heads rubbing directly on each other and had worn themselves flat.

If anyone is in need of a revulcanized pair I had two pair done. This spare pair is available.

For $179.00, and your rebuildable pair I will send you a new redone set by return mail. They will fit in a small flat rate US mail box. Need your old ones so the next guy can have his to.

I had some other issues, but the car is running and goes on it's first tour of the year on May 14th. Missed our first club tour last weekend to the big Woodburn Tulip Festival. On the 14th we go to what is called "Papa's Toys" which is car collection in Cornelious, OR. This is a collection of 169 "Classics, Collector and Custom cars" that is open to the public once a year. There is no charge for addmission and all donations go to Doernbecher Children Hospital.

Should be a good day.

General Discussion / Rear engine mounts

Can anyone tell me the difference  between the rear motor (bell housing) mounts for the 28 - 30 four cylinder cars?

I see the parts book lists different numbers for the Q, U and 30U.

I just had mine revulcanized (30U) and had a spare set done. would like to know if they fit anything other than the 30U.

Here is what the POC Technical Advisor's Comments say about Wheels.

1. Only 1930 - 1933 (30U - PD) wood wheels may be natural varnished.
2. Painted wood wheels must have stripe.
3. Plymouth truck wheels could be with or without stripe.
4. Plymouth steel disc wheels generally were striped.
5. Check for proper tire size.
6. 15" tires started in 1948.

From this we can determine that 1928 and 1929 wood wheels were painted.

Also if you look in  the POC site under "reference" then pick Group I cars, and on pages 18 thru 21 is a lot of information about paint, including color for wood Wire wheels and stripes.

Thanks again for all the input. Every different idea or suggestion helps to narrow down the problem.

Will be about 3 weeks to get my motor mounts back, Then we will try again.

Hi Guys, If your not in a big hurry I will get some closeups of this 28 sedan (an all original car), and see if we can tell where the pin stiping goes.

I am tied up being at the Portland Swap Meet until Sunday.

Let me know.

Rich, I assume that the one listed is really for a 28 or 29, no point and only two connectors.

Yea, I figured out how to get the mounts out, Thanks Tony. Just jacked up the back of the engine. Got the rubber mounts out and sure enough they were bad. They had slipped and let the engine come downto touch the frame rails.

I called a few of the classic car parts places and actually found 1 (one) NOS, but they wanted $180.00 - NO WAY. A couple others had old prices for redoing the vulcanizing at about $320 to $350 per pair and indicated that price was probably not good any more.

I called around and found a company here in the Portland area that still does the old fashioned hot vulcanizing. That is their only business, the hot process not the new RTV (room temperture vulcanizing). He has mine, and a spare I had on the shelf. I will check how good they really are when I get them back, but I may be starting to market them for about $180 to $200. per set.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Gary

P.S. Yes the engine vibration was when the can was setting still not moving.

There is an ignition switch and coil assembly on eBay right now. It is listed as a 1930, and it has a long compatability list showing a 31 and 32 PA.

The thing I noticed is it doesn't have the pointed top bezel like fits my 30U and it only has two connectors in the back for battery and distributor.

If anyone can shed some light on what this really fits it would be helpful.

Do the 31 and 32 only have two connectors?

What years had the square bezel without the pointed top? What about 28 and 29, did they have pointed top?

Always looking for more info.

Got delayed with other things, but got it running today and ALASS balance job on flywheel and pressure plate didn't help.

I got down and looked real close and it appeared that one of the rear motor mounts may have gave way and let the mount sag down to touch the fram rail. I loosened it up and jacked the engine up so the mount wasn't touching the frame and still a vibration. This is still enough to rattle the gauges in the dash.

I am at my wits end. I guess it is back to where I was a few weeks ago and pull the engine for a complete balance job.

Somebody PLEASE advise. It looks like pulling the engine is no easy job. Do you need to take the bell housing off before pulling the engine?

Can you change the rear motor mounts without pulling the engine?

Where can I find replacement or revulcanized rear motor mounts?

But, the plus side is, the engine seems to run great after the engine cleaning and the rebuilt distributor.

Chet is correct. The early models used the 2 wire coil, and the 30 (with the gas gauge) started the use of the 3 wire. The coil is even marked on the middle post as Gas Gauge. Why the 3 wire you ask, because there was no other place in the system they had a circuit that was controled by the key. This was, as Chet memtioned, the new assessory circuit. Didn't take them to long to figure out a better way.

General Discussion / Windshield crank
March 23, 2011, 12:10:28 PM

Right now on eBay is a crank mechanism advertised for the 28-29 and 30 Plymouth. It is a little different from my 30 (it has inclosed gear box) but should work well for any of them.

Listing ends Mar 28th at 13:12:14.

Good luck in your quest.
