Does anyone know if anybody reproduces this Tag ?

If not I will try to have one reproduced.  Also anyone know what the top line reads above PLYMOUTH MOTOR CORP.?



Might be able to clean it up better if I can remove the extra paint without further damage.

Has anyone had any luck fixing a chip in the enamel of the Plymouth Radiator Emblem.  See below the chip in the sail.

 

Does anyone know if the Bell Housing on a 29U engine can be removed without loosening or removing the flywheel.

I placed an order with YnZ's Yesterdays Parts for a new wire harness for my 29.  I added a couple of wiring extras that they had no trouble understanding and working through with me so that we were both speaking the same language.

Dave was correct in his assessment that actually talking with a live person and working out the details is a major benefit.

My plan is to work on prepping the car for the eventual installation of the harness then I will be able to fit the floor back in.  Currently its very easy with the floor out and the frame exposed to run wires and do some painting and cleanup tasks.

All Suspension Work Completed

The original Build Thread was getting quite long so I decided to start another since this Thread completes most of the structural work and all the suspension restoration.  I must admit that new springs all around and repairing the problems with the mismatch shackles makes a big difference.  So after a year since I started the restoration the car is finally sitting on it's own four wheels again and in perfect alignment.





So on to the next chapter.  I'll be working on replacing the floor next ?

I read an article awhile back which was commemorating the 100 anniversary of the Model 'T'.  The author brought out a point that none of us truly have experienced first hand.  Sure many of us have lived through the "See the USA in your Chevrolet" and paid 17 to 23 cents a gallon but none of us truly understand the real impact of the automobile on daily life in the early 1900's.   The author proposed that the automobile gave people something that they didn't have prior and that was leisure time.   How you might ask with all the early maintenance that need to be done to keep these cars road worthy.   Well when you think about it prior to the automobile you had a horse and possibility a wagon.   If you only used it to go to town once a week you still had to feed and care for your horse daily.  The car on the other hand only needed gas when you used it so thus a whole new era of leisure time was created.

The author proposes "Sadly, as with everything, when something slips from current events into history much of its significance becomes lost.  Since we don't have a direct recollection of the times, we cannot (even with vivid imaginations) appreciate what a difference it made in people's lives."

The author was Jay Klehfoth  CEO of the Model 'T' Ford Club of America in 2008.

The article struck a cord with me in that I recall from my summer drives how people would react to my car and probably most would appreciate the age but all would walk away thinking how primitive those early cars were.  The reality is quite the opposite.  Our old cars are marvels of human ingenuity which have survived 80 years of wars, politics, hard economic times, the elements of nature, and the rising price of gasoline.   

So don't hate garaging the old girl for the winter, appreciate the fact that you don't have to go out to the barn every day to feed and clean up after her.  Well maybe a few drops of oil on the floor but in the great scheme of things not bad at all.  I wonder what people will think of my laptop 100 years from now ?

I am working on cleaning up the rear suspension on my 29 and my rear leaf spring shackles are marked WME Pat. 1921 - 25  They look and work exactly like the Tryon Shackles.  I could not find any reference to a Manufacturing Co. WME in my 1924 Chilton Automobile Directory.  Another Mystery ??



Also the leaf spring shackle plates are marked Right (Passenger) and Left (Driver's Side).  I have yet to determine if there is any difference.

Does the rearview mirror pictured below look original for a 29 Plymouth ?

Whenever I finish this car it will have to go through a one time inspection and before I can get a Delaware registration the car will have to have a working windshield wiper.  I have collect possible solutions over the years but I am not sure if any of them will work OK.  I have two Trico motors used on phantom cars which had exterior mounts.   Neither work so before I waste time and money I was wondering if anyone has a solution to the wiper assembly issue.  I was told the one I had on the car couldn't be fixed ?? I am not even sure if it is correct for the car ??

Any advise would be appreciated.

Does anyone have pictures of the rear and front sections of the 29Plymouth roof looking from inside the car with or without the headliner.  I have some but nothing that shows the area over the rear window or front windshield in any kind of detail.

I am trying to make a few decisions on the reconstruction of the 29 4-door sedan roof.  From the rear section's metal skin there is a definite left to right curvature to the roof.   In most pictures the roof looks pretty flat but looking at the front metal form of the cowl, it does have a slight arc to it.  Can anyone confirm whether the front section of the roof is at a slight arc or does it lay completely flat in reference to the windshield sun visor. 

As you probably know already there was no original roof wood left on my car.  I have plenty of pictures of original roof construction but I am still flying blind.  Any help would be appreciated.

Dashboard Warning for 28-30 Plymouths.

On my 29 the 6 Dashboard slotted screws that hold the dash in place are an obsolete screw size.  They are round head screws with a thread size of 1/4-24TPI.  Modern machine screw sizes are 1/4-20 and 1/4-28.  The 1/4-24 isn't used anymore especially in a round head with a diameter of 0.567 (approx. 9/16)  and a head height of 0.150 (approx. 5/32)  If you work in this area try not to damage these screws because they are not readily available.  I believe the tap and die may still be available if you have your own metal lathe.

After removing the wood which the previous owner installed I am puzzled about how the front door hinges attach to the car.  Below is a picture of the passenger side area before removing the wood.  Besides the metal brackets there is a steel face piece that I believe goes on over the hinges but maybe this is incorrect.


Here is a picture of the passenger side hinge slots with the wood removed.  It appears that the frame was cut with a hack saw and the previous owner flattened the flange in the hinge area. Maybe because the doors wouldn't align properly.

Can someone please advise or provide pictures of an unmolested hinge mount.

I was able to get two screws into the broken side of my steering wheel after clamping and gluing the rim into place.  The pictures look really bad but even broken the wheel was actually pretty strong but after getting the two stainless steel screws in place, the wheel is now extremely strong.

I would like to keep this original steering wheel and thought I would find some product that would work well to fill all the wood cracks and then sand the wheel smooth and concentric.  Once this was done I was thinking of fiberglass the rim.

All comments and ideas appreciated.

Hi all, I have been down in Florida visiting with the grand kids and just got back yesterday.  On the drive back I had the pleasure of stopping by Ted's home (racertb), in northern Florida.  My wife and I got a chance to look at Ted's beautiful 29 and his 1950 Plymouth Special Deluxe.  Both cars are in great original condition.  Below is a picture the wife snapped.

Since the roof of my car is off and probably wasn't correct anyway, I would like to install a strip of wood across the top to hold the door frames in their proper position before I tighten down the door pillars.   What I need is:

The distance between the rear doors.  See picture below:
