General Discussion / Re: Speedo Cable
February 13, 2014, 12:09:48 PM
Gary S,

1.  There could be gaskets on both ends of the cable.  I haven't had mine off in ages and don't remember.
2.  I doubt it.  The gearbox fluid should be at the bottom of the filler plug hole.
3.   My understanding is that the cable is lubricated by gearbox fluid so that is what I use.

The spiral nature of the cable would move the fluid as it rotates.  Gravity would drain excess when at rest.  Remove any slack in the cable in the interior so the fluid would not pool in a low point.

Good luck,

frank

Hi Ted,

I believe John did say it should be flexible.  I would not recommend copper though it does look good.  I used copper until it left me high and dry 90 miles from home.  It broke at the flange from, I think, all the vibration.  I've read this is a characteristic of copper.  The steel (brake tubing) has lasted many years and miles.  The 1st pic is my set-up.  The 2nd is Ray Ovick's 29U 2dr Sedan at the August 2002 POC National in Grand Rapids, MN.

Ted,

The vac tank that came on my car had a sediment bowl like Chet's picture.  The non-leaking replacement tank does not have a bowl, just a shut-off valve.  I put an "s" curved steel tube from it to the carb.  I don't know which is correct or maybe both are, depending on when built.

On top, the gas tank line fits the female brass fitting and the male is attached to a line from the rear of the oil pump.  Note the small diameter of this line.  Some may show this line from the intake manifold to the vac tank, which is not correct.  Manifold line is connected to the valve on the dash to operate the windshield wiper.

' wish i knew where this picture came from, but don't.

You're correct, 28 & 29 were painted and unpainted became an additional cost option in 1930, so I've been told.

They will look good in a natural finish.  I used several coats of spar varnish which gives a bit of a mellow, yellow glow (my apologies to Donovan).  After many years, I've decided to paint mine to take it to original build.

The hub is blue even though it looks black.  frank

General Discussion / Re: Silver Dome Head Paint

Ted,

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit my brush is a Mary Kay cosmetic brush I "borrowed" from my wife.  It is about 3/4" wide, very fine, soft bristles.  The head was sprayed when the engine was overhauled in the late '80s.  Just use the brush for touch-up.

Hi Ted,

I used KRYLON HIGH HEAT SPRAY PAINT, Aluminum 1402.  The Walmart price tag says #3.24, so you can imagine how long ago I bought it.  Has held well and use it for touching up spots.  Clean area with brass brush, wipe with paint thinner, spray small amount into clean butter tub and brush it on.  Blends nicely, at least to my eyes.

Bearings 46,

If it says Silver Dome on the head, then that is its "color."  The high compression head was red.

Out of curiosity, what is your carburetor?

General Discussion / Re: Carby air filter

Hi Ian,

I understand the Carter DRT-08 is used on some 30-U and the PA and they have different accelerator pumps.  They also have different Model numbers.  The RT-08 is for a 29U and some 30-U.  The air cleaners for RT and DRT are not interchangeable, at least for examples I have.  RT diameter is 1 & 5/8" while DRT is 1 & 7/8".  The picture in the Master Parts List for the Q looks like the U, but don't know if Q is RT-08.  In the picture, the RT is on the left.  The DRT-08 is a Model 209S, according to its brass tag.  I don't know of a modern equivalent, although I have seen pictures of a K&N type filter mated to these carbs.

I've had American Collectors Insurance, Inc. for years.  Pretty basic policy for about $120/year.  Could probably save some money by changing dedcutibles from $0.  No claims - they're happy and so am I.  They previously had mileage limit, but believe they nixed it in 2012, at least for my policy.  Will renew in March.  Thanks to this discussion, I will look at alternatives.
