General Discussion / Re: windshield side channel
June 21, 2013, 08:13:08 PM
I have ordered the three seal kit from Steele for my 30U windshield.  Should there be a seal for the top of the windshield?  Up till now my windshield has been solidly mounted so I have nothing to go by, and there was nothing sealing the top.  Thanks, jim

Thanks for the idea.  There is a Chevy club here.

General Discussion / windshield side channel
May 21, 2013, 02:00:19 PM
My 30U needs the windshield side sash channels installed.  Can anyone tell me their orientation?  I have one that looks like it was attached 1/4 from the top or bottom of the glass but I don't know which.  And I don't know which side of the channel is in and which is out.  One of my channels still has glass pieces in it and the other is clean with no clues about where it goes.  The windshield is now mounted solidly in place but I'd like to get it moving up and down.

Regards and thanks for all your help.  jim

General Discussion / Oil Pressure
April 22, 2013, 07:23:29 PM
Thanks forum for the archives info on oil pump priming.  My rebuilt 30U engine had no oil pressure.  (An ugly feeling)  The archives had an article that is spot on.  I primed the 30U using an opening just above the oil pressure regulator on the left side of the block.  Just removed a pipe plug, filled the oil channel with 1/2 quart of oil, gave it a squirt of air, replaced the plug and wa-la, oil pressure when turning the engine with the starter and without spark plugs.

I told this to a VW guy who was not the least surprised.  He went thru the same thing with his VW.  Only his solution was to fill the oil pump with grease.  That alternative (vasalene) is also in forum archives.

   Many, many thanks.  jim

General Discussion / Re: 30U oil consumption

autopsy report on oil consumption.  Broken top compression ring in #1 cylinder.  Also bad rod bearing and cylinder is out of round. Time for an overhaul.  Good news, plenty of cylinder left to bore.

Be real sure its a radiator problem.  My 30U was over heating because of retarded timing.  jim

Thanks Gary, I'll give them a call.  Also who is the wheel wright in your area?  I have his address from the National meet but asking you now is much easier than finding it.  Regards, jim

Thanks for the comments.  I did forget to mention the smoke.  There is enough smoke to stop tail gaters.  I'll start looking for gaskets.  The rings will wait till the head is off.
Thanks again.  jim

General Discussion / 30U oil consumption
March 26, 2012, 04:55:39 PM
This year i hope to lower the oil consumption of my 30U.  It is using about a quart every 40 miles and seems to have a lot of "blow by".  The blow by is enough to require stopping the engine to add oil.  With the engine running the blow-by will not allow oil to go down the filler tube.  The compression is right at 65 pounds and the plugs don't seem to be fouled.  (although I haven't started it for a couple of months and my memory may not be correct).  Could this be a valve guide problem?  The engine sat idle for years before coming to me.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Regards, jim

General Discussion / Re: brake light
September 16, 2010, 03:05:57 AM
I'm pretty sure that Chevy brake light switches work in our cars.  I picked up an after market taillight bracket for my 30U so now have two rear lights.  Ebay has what looks like a 29 bracket for sale now. I installed two sealed beam fog lights for the front turn signals.  Problem is the flasher is not good enough for all the current when using the emergency flashing feature.  I may move the front signals to the parking lamps.  Also found out from our local rearend shop that the 140 lb tork  spec for the spindle nut is a one-time factory requirement.  Once done at the factory the next time the nut only needs to be tight.

Thanks to everyone for all the help!!   jim

General Discussion / Re: pulling a engine

Hi Rusty
I think it is easier to remove the transmission and leave the fenders.  I was surprised that my new front motor mount raised the engine so far the exhaust became a minor problem.    jim

Chet it seems to me the 29 radiator has more capacity than the 30?  jim

Chet the 30U radiator has two block connections.  One on the upper tank driver side and one on the lower tank passenger side.  I assume the top is hot and the bottom is cooled?  jim

General Discussion / Re: mounting rear wheels
October 25, 2009, 01:08:46 AM
Hi Rusty.  Its been a while but I turned the axle so the keyway is on top.  Put in the key and slid on the wheel.  Keep the car in gear so you can wiggle the wheel.  Some I've done have had imperfections which I removed with very minimal filing.  Also clean the axle and the wheel and use no grease.  You may want to remove the wheel againn.  Jim

They do come in different sizes.  Check the diameter of your wheels.  Jim  (I think the model T's are too long)
